Since trans fatty acids (TFA) might interfere with cell membrane functions, there are reasons to believe that high TFA intakes could affect insulin sensitivity and consequently diabetes risk. It is possible that low amounts of TFA consumed during long time-periods might be clinically relevant. Data from controlled intervention studies investigating the effects of TFA on insulin sensitivity are reviewed. The results show no significant effect of TFA on insulin sensitivity in lean healthy subjects. However, there is some evidence that TFA could impair insulin sensitivity compared to unsaturated

Trans-fatty acids have been hypothesized to be carcinogenic, although there are limited data in humans testing this hypothesis. In this study, we examine the association between trans-fatty acids and colon cancer using data from a case (n = 1,993)-control (n = 2,410) study conducted in Utah, Northern California, and Minnesota. Dietary data were collected using a detailed diet history questionnaire, and nutrient values were generated from the Nutrition Coordinating Center nutrient database. After adjustment for other variables, including age at diagnosis, body size, physical activity, aspirin a

Dietary trans fatty acids (TFA) (mainly 18:1 isomers) have two sources: they are formed during the natural bacterial hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids in ruminants or they come from the industrial hydrogenation of unsaturated vegetable oils. Total trans fatty acids account for 1.3% of total energy intake in France compared to 2-3% in USA. Recent epidemiologic studies and meta-analyses of well-designed controlled trials clearly showed that trans fatty acids are associated with an increase of cardiovascular risk. It seems that TFA from industrial sources are responsible for the deleteriou

Two studies were conducted using male rats to assess the effect of trans fatty acids upon essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency. In the first study 5% corn oil (CO), hydrogenated coconut oil (HCNO) or margarine stock (MS, partially hydrogenated soybean oil) were fed, and the levels of trans fatty acids in tissue lipids were measured. The trans fatty acids present in MS were found to intensify EFA deficiency and to be retained in tissue lipids to a high degree, especially in heart phospholipids (PL). In the second study, as the level of trans fatty acids increased in the diet, increasingly high

Dietary trans double bond containing fatty acids have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. There are two main sources of dietary trans fatty acids: meat and dairy fats, and partially hydrogenated fats. Because of a number of factors, including changes in federal labeling requirements for packaged foods, and local bans and grassroots pressure on the use of partially hydrogenated fat, trans fat intake has declined in recent years. Similar to saturated fatty acids, trans fatty acids increase plasma low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol concentrations. In contrast to

Trans fatty acids (TFAs), present in certain processed foods and ruminant products, remain a source of dietary exposure despite global reductions in industrial TFAs (iTFAs). Their relevance during pregnancy is of particular interest because the quality and composition of maternal dietary fats can influence placental function, vascular adaptation, and fetal growth. This review was based on the hypothesis that maternal exposure to specific industrial trans-18:1 isomers is associated with increased risk of pregnancy complications. We systematically evaluated evidence linking individual TFA isomer

As colorectal cancer (CRC) is largely due to modifiable lifestyle habits, the awareness on its risk factors is highly important. Dietary fatty acids have been linked to CRC risk. We explored the association between dietary trans fatty acids (TFAs) intake and CRC risk. We analyzed 865 CRC cases (434 in colon and 404 in rectum) and 3206 controls of the IROPICAN study, with data collected by trained interviewers using validated questionnaires. TFAs intake (industrial and ruminant types) was categorized into quartiles. Multivariate logistic regression models were built to calculate the odds ratios

Trans fatty acids (TFAs) are thought to affect reproductive health by causing adverse effects on sperm morphology and ovum quality as a result of changing membrane lipid composition which, in turn, leads to impairment in metabolic pathways. This literature review examines the evidence for the effects of dietary TFAs on male and female infertility. Studies conducted between 2007 and 2017 on the effect of dietary TFAs on human reproductive health and fetal life have been included. They indicate that TFA intakes are inversely proportional to sperm concentration and total sperm count and exhibit a

