Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research2026eng
C-Tactile (CT) targeted affective touch plays a central role in social cognition and emotional development. In autism, atypical sensory processing, particularly in response to tactile stimulation, has frequently been reported. Autistic individuals have been shown to exhibit altered perception and reduced hedonic evaluation of affective touch, as well as increased defensive responses. Despite these differences in direct touch, the perception of vicarious social touch or its connection to social and emotional constructs remains poorly explored. Vicarious touch is theoretically relevant because i

RATIONALE: Affiliative tactile interactions help regulate physiological arousal and confer resilience to acute and chronic stress. C-tactile afferents (CTs) are a population of unmyelinated, low threshold mechanosensitive cutaneous nerve fibres which respond optimally to a low force stimulus, moving at between 1 and 10 cm/s. As CT firing frequencies correlate positively with subjective ratings of touch pleasantness, they are hypothesised to form the first stage of encoding affiliative tactile interactions. Serotonin is a key modulator of social responses with known effects on bonding.

In humans, touching the skin is known to activate, among others, the contralateral primary somatosensory cortex on the postcentral gyrus together with the bilateral parietal operculum (i.e. the anatomical site of the secondary somatosensory cortex). But which brain regions beyond the postcentral gyrus specifically contribute to the perception of touch remains speculative. In this study we collected structural magnetic resonance imaging scans and neurological examination reports of patients with brain injuries or stroke in the left or right hemisphere, but not in the postcentral gyrus as the en

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a disorder characterized by restricted eating, fears of gaining weight, and body image distortions. The etiology remains unknown; however impairments in social cognition and reward circuits contribute to the onset and maintenance of the disorder. One possibility is that AN is associated with reduced perceived pleasantness during social interactions. We therefore examined the perception of interpersonal, 'affective touch' and its social modulation in AN. We measured the perceived pleasantness of light, dynamic stroking touches applied to the forearm of 25 AN patients an

Social touch is essential to everyday interactions, but current socially assistive robots have limited touch-perception capabilities. Rather than build entirely new robotic systems, we propose to augment existing rigid-bodied robots with an external touch-perception system. This practical approach can enable researchers and caregivers to continue to use robotic technology they have already purchased and learned about, but with a myriad of new social-touch interactions possible. This paper presents a low-cost, easy-to-build, soft tactile-perception system that we created for the NAO robot, as w

Visual touch perception is fundamental to body awareness and social bonding, helping us perceive ourselves and connect with others. However, understanding its neural basis has been limited by a lack of comprehensive public datasets. To address this, we present an electroencephalography (EEG) and self-report dataset from 80 participants. It includes neural responses from 2,880 trials per participant, during which participants viewed touch interactions between two hands involving either direct skin contact or object-mediated touch. Complementing the EEG data are self-report measures on empathy,

Earlier studies have revealed that the calibration of an action sometimes transfers in a functionally specific way-the calibration of one action transfers to other actions that serve the same goal, even when they are performed with different anatomical structures. In the present study, we tested whether attunement (the process by which perceivers learn to detect a more useful, specifying, informational pattern) follows such a functional organization. Participants were trained to perceive the length of rods by dynamic touch with one of their effectors. It was found that training the right hand

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is often characterized by self-injurious behaviors, with one-half to two-third of these patients reporting hypalgesic or analgesic phenomena during self-harming. Research on pain perception in BPD suggested abnormal processing of nociception either within the sensory-discriminative and/or motivational-affective systems of pain. Nevertheless, it is still unclear whether pain insensitivity could be generalized to other somatosensory submodalities. To investigate this question, 30 BPD patients and 30 matched healthy controls were enrolled in the current study

Stroking touch has been shown to be most pleasant at intermediate velocities of 1-10 cm s-1, which relates well to the activity of C-low-threshold mechanoreceptors (C-LTMRs), also called C-tactile afferents in humans, that have been implicated in encoding positive affective touch. This well-established finding has been demonstrated at gentle stroking forces (typically, 0.4 N peak normal force), yet few studies have investigated the effect of force on the perception of stroking touch or on the activity of C-LTMRs. We investigated the pleasantness and intensity of stroking touch (0.3, 1, 3, 10 a

The buckling of a slender monofilament is a standard clinical method used to assess touch sensory perception, with specific applications to somatosensory impairment in patients after a stroke, detecting carpal tunnel syndrome, and as a prognosis tool for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The basis of this approach is the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament, which comprises a calibrated set of thin, polycarbonate rods with different diameters. Application of a monofilament onto the surface of the skin with increasing pressure causes the rod to buckle. That is, at a specific force of pushing down on the

