Toxoplasma gondii in rodents and shrews in Armenia, Transcaucasia.

Toxoplasma gondii infections in small mammals are important because they serve as source of infection for the felids who excrete environmentally resistant oocysts in their feces. Here, the authors sought evidence for T. gondii infection in shrews and rodents in Armenia for the first time. Toxoplasma gondii DNA was detected in tissues of trapped animals using a specific PCR targeting gene with a non-coding fragment length of 529 bp. Toxoplasma gondii DNA was detected in 15 out of 137 (10.9%) samples from small mammals from 6 different localities of Armenia for the first time.

[Patterns in the distribution of visceral leishmaniasis in Transcaucasia].

The paper considers the regularities of the spreading of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and present state of its foci in the Transcaucasia, where sporadic cases of the disease occur now in some regions of the Georgian and Azerbaijan SSRs, which is associated with the natural foci. The number of Phlebotomus kandelakii, Ph. transcaucasicus, Ph. balcanicus, Ph. brevis--the most probable vectors of the VL causative agents--is still rather high at the foot of the Great Caucasus, in the Ararat valley, in some regions of the Georgian SSR to the south of Tbilisi and some other regions with natural foci o

[Antibiotic sensitivity of strains of the plague microbe isolated from foci in the Caucasus and Transcaucasia].

Antibiotic sensitivity of 91 strains of the plague microbe isolated in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Daghestan, Georgia, Kabardino-Balkaria and the Stavropol region in 1977-1979 from the rodents and their ectoparasites was studied with the method of serial dilutions in the Hottinger agar. The following antibiotics were tested: streptomycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, methicillin, gentamicin, levomycetin, monomycin, lincomycin, ristomycin, rifampicin, kanamycin, doxycyclin and polymyxin M. All of the strains irrespective of their nature were resistant to methicillin, erythromycin, lincomycin, ristomyci

Yersinia pestis strains isolated in natural plague foci of Caucasus and Transcaucasia in the context of the global evolution of species.

BACKGROUND: Plague is a highly dangerous vector-borne infectious disease that has left a significant mark on history of humankind. There are 13 natural plague foci in the Caucasus, located on the territory of the Russian Federation, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. We performed whole-genome sequencing of Y. pestis strains, isolated in the natural foci of the Caucasus and Transcaucasia. Using the data of whole-genome SNP analysis and Bayesian phylogeny methods, we carried out an evolutionary-phylogeographic analysis of modern population of the plague pathogen in order to determine the phylogene

Epidemiology and Control of Leishmaniasis in the Former USSR: A Review Article.

BACKGROUND: All types of the Old World's leishmaniasis were endemic on the territory of the South regions of ex-USSR. Epidemiological situation was well under control during the USSR era, due to implementation of complex anti-leismaniasis measures. These interventions were dramatically stopped as a result of the collapse of the USSR. METHODS: Most relevant publications on epidemiology and control of leishmaniases in the Republics of Central Asia and Transcaucasia of the ex-USSR were screened. RESULTS: Within the endemic area, the foci of different kinds of leishmaniasis are often overlapped

Tick-borne pathogens in golden jackals (Canis aureus) from Armenia.

BACKGROUND: Golden jackals (Canis aureus) are expanding their range across Europe and Western Asia, frequently inhabiting agricultural and peri-urban areas where they interface with humans and domestic animals. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess their potential role as reservoirs for tick-borne pathogens in Armenia, Transcaucasia. METHODS: Between August 2024 and March 2026, blood samples were collected from 77 golden jackals across six administrative regions of Armenia (Lori, Tavush, Armavir, Ararat, Vayots Dzor, and Syunik). PCR followed by reverse line blot (RLB) hybridization w

[Visceral leishmaniasis in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS): results and basic lines of further study].

The results of studies of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) made in the 20th century in the Commonwealth of Independent States that are VL-endemic, such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrghyzstan, Tadjikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are summed up. The magnitude of studies of VL in different regions is different. The authors analyze the epidemiological and epizootological situation and define the basic lines of further studies of VL, which include the present view of the prevalence of VL in Central Asia and Transcaucasia; identification of strains of the pathogen by molecular gene

[Study of trimethoprim sensitivity in strains of Yersinia pestis isolated from various natural foci of plague].

