[Tooth loss and osteoporosis].

In spite of promoting the 8020 campaign in Japan, the number of residual teeth is 4.6 at the age of 80. The dental loss in adult is caused mainly by caries and/or periodontal disease. Although both osteoporosis and periodontal disease show symptoms to bone tissue, the correlation between osteoporosis and periodontal disease still remains not so clear. Further studies are necessary to detail the mechanism of periodontal bone resorption influenced by not only local factors but also systemic condition of bone metabolism.

Tooth loss and cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic subclinical inflammation may elevate the risk of cognitive impairment. Periodontitis is associated with subclinical inflammation and accounts in part for tooth loss. The hypothesis was tested that periodontitis and tooth loss as a proxy of chronic periodontitis is associated with cognitive impairment in the elderly. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The population-based Study of Health in Pomerania comprises 1336 subjects (60-79 years). Cognitive impairment was assessed with the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). Tobit regression analyses were adjusted for potential confounders.

Tooth loss and mandibular osteopenia.

The relationship between mandibular bone mass and tooth loss was studied in 269 patients who had neither metabolic disease nor local lesions affecting the mandibular cortex. In all of the subjects, the outline of the mental foramen was distinctly disclosed on unilateral or bilateral panoramic radiographs. Mandibular bone mass was evaluated by determining the mandibular cortical width in the mental region with the use of panoramic radiographs. The relationships of mandibular cortical width to patient age and sex and the number of teeth present were also investigated. In male subjects, there was

Postmenopausal osteoporosis and tooth loss.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine relation between tooth loss and general body bone mineral density in postmenopausal female who were seeking for prosthetic treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were included 79 women in this study (age from 49-81 years, mean age 62.9 years) with partial tooth loss. For all patients bone mineral density measurements for lumbar spine and both femoral necks by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (Lunar DEXA DPX-NT, GE Medical Systems) were performed. Based on DEXA results patients were divided into 3 groups: normal bone density (T-score ≥-1.0), os

Tooth loss in periodontal patients.

OBJECTIVE: To compare tooth loss between patients who received surgical therapy for chronic periodontitis and those who received nonsurgical therapy alone. METHODS: A retrospective chart study was conducted at Dalhousie University. All patients who had periodontal treatment and were active cases for at least 10 years were included (n = 335). The sample consisted of 120 males (35.8%) and 215 females (64.2%). Ages ranged from 16 to 77 (mean = 46.1 +/- 12.0 years). All patients received nonsurgical therapy; 44.8% received periodontal surgery as well. Variables recorded were demographics, initial

Associations between smoking and tooth loss according to the reason for tooth loss: the Buffalo OsteoPerio Study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is associated with tooth loss. However, smoking's relationship to the specific reason for tooth loss in postmenopausal women is unknown. METHODS: Postmenopausal women (n = 1,106) who joined a Women's Health Initiative ancillary study (The Buffalo OsteoPerio Study) underwent oral examinations for assessment of the number of missing teeth, and they reported the reasons for tooth loss. The authors obtained information about smoking status via a self-administered questionnaire. The authors calculated odds ratios (ORs) and 95 percent confidence intervals (CIs) by means of logis

Tooth loss and obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Complete tooth loss (edentulism) produces anatomical changes that may impair upper airway size and function. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether edentulism favours the occurrence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). METHODS: Polysomnography was performed in 48 edentulous subjects on two consecutive nights, one slept with and the other without dentures. Upper airway size was assessed by cephalometry and by recording forced mid-inspiratory airflow rate (FIF50). Exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) and oral NO (oNO), were measured as markers of airway and oropharyngeal inflammation. R

Tooth Loss and Dementia: A Critical Examination.

Dementia is a major contributor to dependence and disability in older people, with aging societies characterized by growing numbers of people living with the condition. Dementia rates are highest in those with low education early in life, midlife hypertension, midlife hearing loss, depression, obesity, loneliness, a sedentary lifestyle, or sustained exposure to smoking or diabetes. Tooth loss is a putative risk factor for dementia which has received increasing research attention, but systematic review findings are mixed. Three main mechanisms have been proposed, involving 1) tooth loss leading

Tooth loss and atherosclerosis: the Nagahama Study.

Several epidemiologic studies have suggested that oral disease is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, whether a clinically significant association exists between the 2 disorders remains controversial. Here, we investigated the association between tooth loss, as an indicator of oral disease, and arterial stiffness, as a marker of atherosclerosis, in Japanese adults. Cross-sectional data were collected for 8,124 persons aged 30 to 75 y with no history of tooth loss for noninflammatory reasons, such as orthodontic treatment, malposition, and trauma. Participants received a co

A preliminary investigation of postmortem tooth loss.

Forensic anthropologists have found a seemingly increased frequency of dismemberment cases and subsequent scattering of the elements that mandates developing unconventional methods of estimating postmortem interval. The chronological sequence in postmortem tooth loss has been investigated as an indicator for estimation of time since death. The anterior dentitions of cadavera were observed to discern patterns in "drop time" based on age, periodontal health, seasonality and location of body placement. Individuals deposited in the summer months lost teeth much more rapidly than those deposited in

Tooth loss explains income inequalities in dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Socioeconomic inequalities in oral health and dementia exist worldwide. This study investigated the mediating effects of tooth loss on the association between income and dementia. METHODS: This study used data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study, which targeted people aged ≥65 years. The explanatory variable was equivalent income in 2010. The outcome variable was dementia incidence between 2010 and 2022. Cox proportional hazard regression was used to examine the association between income and dementia incidence, adjusting for confounders. We performed causal mediation a

Tooth surface loss: causes, management, and prevention.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth wear, also referred to as tooth surface loss, occurs due to causes other than caries. This involves the loss of hard tissues, namely enamel, dentin, and/or cementum. Types of tooth wear/tooth surface loss are abrasion, abfraction, attrition, and erosion. These multifactorial conditions can be caused by factors such as lifestyle, diet, or even habits, and may not be symptomatic. The focus of this article is to provide clinicians with detailed examples and explanations of the causes of tooth loss to aid in early diagnosis. Through early identification, the preventive measures o

Mapping Tooth Loss at the Tooth Level: Associations with Demographic, Health, and Behavioral Factors.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional observational study analyzed patterns of tooth loss across different population groups using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2009 to 2018, aiming to identify the teeth most at risk and the key contributing factors. METHODS: Data from 24,945 adults aged 20 y and older were analyzed. Tooth presence/absence was modeled in relation to age, income, education, smoking history, and glycemic status. To improve robustness, missing covariate data were imputed using k-nearest neighbors, and survey weights were applied in regression anal

Tooth loss rate and death in older adults.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to obtain a new indicator, tooth loss rate (TLR), to predict death and raise the awareness among older adults to prevent tooth loss in advance. METHODS: In this population-based study, data of participants older than 65 years were drawn from 3 cohorts enrolled in 2005, 2008, and 2011 from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. The TLR was calculated for each participant by dividing the difference between the number of teeth at baseline and the first follow-up by the time difference between the surveys. The median is considered the boundary between rapi