Touch plays a significant role in human social behavior and social communication, and its rewarding nature has been suggested to involve opioids. Opioid blockade in monkeys leads to increased solicitation and receipt of grooming, suggesting heightened enjoyment of touch. We sought to study the role of endogenous opioids in perception of affective touch in healthy adults and in patients with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition shown to involve reduced opioid receptor availability. The pleasantness of touch has been linked to the activation of C-tactile fibers, which respond maximally to slow

Previous studies on tactile experiences have investigated a wide range of material surfaces across various skin sites of the human body in self-touch or other touch modes. Here, we investigate whether the sensory and emotional aspects of touch are related when evaluating wooden surfaces using fingertips in the absence of other sensory modalities. Twenty participants evaluated eight different pine and oak wood surfaces, using sensory and emotional touch descriptors, through the lateral motion of active fingertip exploration. The data showed that natural and smooth wood surfaces were perceived m

Insects navigate cluttered environments using slender, flexible antennae densely packed with mechanosensors, a lightweight, energy-efficient solution for tactile perception. We introduce CITRAS (Cockroach-Inspired Tactile Robotic Antenna Sensor), a miniature, compliant, multi-segment tactile probe aimed at enabling similarly capable close-range perception on insect-scale robots under stringent size, mass, and power constraints. CITRAS (total size: 73.7 × 15.6 mm × 2.11 mm; mass: 491 mg) features eight flexural hinge segments, each with high-resolution capacitive sensors embedded within a compl

Fine touch perception is often correlated to material properties and friction coefficients, but the inherent variability of human motion has led to low correlations and contradictory findings. Instead, we hypothesized that humans use frictional instabilities to discriminate between objects. Here, we constructed a set of coated surfaces with minimal physical differences, but due to differences in surface chemistry, generated different types of instabilities depending on how quickly a finger is slid and pressed during sliding. In one experiment, we used a mechanical mock finger to quantify and c

How do extreme degrees of positive emotion-such as those characteristic of mania-influence emotion perception? The present study investigated how mania proneness, assessed using the Hypomanic Personality Scale, influences the perception of emotion via touch. Using a validated dyadic interaction paradigm for communicating emotion through touch (Hertenstein, Keltner, App, Bulleit, & Jaskolka, 2006), participants (N=53) received eight different touches to their forearm from a stranger and then identified the emotion via forced-choice methodology. Mania proneness predicted increased overall accura

Social touch plays a vital role in human development, communication, and general well-being. However, the mechanisms underlying how social touch elicits pleasant or aversive responses are poorly understood. Furthermore, it remains unclear how alterations in sensory processing, at both the perceptual level (i.e. detection and discrimination of stimuli) and behavioral level (i.e. response to stimuli), shape the experience of social touch, in addition to contextual factors such as gender and culture. In the current study, we used vibrotactile psychophysics and a novel social touch paradigm to ass

In-hand object pose estimation is challenging for humans and robots due to occlusion caused by the hand and object. This paper proposes a soft finger that integrates inner vision with kinesthetic sensing to estimate object pose inspired by human fingers. The soft finger has a flexible skeleton and skin that adapts to different objects, and the skeleton deformations during interaction provide contact information obtained by the image from the inner camera. The proposed framework is an end-to-end method that uses raw images from soft fingers to estimate in-hand object pose. It consists of an enc

Disruptions in reward processing and anhedonia have long been observed in Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Interoceptive deficits have also been observed in AN, including reduced tactile pleasure. However, the extent to which this tactile anhedonia is specifically liked to an impairment in a specialised, interoceptive C-tactile system originating at the periphery, or a more top-down mechanism in the processing of tactile pleasantness remains debated. Here, we investigated differences between patients with and recovered from AN (RAN) and healthy controls (HC) in the perception of pleasantness of touch de

Social touch is necessary for the healthy development of trust. Although casual touch has been assumed to affect emotion and decision-making through a parallel mechanism, this has been challenging to test: How does touch affect learning to associate trust with people? A social version of the Iowa Gambling Task was designed by replacing cards with faces and associating these with tactile stimuli and economic outcomes. We measured how learned associations affected 1) choice preference during the Social Gambling Test (SGT), 2) face preferences in a subsequent oddball EEG task featuring SGT-stimul

Gentle stroking that activates C-tactile afferents is typically pleasant, calming and pain relieving. Deep pressure touch frequently elicits similar affective responses. However touch is often less pleasant for individuals with chronic pain. It is important to understand the reasons for this clinical difference because of the close relationship of pain with reduced social connection, and the widespread use of touch-based therapies for pain relief. It is not known whether differences in touch perception in chronic pain relate to pain-specific processes or to comorbid affective symptoms. The cur
