Leveraging Simulation to Support Competency-Based Surgical Training.

CONTEXT: Simulation-enhanced education (SEE) has evolved from a supplementary activity into an evidence-supported cornerstone of medical education, yet in most surgical training programs it remains confined to formative use with little influence on high-stakes progression decisions. This disconnect limits SEE's contribution to patient safety, particularly at transition points where residents assume greater clinical autonomy. ISSUE: High-stakes decisions about readiness for autonomy in surgery continue to rely primarily on workplace-based assessments, which are vulnerable to bias, impression m

Advanced trauma life support training for ambulance crews.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing global burden of disease from injuries. Models of trauma care initially developed in high-income countries are also being adopted in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). Amongst these ambulance crews with Advanced Life Support (ALS) training are being promoted in LMIC as a strategy for improving outcomes for victims of trauma. However there is controversy as to the effectiveness of this health service intervention, and the evidence has yet to be rigorously appraised. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the effectiveness of ambulance crews with ALS training versus cre

Phasing out seclusion through staff training and support.

Seclusion raises considerable ethical issues. While many services aim to phase out this practice, little research has been conducted into how this can be achieved. This article describes the phasing out of seclusion from a locked ward in a hospital for people with learning disabilities. The implications of these findings for other services are discussed.

The effectiveness of staff support: evaluating active support training using a conditional probability approach.

Active Support, a package of procedures which includes activity planning, support planning, and training on providing effective assistance, was introduced in five community residences serving 19 adults with severe mental retardation following a multiple baseline design. Real-time observational data were collected on the level of assistance residents received from staff and their engagement in activity. Active Support was shown in a companion paper (Jones et al., 1999) to increase the levels of assistance residents received and their engagement in activity. Increased assistance was particularly

Treadmill training with partial body weight support after stroke.

Treadmill therapy with partial BWS is a promising new approach to improve gait ability after stroke. This task-specific approach enables nonambulatory patients the repetitive practice of complex gait cycles instead of single-limb gait-preparatory maneuvers. Patients walk more symmetrically with less spasticity and better cardiovascular efficiency on the treadmill than with floor walking. Several controlled, clinical studies have shown the potential of treadmill training as a therapeutic intervention for nonambulatory patients with chronic stroke-related hemiplegia. Furthermore, controlled tria

Deep learning-based predictions of older adults' adherence to cognitive training to support training efficacy.

As the population ages, the number of older adults experiencing mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease, and other forms of dementia will increase dramatically over the next few decades. Unfortunately, cognitive changes associated with these conditions threaten independence and quality of life. To address this, researchers have developed promising cognitive training interventions to help prevent or reverse cognitive decline and cognitive impairment. However, the promise of these interventions will not be realized unless older adults regularly engage with them over the long term, a

Could virtual reality training be effective for enhancing empathetic behaviours in disability support worker training.

PURPOSE: This position paper aims to: (1) summarise the current state of the Australian disability support sector and its need to advance training practices that enhance empathetic behaviours; (2) Highlight how virtual reality technology is currently being deployed in training in the sector; and (3) highlight challenges that may arise from a lack of user acceptance testing and user experience design considerations, and why future studies are needed to explore these factors. BACKGROUND: The disability support industry has responded to new market demands for DSWs to provide quality supports tha

Virtual reality as a tool supporting self-motivated training for disability support workers.

OBJECTIVES: Disability support workers play a critical role in supporting people living with disabilities, but may have limited formal training as time, resources, and funding constraints can make access to training difficult for this workforce. To prepare them for challenging work situations, virtual reality (VR) offers a safe, self-paced, and practice-based way to do self-motivated training to learn and practice relevant workplace skills. The aim of this study was to identify those aspects of a VR training experience that engages disability support workers, motivating them to choose it to bu

TagTrainer: supporting exercise variability and tailoring in technology supported upper limb training.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation technology for upper limb training can potentially increase the amount, duration, and quality of therapy offered to patients by targeting the needs of individual patients. Empirical evaluations of such technologies focus on clinical effectiveness; however, little is known regarding the implications of their implementation in daily practice. Tailoring training content to patients requires active participation by therapists, and requires an extension of their role to include authoring and modifying exercises. It is not yet known whether this is feasible, and the socio-

First Results of Peer Training for Medical Staff-Psychosocial Support through Peer Support in Health Care.

BACKGROUND: In view of the increasing strain on health workers, psychosocial support measures are becoming more important. The core of a sustainable concept is the establishment of peer support teams. Two aspects are central: first, target group-specific training content, and second, suitable staff members who are trained as peers. The goal of the study was to obtain a first look at what content can be taught in peer training for medical staff, how the training is evaluated by the target group, and which people are interested in training from peers. METHODS: During the period 2017-2022, Peer

Doctoral training to support sustainable soil geochemistry research in Africa.

Africa's potential for scientific research is not yet being realized, for various reasons including a lack of researchers in many fields and insufficient funding. Strengthened research capacity through doctoral training programmes in higher education institutes (HEIs) in Africa, to include collaboration with national, regional and international research institutions, can facilitate self-reliant and sustainable research to support socio-economic development. In 2012, the Royal Society and the UK's Department for International Development (now the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) la

Crowdsourcing to support training for public health: A scoping review.

Crowdsourcing is an interactive process that has a group of individuals attempt to solve all or part of a problem and then share solutions with the public. Crowdsourcing is increasingly used to enhance training through developing learning materials and promoting mentorship. This scoping review aims to assess the literature on crowdsourcing for training in public health. We searched five medical and public health research databases using terms related to crowdsourcing and training. For this review, the concept of crowdsourcing included open calls, designathons, and other activities. We used a P

Survey of the training needs of genetic assistants supports the creation of genetic assistant training programs.

Despite the increasing numbers of genetic assistants (GAs) in the genomics workforce, their training needs and how to best prepare GAs for their role have not been well defined. We sought to identify the current educational status of GAs, opinions on their training needs, and attitudes about GA training programs (GATPs). Survey links were emailed to NSGC members, 17 state genetic counseling (GC) professional organizations, and genomic medicine researchers. Respondents (n = 411) included GCs (n = 231) and GAs (n = 136). Like other studies, we found that the GA position is filled by a range of e
