Predicting Amputation and Multiple Debridements in Tooth Knuckle Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Tooth knuckle injuries can be expensive to treat and may necessitate amputation in some cases. Several limitations exist in the literature regarding our knowledge around the factors predicting amputation and the need for multiple debridements in treating this injury. METHODS: A historic cohort study of 321 patients treated for tooth knuckle injuries was undertaken. Twenty-one demographic, clinical and laboratory variables were collected. Two outcome measurements were collected - the need for amputation and the need for more than one surgical debridement. A multivariate logistic re

Improved Wisdom Tooth Diagnosis Can Reduce Dental Disease and Nonbattle Injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Wisdom teeth are a frequent cause for dental disease and nonbattle injuries (D-DNBIs) during expeditionary deployments. Improved diagnosis and timely treatment before deployment can reduce the need to evacuate a D-DNBI while in a theater. This study proposed key identifiers to diagnose wisdom teeth as Dental Readiness Classification (DRC) 3. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a retrospective chart review conducted to measure concurrence among Army dentists when assigning DRC for wisdom teeth. This study also recorded demographic data and physical findings among the observed p

[Obligation to document front tooth injuries in adolescents for forensic purposes].

Following trauma to the anterior teeth during adolescence, exact clinical and roentgenologic records of the findings as well as documentation of the direct and indirect consequences of the trauma are required for forensic, evaluatory, and insurance reasons. Regular control examinations over a period of several years are necessary, since secondary damage may only be demonstrable after a periof of one year or even longer. The use of a uniform medical examination form was recommended to improve and compare documentation of the consequences of injuries to the anterior teeth.

[Tooth and jaw injuries following violence--diagnosis and treatment in emergency department].

Research over the last decade has confirmed that facial injuries caused by violence occur most frequently among young males, often under the influence of alcohol, and less frequently in women and children following domestic violence. Evidence of injuries may be used in court or in claims for compensation, and must be carefully documented. Facial asymmetry, deviation of the mandible in opening, altered occlusion and/or abrasions under the chin may be indications of jaw fractures; such patients are referred to oral surgery units for further treatment. Lacerations and ulceration in the oral mucou

Effects of different tooth grinding procedures on the occurrence of tooth injuries, skin lesions, performance and behaviour of suckling piglets.

BACKGROUND: Immediately after birth, newborn piglets fight to establish a teat order. During this process, lesions appear on the piglets' faces and on the sows' teats, which is why tooth resection is carried out on many farms in Germany even though it is known that this procedure is frequently resulting in pulp openings. The opening of a pulp cave is suspected to cause painful tooth alterations and may be an entrance for infectious agents. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of tooth resection on skin lesions, development of bodyweight and behaviour in suckling piglets. Four da

Prevalence and Patterns of Multiple Injuries Affecting a Single Permanent Tooth (Combination Injuries): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Combination injuries or multiple traumatic dental injuries (TDI) affecting a single permanent tooth are clinically significant but remain underrecognized. Although the global prevalence of TDI is well documented, the epidemiology of combination injuries has not been clearly established. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the prevalence and patterns of combination injuries in traumatized permanent teeth. METHODS: A review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD1245967). Comprehensive searches of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus were conducted withou

Long-Term Sequelae of Primary Tooth Injuries on Permanent Successors: A Case Series.

Trauma to the primary dentition is a common occurrence in early childhood and poses a significant risk to the developing permanent successors due to their close anatomical relationship. The sequelae may have delayed presentation, where symptoms may arise even years after the trauma in the form of developmental disturbances to the permanent teeth. This case series presents five children who presented with developmental sequelae to their permanent successors after traumatic injury to their predecessor primary teeth. The presentations in the cases included enamel hypoplasia, crown dilaceration, d

Iatrogenic traumatic brain injury during tooth extraction.

An 8 yr old spayed female Yorkshire terrier was referred for evaluation of progressive neurological signs after a routine dental prophylaxis with tooth extractions. The patient was circling to the left and blind in the right eye with right hemiparesis. Neurolocalization was to the left forebrain. MRI revealed a linear tract extending from the caudal oropharynx, through the left retrobulbar space and frontal lobe, into the left parietal lobe. A small skull fracture was identified in the frontal bone through which the linear tract passed. Those findings were consistent with iatrogenic trauma fro

Tooth transplantation after dental injury sequelae in children.

Ten immature autotransplanted lower premolars from six patients from 7 to 12 years of age were studied and assessed clinically and radiographically at Regional Clinical Hospital in Temuco between January 2004 and April 2006. All transplantations were performed both because of a missing anterior tooth by dental trauma or by healing complications after injuries. The mean age at the time of the surgery was 10 years (range 7-12 years) and the postoperative follow-up period varied from 5 to 27 months with a mean of 16.9 months. All teeth were stabilized with flexible composite resin wire splints. W

Evoked and spontaneous pain assessment during tooth pulp injury.

Injury of the tooth pulp is excruciatingly painful and yet the receptors and neural circuit mechanisms that transmit this form of pain remain poorly defined in both the clinic and preclinical rodent models. Easily quantifiable behavioral assessment in the mouse orofacial area remains a major bottleneck in uncovering molecular mechanisms that govern inflammatory pain in the tooth. In this study we sought to address this problem using the Mouse Grimace Scale and a novel approach to the application of mechanical Von Frey hair stimuli. We use a dental pulp injury model that exposes the pulp to the

[Traumatic injury of a permanent tooth by forceps delivery (presentation of a case)].

A case of malformation of an upper central permanent incisor is described. From the history, it is assumed that the isolated malformation of the affected tooth, No. 21, may be due to indirect consequences of a birth trauma (forceps delivery). The problems of developing malformations connected with this case are discussed generally and specifically for a single tooth.

The Reparative Function of MMP13 in Tertiary Reactionary Dentinogenesis after Tooth Injury.

MMP13 gene expression increases up to 2000-fold in mineralizing dental pulp cells (DPCs), with research previously demonstrating that global MMP13 deletion resulted in critical alterations in the dentine phenotype, affecting dentine-tubule regularity, the odontoblast palisade, and significantly reducing the dentine volume. Global MMP13-KO and wild-type mice of a range of ages had their molar teeth injured to stimulate reactionary tertiary dentinogenesis. The response was measured qualitatively and quantitatively using histology, immunohistochemistry, micro-CT, and qRT-PCR in order to assess ch

Management of an intruded tooth and adjacent tooth showing external resorption as a late complication of dental injury: three-year follow-up.

Treatment and prognosis of intrusive luxation can vary depending on the age of the patient, type of dentition, stage of root development, and time and severity of the trauma. Some studies have demonstrated that intrusions of up to 3.0 mm have an excellent prognosis, whereas teeth with severe intrusion or teeth that are intruded more than 6.0 mm present an unfavorable prognosis because of the occurrence of inflammatory resorption and pulp necrosis. The aim of this case report is to present an 11-year-old male patient with complete intrusion of the permanent maxillary left lateral incisor, assoc

Wnt-Responsive Odontoblasts Secrete New Dentin after Superficial Tooth Injury.

The objective of our experiments was to identify new therapeutic strategies to stimulate dentin formation in an adult tooth. To address this objective, we evaluated dentin production in 2 acute trauma models: one involving a pulp exposure and the other involving a superficial dentin injury. Molecular, cellular, and histologic analyses revealed that in response to a severe injury, where the pulp is exposed to the oral cavity, cell death is rampant and the repair response initiates from surviving pulp cells and, to a lesser extent, surviving odontoblasts. When an injury is superficial, as in the
