To touch or to be touched? comparing appraisal of vicarious execution and reception of interpersonal touch.

Unmyelinated C-Tactile (CT) fibres are activated by caress-like touch, eliciting a pleasant feeling that decreases for static and faster stroking. Previous studies documented this effect also for vicarious touch, hypothesising simulation mechanisms driving the perception and appreciation of observed interpersonal touch. Notably, less is known about appreciation of vicarious execution of touch, that is as referred to the one giving gentle touch. To address this issue, 53 healthy participants were asked to view and rate a series of videoclips displaying an individual being touched by another on

Getting in touch: A neural model of comforting touch.

Comforting touch involves contact distress-alleviating behaviors of an observer towards the suffering of a target. A growing number of studies have investigated the effects of touch on pain attenuation, focusing on the (toucher), the target (comforted) or both. Here we synthesize findings of brain mechanisms underlying comforting touch in the target and toucher to propose an integrative brain model for understanding how touch attenuates distress. Building on evidence from the pain and distress literatures, our model applies interchangeably to pain and distress regulation. We describe comfortin

Will the Artificial Intelligence Touch Substitute for the Human Touch?

Nowadays, artificial intelligence is used in many fields to diagnose and treat different diseases. Robots are also useful tools that substitute for human work. Despite robots being used also for touch therapy, can they substitute for the human touch? Human touch has a strong social component, and it is necessary for the correct development of newborns and the treatment of pathological situations. To substitute human touch, it is necessary to integrate robots with artificial intelligence as well as with sensors that mimic human skin. Today, the question remains without answer: Can human touch b

Unfolding falciform folds and their consequences - To touch or not to touch.

BACKGROUND: Falciform folds are congenital tractional retinal folds due to strong contractile forces and hyperextensibility of retina resulting in temporal dragging of the macula and often associated with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy and retinal detachment (RD). Retinologists are reluctant to treat these entities in view of their poor visual recovery. PURPOSE: To describe a novel surgical technique to unfold the falciform folds. SYNOPSIS: This video demonstrates innovative surgical techniques to remove both pre-retinal and sub-retinal adhesions and unfold these folds, managing its co

Hand-touch contact assessment of high-touch and mutual-touch surfaces among healthcare workers, patients, and visitors.

BACKGROUND: Unlike direct contact with patients' body, hand hygiene practice is often neglected by healthcare workers (HCWs) and visitors after contact with patients' environment. Contact with hospital environmental items may increase risk of pathogen transmission. AIM: To enumerate the number of hand-touch contacts by patients, HCWs and visitors with any hospital environmental items. METHODS: All contact-episodes between person and item were recorded by direct observation in a six-bed cubicle of acute wards for 33 working days. High-touch and mutual-touch items with high contact frequencies

Touching and being touched: where knowing and feeling meet.

Philosophers maintain that touch confers a sense of reality or grounding to perceptual experience. In touching oneself, one is simultaneously both subject and object of touch, a template for experiencing oneself as subject and object of intentions, feelings, and motivations, or intersubjectivity. Here, I explore a form of self-touch carefully documented by Winnicott in observing how the infant engages the transitional object. I compare the processes of self-loss in transitional states, including absorption in art, empathic immersion, drug-induced ego dissolution, and depersonalization. I use e

[Touched by an angel].

The case of a 4-year-old boy with a symmetrical deformity of the 5th fingers is presented. Radiographs showed dysplastic development of the middle phalanx resembling the shape of ''Christmas tree angels''. A finding typical for Angel-shaped phalango-epiphyseal dysplasia (ASPED). Differential diagnosis, associated conditions and treatment are discussed.

Words that touch.

In this paper the author examines her own use of language as a psychoanalyst and asks: what is the best way to help analyse and to find the words to express not only what they are thinking but also what they are feeling and experiencing? In common with other psychoanalysts, the author has observed that each of us simultaneously utilises both advanced psychic mechanisms that are accessible to symbolism and more archaic ones, which are less so. However, she draws a distinction between people who are able to tolerate the perception of their own heterogeneity, even if it is sometimes a source of s

Intermittent touch syndrome.

