Torture : quarterly journal on rehabilitation of torture victims and prevention of torture2018eng
Classical perspectives on sexualized torture are being increasingly challenged by contemporary debates informed by emerging claims (Mendez, 2016; Sáez, 2016; Sifris, 2014). Gender-based analysis based on feminist and other theoretical approaches is needed to adequately address these. Arriving at a general framework for the reconceptualization of torture, and progressively widening the analytical scope of gender and torture, are priorities. Gender analyses of torture needs to encompass a broader range of phenomena, from rape and attacks on sexual integrity to any suffering inflicted on human be

Detainees may be subjected to torture and extra-judicial execution by State actors and terrorists. But, the pathology of torture has not been well-described. This is due to the lack of autopsies performed on victims of torture, mostly due to the disposal of the bodies of the victims by their torturers. On this basis, the cause of death of detainees subjected to torture is often a matter of speculation or remains obscure. This paper provides an overview of the pathology of torture based on the authour's experience with the autopsies of torture victims. At autopsy, many different types of inflic

PURPOSE: Although there are different definitions of torture, there is no contradiction that torture exists. Changes resulting from torture are shown to demonstrate which findings can be visualized with X-rays.
MATERIAL: The findings come from rehabilitation centers for victims of torture, collections of others and from personal observations. They are documented with plain films, scintigraphy, computed tomography, and MRI.
RESULTS: On fingers, hand, and arm, and on toes, foot and leg, imaging can visualize changes and pathologies which are characteristic for preceding torture. On head, neck,

Twenty-eight Turkish refugees living in Denmark were examined by the authors in the period 1984-85. Fourteen of the persons alleged having been tortured in Turkey during the period 1980-83. The remaining 14 persons reported that they had not been tortured and thus acted as controls. All the testimonies were found valid according to a method previously used by us. The most common forms of violence reported were blows and electrical torture. Blindfolding, solitary confinement and threats were also frequent. At the time of examination the main mental complaints were sleep disturbances with nightm

Doctors from both non-democratic and democratic countries are involved in torture. The majority of doctors involved in torture are doctors at risk. Doctors at risk might compromise their ethical duty towards patients for the following possible reasons: individual factors (such as career, economic or ideological reasons), threats, orders from a higher ranking officer, political initiatives, working in atrocity-producing situations or dual loyalty. In dual loyalty conflicts, factors that might compromise doctors' ethical obligations towards detainees/patients are: ideological totalitarianism, mo

UNLABELLED: Many refugees in the developed world are survivors of torture and present with health needs without their traumatic experience being disclosed or identified. Chronic pain is a common problem, as are symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and other distress. Current circumstances, particularly poverty, uncertainty about asylum, separation from or loss of family and roles, and difficulties settling in the host country, all contribute to current psychological problems and exacerbate existing ones. Psychological treatment studies tend to be focused eith

Torture is common today and is practised in over 100 countries according to Amnesty International. A substantial number of refugees coming to Europe have been tortured including females. Documentation of physical injuries due to torture is done by forensic pathologists often in collaboration with psychiatrists. In Sweden, the majority of torture documentations is done by an organization (KTC) which have specialized in documenting torture, and in short-term therapy of refugees and other crime victims suffering from post-traumatic stress. From the KTC archives of 500 documented alleged torture v

Hyperpigmentation after torture in darker skinned patients has regularly been noted, although its pathophysiology, and thus its forensic importance, has not previously been documented. Hyperpigmentation is not well described in the dermatological literature. It is the result of inflammation. Any inflammation can cause hyperpigmentation, and the shape of the resulting lesion can closely follow the contours of the site of original inflammatory response. This can be important in correlating the lesion with the alleged cause. It also helps to establish the differential diagnosis of the lesion, whi

