BACKGROUND: In Ghana, traditional medicine practitioners (TMPs) are often the first point of contact for women with breast health concerns. However, they operate independently of formal healthcare services. While their embeddedness within communities grants them cultural legitimacy, their perceptions of breast cancer remain underexplored. Understanding TMPs' explanatory models, recognition of signs, and diagnostic practices is crucial for improving early detection of breast cancer and reducing delays in accessing treatment that lead to poor outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative explor

Tongue diagnosis is an important practice in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for diagnosing diseases before determining proper means of treatments. Traditionally, it depends solely on personal knowledge and experience of the practitioner, thereby being criticized as lacking of objectivity. Currently, no research regarding intra- and inter-agreements of automatic tongue diagnosis system (ATDS) and TCM doctors has been conducted. In this study, the ATDS is developed to extract a variety of tongue features and provide practitioners with objective information to assist diagnoses. To evaluate th

BACKGROUND: Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is a common pediatric congenital musculoskeletal abnormality that may impact children’s development even quality of life if not managed appropriately. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) tuina is a manual therapy derived from the theoretical foundations of TCM, has become an important non-invasive intervention in pediatric clinical practice, particularly for the management of CMT. However, the factors influencing its application remain insufficiently explored. Understanding these factors from the perspective of TCM tuina practitioners is crucial

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) continues to be the leading cancer diagnosis and top cancer-related mortality globally among women globally including Ghana. Late stage reporting of breast cancer at health facilities is pervasive and largely attributed to patronage of traditional or herbal medicines practitioners (TMPs) prior to seeking orthodox treatment. However, there is a scarcity of research examining BC knowledge, perceptions and treatment practices among TMPs in Ghana. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: The objectives of this study were to assess the level of BC knowledge among TMPs, determine leve

The dominance of the Western medical model in mental health care has been increasingly questioned for its illness-focused orientation and limited effectiveness in promoting holistic well-being. This qualitative study explores how traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) offers a comprehensive, theoretically grounded, and clinically meaningful paradigm through the perspectives of 17 TCM practitioners in China. Using consensual qualitative research methodology, we conducted semistructured interviews to understand how TCM conceptualizes mental health, mental illness, prevention, and treatment. The resu

OBJECTIVE: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) incorporates traditional diagnostic methods and several major treatment modalities including Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese patent medicine, and non-pharmacological methods such as acupuncture and tuina. Even though TCM is used daily by more than 70,000 healthcare facilities and over 700,000 clinical practitioners in China, there is a poor understanding of the extent to which TCM diagnostic methods are used, how different treatment modalities are deployed in general, and what major factors may affect the integration of TCM and Western medicine. Prescribing is a significant activity undertaken by physicians, physician associates/assistants (PAs), and nurse practitioners (NPs). We analyzed prescribing data to understand better the growing presence of PAs and NPs in older adults. A trend in frequently prescribed medications was compared with other physicians. All prescriptions in Medicare Part D were grouped into broad categories of drugs and linked to each type of provider. The analysis spanned 9 years (2013-2021). The results revealed that all five providers similarly prescribed the top three main drug classes (antacids, antihypertens

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths are some of the priority neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) targeted for elimination by the World Health Organization (WHO). They are prevalent in Botswana and although Botswana has begun mass drug administration with the hope of eliminating soil-transmitted helminths as a public health problem, the prevalence of schistosomiasis does not meet the threshold required to warrant large-scale interventions. Although Botswana has a modern healthcare system, many people in Botswana rely on traditional medicine to treat worm infections and schistosomiasis

BACKGROUND: Globally, 5.1% of the global burden of disease and injury is attributable to alcohol in addition to its significant negative socio-economic impact. Uganda is ranked among the highest alcohol consuming countries in Africa with a reported alcohol per capita consumption of 9.5 liters, much higher than the 6.3 for the African region. Additionally, almost 10% of Ugandans aged 18 and older have an alcohol use disorder. African traditional medicine plays an important role towards universal health coverage in sub-Saharan Africa especially in rural areas. Anecdotal evidence shows that herba

BACKGROUND: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) in women is persistent, intermittent cyclical and non-cyclical lower abdominal pain, lasting for more than 6 months. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a popular treatment option for women's health conditions, but little is known about how treatment for CPP is delivered by TCM practitioners. The aim of this survey was to explore practitioners understanding and treatment of women with CPP, and how they integrate their management and care into the health care system.
METHOD: An online cross-sectional survey of registered TCM practitioners in Australia an

A 68-year-old female presented with a 1-month history of lower back pain with right-sided radiculopathy and numbness. She was diagnosed with lumbar spondylosis and treated conservatively with analgesia and physiotherapy. Imaging showed multiple susuk, a metal alloy, in the lower back region and other regions of the body. The patient had undergone traditional medicine consultation 10 years earlier when the susuk was inserted in the lower back as talisman. The practice of the insertion of susuk is popular in rural East Malaysia and Indonesia. These foreign bodies act as possible causes of chroni

BACKGROUND: One of the services that plants provide for human beings is their wider medicinal application. Although it is not fully assessed, the practice and wider use of traditional medicine is frequent in Ethiopia. Studies conducted previously are confined to the perceptions of modern and traditional health practitioners about traditional medicine. A total of 45 informants were selected purposefully from the study area. For collecting the data, semi-structured interviewees, observation and field walks were employed from August 10 to September 30/2014. To summarize the information, descripti

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, many ethnic communities use traditional/indigenous medicine for primary health care. However, this indigenous medicinal practice is being neglected and continued to be lost due to poor documentation as they are transferred from generation to generation through oral tradition. Therefore, this ethnozoological study aimed to assess and document the medicinal use of animals and animals' products used by traditional medicinal practitioners and indigenous people in Motta city administration and Hulet Eju Enessie Districts, East Gojjam Zone, Ethiopia.

Introduction: Traditional bone setters (TBS) treat orthopedic injuries using natural remedies and traditional medicine. These practices can result in complications, including malunion, non-union, or gangrenous extremities. Despite these complications, communities in low- and middle-income countries trust and rely on TBS for musculoskeletal injuries and pathologies. Understanding patients' motives for patronizing TBS is necessary to work with TBS to reduce complications. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess the reasons patients patronize TBS, identify demographic trends assoc

The separation of medicine and shamanism, which began during the Spring and Autumn Period, led to the emergence of "excellent physicians" who were distinct from shamans, a trend that continued from the Warring States Period through the early Han Dynasty. However, while there were some instances of these highly skilled physicians treating commoners, their medical practice was primarily concentrated among the ruling elite-including rulers, high-ranking officials, and those associated with them. Furthermore, physicians with outstanding treatment records in the general populace were sought after b