Trans isomers of unsaturated fatty acids are absorbed from the diet, due to their presence in diary fat and hydrogenated vegetable oils, and health concern has risen due to their effects on lipid risk factors in cardiovascular diseases. On the basis of the efficiency of the thiyl-radical-catalyzed cis/trans isomerization in vitro and the presence of many sulfur-containing compounds in the cell, the aim of this study was to demonstrate that trans geometry of lipid double bonds can be endogenously generated within membrane phospholipids. The study reports trans fatty acids occurrence in tissue a

Dietary trans-fats are strongly associated with heart disease. However, the capacity for the tissues of the body, and specifically the heart, to take up trans-fats is unknown. It is also unknown if different trans-fats have different uptake capacities in the heart and other tissues of the body. Diets of low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient mice were supplemented for 14weeks with foods that contained 1.5% of the trans-fat elaidic acid or vaccenic acid. Tissues were extracted and frozen in liquid nitrogen, and then lipids were analyzed by gas chromatography for fatty acid content. Isolated

Trans fatty acids (TFA) are minor lipid components present in different foods, including ruminant derived products, which have received great attention due to their relationship with cardiovascular disease risk. The origin of TFA in food is mainly related to the industrial hydrogenation processes of unsaturated vegetable oils, but they can also occur naturally in the digestive tract of ruminants by enzymatic biohydrogenation reactions. Both mechanisms generate similar TFA compounds. However, TFA consumption may exert different biological effects depending on the isomeric distribution, which is

BACKGROUND: Nutritional choices, which include the source of dietary fatty acids (FA), have an important significant impact on coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to determine on patients with CAD the relationships between Trans fatty acids (Trans FA) and different CAD associated parameters such as inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters in addition to Gensini score as a vascular severity index.
METHODS: Fatty acid profiles were established by gas chromatography from 111 CAD patients compared to 120 age-matched control group. Lipid peroxidation biomarkers, oxidative stress, inflammat

Long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) and thiazolidinediones are potent activators of differentiation of preadipose cells. These adipogenic effects are, at least in part, mediated by nuclear receptors of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) subfamily. This report describes the effects of these agents on the differentiation pathway of myoblasts. Exposure of C2C12 myoblasts to LCFA or thiazolidinediones prevents the formation of multinucleated myotubes and the expression of specific muscle markers, leading in parallel to the expression of a typical adipose differentiation program. Simil

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dietary guidelines recommend limiting trans fatty acid (TFA) intake to avoid adverse health effects. However, the impact of TFA intake in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the levels of TFAs in plasma and erythrocyte membrane lipids of young diabetic patients and healthy controls.
METHODS: Data were re-analyzed from three case-control studies including diabetic children (n = 40, mean age: 12.0 years), diabetic young adults (n = 34, mean age: 21.8 years), and children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA, n = 9, m

Epidemiological studies have shown a strong direct (positive) association between the intake of trans fatty acids (TFA) and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), primarily accounted for by industrially produced TFA (IP-TFA). However, comparisons between ruminant TFA (R-TFA) and IP-TFA and risk of CHD have been based on quintiles of intake, which implies that the associations between the two sources of TFA and the risk of CHD were described across different ranges of intake. Controlled metabolic studies of the effect of intake of total and specific R-TFA on CHD risk factors are warranted. M

PURPOSE: The rising prevalence of food allergy (FA) has prompted investigations into dietary factors such as trans fatty acids (TFAs). While ruminant TFAs may protect against allergies, the role of industrial TFAs remains unclear. This study evaluated the effects of industrial TFAs on FA in a murine model.
METHODS: 20 Balb/c mice were divided into 4 groups: control (standard diet), OVA (ovalbumin-sensitized, standard diet), TFAs (industrial TFA-enriched diet), and TFAs+OVA (TFA diet + OVA sensitization). After two weeks, OVA and TFAs+OVA groups underwent OVA sensitization/challenge. Symptoms
