Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, the most common inherited neuromuscular disorder, exhibits a wide phenotypic range, genetic heterogeneity, and a variable disease course. The diverse molecular genetic mechanisms of CMT were discovered over the past three decades with the development of molecular biology and gene sequencing technologies. These methods have brought new options for CMT reclassification and led to an exciting era of treatment target discovery for this incurable disease. Currently, there are no approved disease management methods that can fully cure patients with CMT, and rehabil

Many studies suggest associations between oral health and cardiovascular diseases, but there is a lack of causal evidence. Exploiting exogenous variation in tooth loss in US adults due to differential childhood exposure to fluoridated water, this study investigated the causal effect of tooth loss on cardiovascular diseases. A total of 722,519 participants in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) waves 2006, 2008, or 2010 (birth years 1940-1978) were included in the analytical sample. To identify the effect of tooth loss on having a history of coronary heart disease (CHD) or st

Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL, previously known as "neck lesions") on cat teeth are compared to caries and differentiated with the use of new methods. Radiological examination reveals typical odontoclastic resorptive processes, which take place at the dental root and at the periodontium. These lesions demonstrate the destruction on the desmodontium and the following ankylosing reaction. The rhodamine B stain which is selective for caries, stains regions which are softened by caries in a dark red way. Fuchsin/Acetic-Light Green stained histological preparations demonstrate the r

In this review, we describe the current knowledge and the advances in research on human genes whose defect leads to dental anomalies. Recently, it was demonstrated that a missense mutation of a human homeobox MSX1 gene causes autosomal dominant agenesis of second premolars and third molars. X-linked anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (EDA), characterized by abnormal hair, teeth, and sweat glands, was demonstrated to be caused by a mutation in a novel transmembrane protein gene that is expressed in epithelial cells and in other adult and fetal tissues. The autosomal dominant Rieger syndrome (RS) m

Tooth eruption is an essential process for the development of the oral and maxillofacial system. Several inherited and acquired diseases might affect this tightly regulated process, resulting in premature, delayed, or even failed tooth eruption. The purpose of this article is to review the literature and the clinical parameters of metabolic bone diseases that affect tooth eruption. It examines the physiological aspects of tooth eruption and the pathophysiological changes induced by metabolic bone diseases, including changes in bone metabolism, density, and structure. The search strategy for th

The analyses of the pattern of dental disease in the Late Medieval Serbian population from cemetery excavations in the archaeological site Grachanica were based on the study of tooth wear, ante-mortem tooth loss, caries, hypoplasia, alveolar resorption, abscesses and calculus. The total sample of all available skeletons with almost complete permanent dentition numbers 45 individuals. Dental sample comprises 178 maxillary teeth and 337 mandibular teeth. The presence of dental caries was scored taking into consideration the size of the lesion (four degrees) and its position on the tooth. The deg

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, also known as peroneal muscular atrophy or hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy, is among the most frequent hereditary disorders of the nervous system. The relatively homogeneous clinical phenotype involves mainly progressive weakness and wasting of distal muscles; it starts and predominates in the peroneal muscles. Electrophysiological and pathology data distinguish two principal forms of CMT: demyelinating and axonal. More than 20 distinct genetic subtypes have been identified to date and other new loci and genes remain to be discovered, thus demonstrati

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) or hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy constitutes a genetically heterogeneous group of diseases that affect the peripheral nervous system. CMT is characterized by degeneration or abnormal development of the peripheral nerve and is transmitted with different genetic patterns. In most cases, the disease starts in infancy. Its symptoms, among others, are an awkward gait; muscular atrophy of the 4 extremities, particularly distally; and foot deformities, such as cavus foot. People with CMT have an altered gait; most have a high stepping gait and frequently tr

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the similarities and differences in the clinical presentation of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, an inherited peripheral neuropathy, and acquired lumbar spinal stenosis.
CLINICAL FEATURES: Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis causing nerve root entrapment often have leg pain and weakness during such activities as walking or standing. Additional symptoms of poor balance, foot deformity and signs of cerebellar and sensory ataxia suggest a diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy rather than nerve root entrapment.
INTERVENTION: Electrodiagnostic testing and nerve conduction studies

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a group of genetic peripheral neuropathies that is associated with a broad variety of clinical genetic features. Most CMT syndromes are characterized by a progressive muscle weakness and atrophy with a distally pronounced sensory dysfunction. Bone deformities as pes cavus or hammertoes are frequent. The severity of disability varies considerably between different subclasses. Physical examination, electrophysiological testing and family history are current methods to investigate a patient affected by CMT. We used these methods for clinical assessment of two

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), also called hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN), is the most common inherited peripheral neuropathy, comprised by a group of genetically heterogeneous disorders that share clinical characteristics of progressive distal muscle weakness and atrophy, foot deformities, distal sensory loss, and depressed tendon reflexes. It can be categorized according to its electrophysiological or pathological features, transmission patterns, age of disease onset, and molecular pathology. CMT type 1 (CMT1; MIM 118200) is a group of autosomal dominant-inherited demyeli

OBJECTIVE: Bacteria involved in purulent tooth disease and the most effective antibiotics were investigated.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Swab samples were taken from 126 rabbits with facial abscesses or purulent periapical inflammation during surgical treatment. Bacteriological examination and susceptibility testing were performed.
RESULTS: A wide range of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were detected. The most commonly isolated anaerobes were gram-negative rods (Prevotella sp., Fusobacterium sp., Bacteroides sp.) and gram-positive non-sporulating cocci (mostly Peptostreptococcus sp.). Of the aerob

Oral health has long been considered to be on the bangs of systemic health. And yet, as recently as 2024, the World Health Organization stated once again that oral diseases rank first in the world in terms of prevalence. This review aims to highlight data from the literature demonstrating the relationships between oral and systemic diseases. The tissues of the oral cavity, teeth, their bony bases and supporting tissues can each suffer from pathologies, often infectious, whose consequences can be found at local, regional and systemic levels. These disorders affect children and adults of all age

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the common terminology used to describe the hereditary neuropathies. This update reviews advances in the past year in our understanding of these diseases, including some important earlier references.
RECENT FINDINGS: In the past year, advances in next-generation sequencing continued to increase the number of genes associated with CMT. The connection between genotype and phenotype has become more complicated. New insights into the pathogenesis of the diseases are reviewed. Treatment and clinical trial updates coming from these new insight

Erosive tissue loss is part of the physiological wear of teeth. Clinical features are an initial loss of tooth shine or luster followed by flattening of convex structures; with continuing acid exposure, concavities form on smooth surfaces, or grooving and cupping occur on incisal/occlusal surfaces. Dental erosion must be distinguished from other forms of wear, but can also contribute to general tissue loss by surface softening, thus modifying physical wear processes. The determination of dental erosion as a condition or pathology is relatively easy in the case of pain or endodontic complicatio
