Track and Field Injuries: Imaging Aspects.

Track and field sports, also known as athletics, encompassing sports modalities such as running, jumping, and throwing, is a highly demanding sport with significant risk of injury. This review discusses the epidemiology, imaging techniques, and especially typical injury patterns associated with various track and field disciplines. Elite athletes, who undergo rigorous training and repetitive high-impact activities, are particularly prone to musculoskeletal injuries, with lower extremity injuries, such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, and bone stress injuries, the most common. Injury pattern

Medical coverage for track and field events.

Providing medical coverage at a track and field event is similar to other spectator events, but there are some important differences. With simultaneous events occurring over a large area, reliable communication with quick access to all event sites is mandatory. Preparation needs to include a prearranged emergency response plan for each event. Because field events involve throwing heavy and sometimes sharp objects (discus, hammer, shot put, and javelin) or landing in a cushioned pit (high jump, pole vault), sites need well-demarcated, constantly monitored boundaries with properly installed, wel

Track and Field Throwing Sports: Injuries and Prevention.

Throwing events in track and field are among the oldest sporting events in recorded history and include shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin. All throwing athletes use the kinetic chain to transfer energy from the lower extremities, through the pelvis, trunk, shoulder, arm, wrist, hand, and finally into the implement to generate maximum force. Throughout this sequential activation, mobilization, and stabilization of body segments, there is opportunity for breakdown in the chain, which can lead to injury. This review describes the biomechanics and kinetic chain components of each event and hig

Assessment of balance among adolescent track and field athletes.

Track and field events place different demands on athletes and may have an effect on balance. This study investigated the effects of event specialty, gender, and leg dominance on balance among adolescent track and field athletes. Forty healthy adolescent track and field athletes (male = 23, female = 17) categorised into three different groups (sprinter = 20, distance runners = 13, throwers = 7) had their single leg static balance measured with the eyes open and the eyes closed using an AMTI force platform. Dependent variables included average displacement (cm) of the centre of pressure (COP) i

Posterior thigh muscle injuries in elite track and field athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior thigh muscle injuries in athletes are common, and prediction of recovery time would be of value. HYPOTHESIS: Knee active range of motion deficit 48 hours after a unilateral posterior thigh muscle injury correlates with time to full recovery. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (prognosis); Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: One hundred sixty-five track and field athletes with acute, first-time, unilateral posterior thigh muscle injuries were prospectively evaluated regarding knee active range of motion deficit. This was compared with the uninjured side 48 hours after injury. A co

Relationship between floating toe score and performance in track and field athletes.

This study explored the relationship between floating toes and athletic performance among collegiate track and field athletes. A total of 422 athletes (sprinters, jumpers, and distance runners) and 136 controls participated in this study. Plantar surface images were captured using a specially designed foot scanner during standing to calculate the floating toe score. The score, which sums the floating toe points of all toes, categorizes them into 'floating toe', 'incomplete contact', or 'normal toe'. The World Athletics score served as a measure of athletic performance. Overall, collegiate trac

The Biomechanics of the Track and Field Sprint Start: A Narrative Review.

The start from blocks is a fundamental component of all track and field sprint events (≤ 400 m). This narrative review focusses on biomechanical aspects of the block phase and the subsequent first flight and stance phases. We discuss specific features of technique and how they may be important for a high level of performance during the start. The need to appropriately quantify performance is discussed first; external power has recently become more frequently adopted because it provides a single measure that appropriately accounts for the requirement to increase horizontal velocity as much as p

Measurements of roll, steering, and the far-field wake in track cycling.

A series of measurements taken with two instrumented track bicycles in a velodrome are presented. The bicycle wheel speed, cadence, roll angle, steering angle, power, and airspeed are recorded. The experimentally-measured values are compared to existing theoretical models of roll and steering angles. The accuracy of the roll angle calculations is dependent on the fidelity of the modelled cyclist path and decreases for higher riding speeds. Experimental measurements of the steering angle show a reasonable agreement to theoretical calculations, albeit with reduced steering angles on the bends at

Acute lateral ankle sprains in track and field athletes: an expanded classification.

We present a longitudinal observational study on classification of acute lateral ankle ligament injuries in track and field athletes, based on objective criteria. These very common and sometimes troublesome sports injuries are treated functionally, but there is a lack in international literature on predicting the time needed for full recovery. Taking into consideration (1) active range of motion, (2) edema, (3) stress radiographs findings, and (4) full rehabilitation time, we divided grade III sprains in IIIA and IIIB, proposing that these injuries can be classified in four categories (I, II,

Incidence and Risk Factors of Metabolic Syndrome in Track and Field Throwing Athletes.

Track and field (T&F) throwers are a prominent subgroup of athletes that may be at risk for the development of Metabolic Syndrome (MetSyn) and other cardiometabolic disease conditions. However, limited research exists examining the prevalence of MetSyn in these athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the incidence of MetSyn and associated risk factors in collegiate throwers. Collegiate Division I men (n=17) and women (n=4) T&F throwers participated in a single day of lab assessments, which included anthropometrics, body composition, blood pressure, a venous blood draw, an

Sex differences in elite track and field performances and inferences about steroid doping.

Females likely experience larger performance benefits from androgenic-anabolic steroids than males. We set out to determine if there were temporal differences in select athletics (track and field) records between females and males. Exploratory aims included: (1) evaluating the improvements in female and male world records over time, and (2) investigating the influence of doping programs on male and female world records before and after 1990, when sports governing bodies began to implement random out-of-competition and systematic in-competition drug testing. We collected the top 500 performance

Nutrition for the Prevention and Treatment of Injuries in Track and Field Athletes.

Injuries are an inevitable consequence of athletic performance with most athletes sustaining one or more during their athletic careers. As many as one in 12 athletes incur an injury during international competitions, many of which result in time lost from training and competition. Injuries to skeletal muscle account for over 40% of all injuries, with the lower leg being the predominant site of injury. Other common injuries include fractures, especially stress fractures in athletes with low energy availability, and injuries to tendons and ligaments, especially those involved in high-impact spor