The effect of exogenic addition of purines and pyrimidines on trimethoprim sensitivity was studied in 134 vaccinal and virulent strains of the plague causative agent isolated at various periods in 12 natural plague foci. 74 strains proved to be sensitive to low concentrations of trimethoprim in the cultivation media irrespective of the presence or absence of thymine or thymidine in them. In this respect the strains differed from many other bacterial species which in the presence of thymidine or thymine were resistant to high concentrations of trimethoprim. 60 natural arginine deficient strains

Epidemiology of Taenia saginata taeniosis/cysticercosis: a systematic review of the distribution in central and western Asia and the Caucasus.

BACKGROUND: The zoonotic parasite Taenia saginata transmits between humans, the definitive host (causing taeniosis), and bovines as the intermediate host (causing cysticercosis). Central and western Asia and the Caucasus have large cattle populations and beef consumption is widespread. However, an overview of the extent of human T. saginata infection and bovine cysticercosis is lacking. This review aims to summarize the distribution of T. saginata in this region. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted, that gathered published and grey literature, and official data concerning T. saginata t

[The anthropogenic transformation of natural foci of leptospirosis].

The problems connected with epizootic consequences of the anthropogenic transformation of the landscape with respect to leptospirosis are discussed. The conclusion on changes produced by hydromelioration in the terrain, specific and etiological features of natural foci is made. Irrigation farming facilitates the formation and spread of natural foci, while drainage of a humid territory leads to the localization and suppression of such foci.

Attitudes of parents of children with rare neurological disorders towards clinical genetic testing.

To study attitudes among parents of probands with rare pediatric-onset neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders on Clinical Genetic Testing (CGT). We administered an 8-item direct structured questionnaire comprising statements regarding attitudes on CGT to 101 consenting parents of probands enrolled in the University College London (UCL) Central Asia and Transcaucasia Disease Diversity Project. The probands comprised pediatric-onset diseases that included cerebral palsy, epilepsy, severe physical, language, and intellectual developmental delays, and autism spectrum symptoms in children wi

Retrospective analysis of dissemination of the 2.MED1 phylogenetic branch of Yersinia pestis in the Caucasus.

The 2.MED1 phylogenetic branch of Yersinia pestis of the medieval biovar became widespread in the Caspian Sea region, the Caucasus, and the Northern Aral Sea region in the 20th century, causing outbreaks and epizootics of plague there. Some of the formed natural foci of 2.MED1 still show epizootic activity and retain their epidemic potential. In this work, we carried out a phylogenetic analysis of 46 Y. pestis strains of the medieval biovar isolated in the Caucasus, the Caspian Sea, and the Northern Aral Sea regions during epidemic outbreaks and epizootics from 1922-2014. The obtained phylogen

Small intestinal flukes of the genus Metagonimus (Digenea: Heterophyidae) in Europe and the Middle East: A review of parasites with zoonotic potential.

The heterophyid trematode Metagonimus romanicus (Ciurea, 1915) (Digenea) is redescribed on the basis of type material from domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) in Romania, vouchers from experimentally infected cats (Felis catus) and adults recovered from golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) infected with metacercariae from scales of chub (Squalius cephalus) and common nase (Chondrostoma nasus) (Cypriniformes: Leuciscidae) in Hungary. This trematode, endemic to Europe and neighbouring regions (northwestern Türkiye), was previously misidentified as M. yokogawai (Katsurada, 1912), a zoonotic parasi

Synopsis of gastropod-associated nematodes of Ciscaucasia (Russian Federation) with the description of a new species of Pellioditis Dougherty, 1953 (syn. Phasmarhabditis Andrássy, 1976).

Caucasus is known as one of the few biodiversity hotspots in Europe and is characterised by rich gastropod fauna while the nematode fauna in association with gastropods has remained largely understudied. Surveys conducted in 2019 and 2021 in the North Caucasus of the Russian Federation (Stavropol Upland and western and central parts of Krasnodar Krai) has revealed the presence of three new species of Pellioditis, a facultative parasite of land gastropods, and two species of obligate parasites, the intestinal parasite Angiostoma kimmeriense and a new, still undescribed species of a larval ectop

[Efficacy of laboratory methods of diagnostic of purulent bacterial meningitis.].

According to the World Health Organization, every year about 1 million cases of purulent bacterial meningitis (PBM) are registered in the world, of which 200 thousand cases end in death. Bacterial meningitis is polyethiologic, which makes the task of determining the pathogen the main in the organization of epidemiological surveillance, treatment regimens, planning of preventive and anti-epidemic measures. The quality of laboratory diagnostics has a key influence on this. The true incidence of meningitis of different etiology can be altered at low-efficiency laboratory diagnostics. This work wa