The article will give a brief introduction to what we understand by the term Asphyxiation. The main focus will then turn to how Asphyxiation is used as a method of torture, (often euphemistically called a "method of interrogation") with an overview of wet methods such as immersion in water or the pouring of water over the mouth and nose, and dry methods such as the use of bags/sacks/masks and how exacerbating factors such as the use of contaminants or irritants are used. The recently published International Forensic Expert Group Statement on Hooding will be introduced and the notion will be ex

BACKGROUND: Refugees and asylum seekers continue to enter the United States and the European Union in record numbers. Some have estimated that between 5-35% of all refugees have suffered torture in their countries of origin. Although general practitioners and specialized physicians are likely to encounter victims of torture as patients, few providers are familiar with the health problems that may affect this patient population.
PURPOSE: :To provide neurologists, neurosurgeons, and rehabilitation medicine physicians with basic knowledge about survivors of torture that can help in the diagnosis

One of the main complaints in torture survivors is sleep disturbance with nightmares, too little sleep and daytime fatigue. Seven subjects, who had been exposed to torture from 6 months to seven years previously, were examined by polysomnography. All had abnormal sleep patterns compared with normal age- and sex-matched controls. The subjects woke frequently from REM sleep, had reduced REM sleep duration, absent Stage 4 sleep, short total sleep time and low sleep efficiency. This study revealed that previously healthy young persons subjected to extreme stress may develop an abnormal sleep patte

In recent years, the arrival in Italy of people who suffered torture in their countries led a group of volunteer doctors to set up a humanitarian association, "Doctors Against Torture", to provide care and treatment for torture survivors present in Rome. The paper describes the characteristics of 354 persons having at least one access from 1-1-1999 to 31-12-2001. About 51% of the victims came from the Middle East, 43% from Africa. Mean age was 29.6 (SD 7.0). The victims have suffered beatings and other forms of blunt trauma (64%), suspension and other positional torture (14%), psychological vi

Descriptions and differentiating factors in post-torture lesions are described and discussed, from the point of view of the medical examination of persons alleging physical abuse of human rights. The lesions caused by various methods of torture are described. The material and expertise is drawn from a long experience both in clinical practice and in the examination of refugees and asylum-seekers who claim to have been tortured.

The United Nations Convention against Torture came into force on June 1987 and the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture on 1 February 1989. The two Conventions are complementary and do not overlap in any respect, including their relevance to training of health personnel. The United Nations Convention calls for education of all doctors and other health personnel. Education should therefore be at the undergraduate level and should provide an insight into torture methods, the goal and objectives of torture and the sequelae of torture so that doctors can identify victims of torture. This article explores the psychopolitical logic of torture within the Palestinian context, focusing on its role as a tool of domination and resistance. Torture in Palestine is not merely an instrument for inflicting individual suffering but is a strategic mechanism employed by the Israeli state to dismantle collective identity, suppress resistance, and erode the dignity of the Palestinian people. Since the onset of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, the scale and brutality of torture tactics, including physical abuse, psychological manipulation, and sexual violence, have intensified, highlightin

Two patients who were systematically tortured and deprived of any oral intake presented with acute renal failure several days later. Unlike the classical crush syndrome, we describe a clinical entity wherein repeated direct muscle injury from blunt trauma, in addition to forced dehydration, led to myoglobinuria and renal failure. The literature is reviewed, and biochemical indices predicting severity of injury, pathophysiology, and management protocol are described. This pseudo-crush syndrome caused by rhabdomyorhexis in addition to rhabdomyolysis is an unusual entity, in part related to extre

Ten cases of acute renal failure (ARF) were seen in the period from July 1990 to August 1991 in the Nephrology Department of the SIMS Hospital, Srinagar. All were males in the age group of 18-28 years and in apparent good health when apprehended by the police. There was alleged history of physical torture of different types. All had been beaten on the buttocks, back and limbs; in addition, 2 cases had been given repeated electric shocks and 1 case put to 'sit-and-stand' exercise for about 3 h. The interval between the first day of torture till they came to our observation varied from 4 to 11 d
