Classification Algorithms for Early Tooth Demineralization Assessment by Impedance Spectroscopy.

Oral caries is one of the most common oral diseases worldwide, affecting about 2.4 billion people. This phenomenon always starts with enamel demineralization, eventually progressing to tooth cavitation and loss when not properly treated. Nowadays, the standard diagnostic techniques to detect demineralization strongly depend on the operator's expertise and are characterized by fairly low sensitivity and specificity, and/or involve ionizing radiation. This study investigates the feasibility of a non-invasive, effective, rapid, and radiation-free approach employing impedance spectroscopy for earl

Tooth Enamel Demineralization: Caries and Erosion from the Viewpoint of Chemistry.

The demineralization of tooth enamel is the primary consequence of dental caries, leading to cavities and finally tooth loss. Erosive tooth wear from acidic beverages and food is another factor that degrades enamel. In both cases, an acidic environment leads to etching and the final dissolution of tooth mineral, i.e., hydroxyapatite. Here, this process is discussed from a chemical perspective, taking into account the solubility of calcium phosphate and the presence of the pellicle (protein layer) and plaque (bacterial biofilms), which both affect the dissolution rate. While low pH is definitel

Prevention of enamel demineralization after tooth bleaching by bioactive glass incorporated into toothpaste.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of bleaching on the structure of the enamel layer of teeth and the potential of the commercial bioactive glass NovaMin® in two different toothpastes to remineralize such regions of the enamel. Three aspects were considered: the extent and nature of the alterations in the enamel after application of the bleaching agents; the extent of remineralization after application of two commercial toothpastes containing bioactive glass; and whether or not there were differences between the toothpastes in terms of their effectiveness in promoti

Effect of anaerobic or/and microaerophilic atmosphere on microcosm biofilm formation and tooth demineralization.

OBJECTIVE: Microcosm biofilms can reproduce the complexity of a dental biofilm. However, different forms of cultivation have been used. The impact of the culture atmosphere on the development of microcosm biofilms and their potential to cause tooth demineralization has not yet been deeply studied. This study analyzes the effects of three experimental cultivation models (microaerophile vs. anaerobiosis vs. experimental mixed) on the colony-forming units (CFU) of the cariogenic microorganisms and tooth demineralization. METHODOLOGY: 90 bovine enamel and 90 dentin specimens were distributed into

New Preventive Approaches Part I: Functional Peptides and Other Therapies to Prevent Tooth Demineralization.

The limited effect of fluoride on root caries has prompted the study of new preventive therapies, which involve recently developed functional peptides, lasers, phosphate-based technologies, among several other approaches. Most of the specific peptides currently investigated have been developed based on the available information related to the protective action of salivary proteins, including statherin-derived peptides. Other peptides include 8DSS, self-assembling peptide P11-4, antimicrobial peptides, and casein phosphopeptides combined with amorphous calcium phosphate. These were shown to inc

Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomographic imaging of artificial demineralization on exposed surfaces of tooth roots.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the potential of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) to non-destructively measure the depth and severity of artificial demineralization on exposed root surfaces and measure the degree of inhibition by topical fluoride. Although PS-OCT imaging studies have demonstrated the utility of PS-OCT for imaging carious lesions on enamel and dentin surfaces the influence of the cementum layer that is present on intact root surfaces has not been investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, extracted human t

A comparative histologic study of the pulp-dentinal interface in undemineralized and demineralized tooth sections.

This study examines cellular differences between undemineralized and demineralized tooth sections. The material comprised unerupted and partly erupted third molars. After fixation for 24 h, 10- to 15-microns ground sections were prepared from half of the tooth, using a cutting-grinding system. The sections were compared with demineralized routine sections from the other half of the tooth. Undemineralized sections showed a better capacity for preserving the tissue integration. Especially between the odontoblast layer and the predentin a low frequency of disjunctions or tears were noted. At this

In vitro demineralization/remineralization cycles at human tooth enamel surfaces investigated by AFM and nanoindentation.

