During a one-year period, 31 trabeculectomies were done in 25 patients. Of these procedures, 27 (87%) were done for chronic open angle glaucoma, three (10%) for congenital glaucoma, and one for chronic open angle glaucoma in an aphakic patient. Our overall success rate was 87%. Complications were few: only two of 31 flat anterior chambers persisted postoperatively. Visual acuity dropped significantly (two lines on the Snellen visual acuity chart) in only one patient.

Trabeculectomy as first choice of treatment has been performed on 100 consecutive cases in Africans. During the follow-up period ranging from 2 to 12 months, 79 eyes had a postoperative intraocular pressure of less than 21 mm Hg without any antiglaucomatous medications. Fourteen eyes operated upon (14%) had a postoperative intraocular pressure between 22 and 26 mm Hg. Seven cases (7%) showed an intraocular pressure higher than 28 mm Hg. Hypotony and hyphema encountered in 8 cases were a minor postoperative complication. Protrusion of the iris in the surgical wound occurring in 2 cases was a ma

PURPOSE: To compare outcomes of trabeculectomy (TRAB) performed after Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation with those of repeat TRAB and to identify factors related to surgical failure.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients who underwent a second TRAB were divided into 2 groups: TRAB after AGV implantation (TaA) and repeat TRAB (TaT). Primary outcome was surgical success, defined as a postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) <21 mm Hg or a ≥20% reduction from baseline, with or without glaucoma medications. Preoperative and postoperative IOP and IOP reduction rates were compared th

The outcomes of the trabeculectomy which finally establish one normal ocular pressure are presented. The surgery method is adjustment of the thickness of the sclera, fragment depending on the initial ocular pressure. The evacuation of the aqueous humor after trabeculectomy is indirect proportionally with the thickness of the scleral fragment. The method was used in 36 eyes with different patterns of glaucoma. At this patients the initial ocular pressure was until 50 mm Hg. In 72.2% from cases was necessary only one surgery intervention for maintain the ocular pressure, without auxiliary drugs;

The technique and results of a trabeculectomy are presented where the desired final intraocular pressure (IOP) is obtained by means of adjusting the thickness of sclerocorneal tissue removed to the initial pressure. The procedure was used in 35 eyes with all types of glaucoma and pre-operative pressures of up to 50 mmHg. In 78.3% of cases one operation was sufficient to control the IOP without additional medication. Two eyes had to be reoperated on, and 7 more needed additional pressure-lowering medication. The overall success rate, therefore, rose to 97.3%. The only failure occurred in an eye

Purpose: To compare the outcome of fixed suture trabeculectomy with releasable suture trabeculectomy in terms of IOP control, bleb morphology, complications and need of antiglaucoma medication post-surgery. Methods: This study enlisted 200 cases of open angle glaucoma, whose IOP was uncontrolled despite maximal medication. Trabeculectomy was performed using releasable suture in one group of 100 patients and fixed suture in another group of 100 with mitomycin 0.02% in both groups. The study was randomized, the method being the simple randomization. Fornix based trabeculectomy was done in both g

This paper aimed to assess the outcome of primary trabeculectomy for congenital glaucoma and to compare it with a combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy procedure. The combined procedure was assessed using a prospective trial for children with primary glaucoma under the age of 1 year (n = 16). The primary trabeculectomy was assessed retrospectively using similar patients treated at the same hospital from 1981 to 1990 (n = 44). After 24 months of follow up, the cumulative chance of success of the primary trabeculectomy was 72% and this was compared with the combined procedure of 93.5%. Primary t

AIM: To evaluate outcomes of ab interno trabeculectomy (AIT) with the trabectome following failed trabeculectomy.
METHODS: Prospective study of AITs and phaco-AITs after a failed trabeculectomy. The indication for AIT was intraocular pressure (IOP) above target on maximally tolerated therapy, and for phaco-AIT a visually significant cataract and need to lower IOP or glaucoma medications. Outcomes included IOP, medications, complications, secondary procedures and success, defined as IOP of less than 21 mm Hg and a greater than 20% reduction from baseline without further surgery. The aim of the present study was to introduce a new modified trabeculectomy technique, stab incision mitomycin C (MMC)-assisted rapid trabeculectomy (SMART), which requires less surgical time and tissue manipulation. A total of 41 eyes with indication for trabeculectomy underwent glaucoma surgery with the SMART technique; superior subconjunctival injection of 0.005 mg MMC mixed with 0.1 ml lidocaine, followed by small, fornix base conjunctival opening. A stab incision was made to enter the anterior chamber 1.5 mm post-limbus using a 2.4 mm cataract knife. Double 0.75 mm punch and peripheral ir

Anterior chamber drainage angle surgery, namely trabeculotomy and goniotomy, has been commonly utilized in children for many years. Its' reported success has ranged between 68% and 100% in infants and young children with congenital glaucoma. However, the long-term success of these procedures has been limited in adults presumably due to the formation of anterior synechiae (AS) in the postoperative phase. Recently, ab interno trabeculectomy with the Trabectome™ has emerged as a novel surgical approach to effectively and selectively remove and ablate the trabecular meshwork and the inner wall of

The technique of trabeculectomy is presented as it has been done in 370 eyes at the University Eye Clinic in Graz. Possible mistake are pointed out. The knowledge of the mechanism of this operation enables us to prevent a hypotony and to create the best conditions for the incorporation of veins and lymphatic vessels in the surgic area.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the short-term clinical outcomes of microincisional trabeculectomy (MIT), a new technique of ab-interno trabeculectomy.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with open-angle glaucoma identified from the hospital database that underwent MIT with or without cataract surgery between September 2021 to June 2022 at a tertiary eye centre in East India, were screened. Those with a follow-up of < 6 months or with incomplete data were excluded. MIT was done ab-interno using microscissors and microforceps in 2-4 clock hours of the nasal angle via a temporal incision. The objective of this study is to evaluate the visual prognosis and postoperative course in advanced glaucoma patients who underwent trabeculectomy. The records of 30 patients with advanced visual field (VF) defects undergoing trabeculectomy were retrospectively reviewed. Severe VF defects were defined as those with a sensitivity of ≤5 dB either in more than 85% of test points, excluding the central four points, or in >75% of test points, including three of the central four points with threshold automated perimetry. Main outcome measures were intraocular pressure (IOP), corrected visual acuity

The occurrence of early hypotony after trabeculectomy was analysed retrospectively in 60 glaucoma patients. Fifty-two per cent of the eyes had an intraocular pressure < or = 10 mmHg on the first postoperative day. In about one-third of the eyes, the intraocular pressure was < or = 5 mmHg at the first postoperative visit and in more than 70% of these eyes the hypotony was almost unchanged one week after operation. The hypotony one week after operation was not correlated to the age of the patients and the intraocular pressure at operation, nor to the glaucoma type, and showed no significant stat

The effect of subconjunctival injection of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) after trabeculectomy was studied retrospectively in 205 eyes of 168 patients. A life table analysis of the surgical outcome was based on the type of glaucoma and age related differences, and a comparison was made with patients who had trabeculectomy without subconjunctival 5-FU. The success rate at 30 months after trabeculectomy with 5-FU therapy was considerably higher in primary open-angle glaucoma at 93.6% (72.7%), secondary glaucoma at 88.9% (72.4%), and refractory glaucoma at 72.2% (32.5%) with (or without) the use of ocular