Intermittent touch of a pseudophakos to the corneal endothelium is heralded by three signs: ciliary flush, (local) corneal dystrophy, and cystoid macular edema. This syndrome is often missed, and should be ruled out whenever any one of these three signs is detected. Once diagnosed, elimination of the touch should be accomplished promptly. If discovered early, the syndrome may be reversed.

"No Touch to Touch": Percutaneous Sclerotherapy of a Giant Hepatic Cavernous Hemangioma.

Cavernous hemangiomas were originally taught as "no touch lesions" as they were benign, hypervascular, venous malformations. They are commonly found in the liver. Patients typically present asymptomatically, and these hemangiomas can be found incidentally on imaging as solitary or multiple lesions. A 42-year-old male patient arrived at our institution after a motor vehicle collision, and a giant hemangioma was found incidentally on imaging with a classic feature of peripheral nodular enhancement on arterial phase computed tomography (CT) imaging. However, the patient continued to report right

Vicarious Perception of Touch in ASD: The Role of Empathy and Touch Experiences.

C-Tactile (CT) targeted affective touch plays a central role in social cognition and emotional development. In autism, atypical sensory processing, particularly in response to tactile stimulation, has frequently been reported. Autistic individuals have been shown to exhibit altered perception and reduced hedonic evaluation of affective touch, as well as increased defensive responses. Despite these differences in direct touch, the perception of vicarious social touch or its connection to social and emotional constructs remains poorly explored. Vicarious touch is theoretically relevant because i

Touch down: the effect of artificial touch cues on orientation in microgravity.

Orienting oneself in space is not an easy task. On Earth, we combine visual, vestibular and pressure cues into a coherent concept of up and down. Since there are no cues from gravity in space, astronauts have to adjust the way they determine up from down, with the possible risk of space motion sickness. In three tasks performed by one astronaut in the International Space Station (ISS), we examined the effect of artificial touch cues presented to the torso. The role of "natural" touch cues on spatial orientation in microgravity, such as pressure presented to the sole of the feet, has already be

Seems Like a Touch? Comparing Emotional Experience and Illusion of Touch of Visual and Haptic Presentations of Mediated Social Touch in VR.

Social virtual reality (VR) applications enable users to experience highly immersive mediated interactions and social experiences. Especially embodied nonverbal communication, like mediated social touch, is mostly unique to social VR and potentially a major factor in enabling fulfilling emotional experiences at a distance. In our within-subjects study ($N = 28$), we compared feedback from wearable vibrotactile haptic devices with two established visual presentation forms of social touch: clipping and pseudo-haptics. Our findings suggest that the addition of haptic feedback can elicit significa

Self-touch: Contact durations and point of touch of spontaneous facial self-touches differ depending on cognitive and emotional load.

Every human being spontaneously touches its eyes, cheeks, chin and mouth manifold every day. These spontaneous facial self-touches (sFST) are elicited with little or no awareness and are distinct from gestures and instrumental acts. Self-touch frequency has been shown to be influenced by negative affect and attention distraction and may be involved in regulating emotion and working memory functions. Yet, even though self-touch research dates back several decades fundamental aspects, like the temporal progression of sFST or the effects of executing hand and touched face area, have not yet been

Touch, communication and affect: a systematic review on the use of touch in healthcare professions.

BACKGROUND: The following systematic review explores the uses and understandings of physical, human-to-human touch engagements in healthcare professions. Given its central importance as both a diagnostic tool and a form of non-verbal communication, this review sought to understand the communicative, social and affective dimensions of touches a part of healthcare, medical or nursing interventions. We attempt to understand how touch communication seems to be structured in the literature, and what tends to be communicated via touch, but also to highlight how the dogmatic distinction between 'inst

Somatosensory activations during the observation of touch and a case of vision-touch synaesthesia.

In this study, we describe a new form of synaesthesia in which visual perception of touch elicits conscious tactile experiences in the perceiver. We describe a female subject (C) for whom the observation of another person being touched is experienced as tactile stimulation on the equivalent part of C's own body. Apart from this clearly abnormal synesthetic experience, C is healthy and normal in every other way. In this study, we investigate whether C's 'mirrored touch' synesthetic experience is caused by overactivity in the neural system that responds to the observation of touch. A functional