The early stages of enamel surface dissolution (erosion) are of high scientific relevance; however, little is known about if and to what extent these early stages, which result in the softening of the enamel surface, are reversible. The present study investigated the possible rehardening of surface softened enamel in two separate experiments in vitro, employing physiologically relevant demineralization and remineralization times and remineralizing solutions possessing chemical properties close to those of human saliva. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) based nanoindentation has been used to study

Elemental changes in tooth hard tissues during demineralization and fluoride-induced remineralization: an SEM-EDX study.

BACKGROUND: Tooth enamel and dentin are the most highly mineralized tissues in the human body, and their structural stability depends on the balanced content of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and fluoride (F). Demineralization leads to the loss of these ions, weakening the tooth structure and increasing susceptibility to caries. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate elemental changes in Ca, P, and F in intact, demineralized, and remineralized teeth across the enamel, dentin-enamel junction and peripulpal dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 45 extracted human teeth were longitudinally sectioned t

The effect of biphasic calcium phosphate and demineralized bone matrix on tooth eruption in mongrel dogs.

BACKGROUND: Bone grafts can provide an optimal environment for permanent tooth to erupt and enhance the stability of the alveolar maxilla. Although autologous bone is an optimal source for osteogenesis, its inevitable donor site morbidity has led to active research on bone substitutes. This study was designed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of using biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP; Osteon) as a bone substitute in dogs. METHODS: Bilateral third and fourth premolars of four 15-week-old mongrel dogs were used. All teeth were extracted except the third premolar of the right mandible, which

Biological Evaluation of the Osteoinductive Potential of Dry Teeth after Chemical Demineralization Treatment Using the Tooth Transformer Device.

Several studies have already demonstrated the biocompatibility of a tooth as a grafting material in the regeneration of bone tissue, showing its osteoconductive potential, while no studies have verified whether the osteoinductive potential of a tooth remains constant or is altered after its treatment with the Tooth Transformer (TT) device. The aim of the study was to demonstrate that the treatment with the TT device did not alter the osteoinductivity of an extracted tooth that was stored dry. Twelve extracted human teeth were collected from real patients. Caries, tartar and filling materials w

Retrospective Study of Maxillary Sinus Augmentation Using Demineralized Tooth Block Bone for Dental Implant.

(1) Background: When placing implants in the maxillary posterior region with insufficient alveolar bone, a maxillary sinus elevation is necessary. Autogenous bone, though biologically ideal, poses risks and discomfort due to donor site harvesting. Block-type autogenous tooth bone graft material, made from the patient's own extracted tooth, offers similar biological stability without these drawbacks. (2) Methods: This study observed the progress of 19 implant patients who were treated with maxillary sinus elevation procedures using block-type autogenous tooth bone graft material at the Daegu Ca

High contrast near-infrared polarized reflectance images of demineralization on tooth buccal and occlusal surfaces at lambda = 1310-nm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sound enamel manifests peak transparency in the near-IR (NIR) at 1310-nm, therefore the near-IR is ideally suited for high contrast imaging of dental caries. The purpose of this study was to acquire images of early demineralized enamel on the buccal and occlusal surfaces of extracted human teeth using NIR reflectance imaging and compare the contrast of those images with the contrast of images taken using other methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen human molars were used in this in vitro study. Teeth were painted with a clear acid-resistant varnish, leaving two 2 m

Comparative Evaluation of the Remineralizing Potential of Fluoridated and Non-fluoridated Agents on Demineralized Primary Tooth Enamel: An In Vitro Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries remains a highly prevalent condition in children, with primary teeth being particularly susceptible due to their lower mineral content and structural characteristics. Early intervention using remineralizing agents can reverse enamel demineralization and prevent disease progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the remineralizing efficacy of various fluoridated and non-fluoridated agents on the surface microhardness (SMH) of demineralized primary tooth enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This in vitro experimental study was conducted on 50 extracted,
