Transcultural nursing is a discipline that emphasizes culturally competent care for diverse populations, recognizing the influence of culture on health beliefs, values, practices, and outcomes. It requires nurses to respect cultural differences and similarities, but faces challenges in curriculum design, faculty development, and student assessment. This paper explores transcultural nursing education's current state and future directions, addressing the American Association of Colleges of Nursing essentials for integrating cultural content into nursing curricula, reviewing Madeleine Leininger's

Regardless of where they live or under what circumstances, mothers throughout the world seem to have a compelling desire to provide the best possible health care for their children (Huston, 1979). Haitian mothers living in the Dominican Republic were no exception. The health beliefs and practices of these mothers related primarily to diarrhea among their children which demonstrated a concern and resourcefulness that is commendable. The results of this study clearly indicate the importance of transcultural nurses conducting culturally relevant research as a basis to develop sound health program

The concepts of culture and homelessness are both complex and contested. This paper examines homelessness through the lens of transcultural nursing theory, increasing understanding of both homelessness and transcultural theory. We argue that homelessness can be usefully conceptualised as a culture and that the application of transcultural theory to caring for homeless people will add further to the utility of these theories. The application of transcultural theory can add to the repertoire of skills the nurse needs to care for not only homeless clients, but, for a diverse range of client group

In sum, elderly Mexican Americans residing in an urban area were identified as a population at high risk for chronic conditions associated with age and were also at risk for health problems related to migrant status, poverty-level incomes, and low levels of education and nutrition. They are in need of care, i.e. assistance, succorance, nurturance, stress alleviation, and support in a stressful urban environment in which they encounter barriers of language, transportation, eligibility requirements, and self-perceptions of inferior ethnic identify. The family and kin groups are most important bu

Nurses play a pivotal role in supporting patients during the dying process. A transcultural perspective is crucial to provide individualized, respectful care that addresses cultural beliefs, values, and practices. Despite growing attention to cultural competence in palliative care, little is known about how nurses integrate these dimensions in daily practice. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of palliative and oncology nurses regarding culturally sensitive end-of-life care. A phenomenological qualitative design was employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6 oncology n

(1) Background: This article addresses the harmful traditional practice of breast ironing, which primarily affects girls and adolescents in several countries, particularly in Cameroon. The practice involves applying heat and pressure to developing breasts to delay their growth, with the goal of protecting girls from sexual abuse, early pregnancy, and forced marriages. While culturally accepted, breast ironing has severe physical, psychological, and social consequences, including damage to mammary glands, pain, infections, and potential long-term health complications. (2) Methods: A reflective

INTRODUCTION: Cultural competence is crucial in nursing education, with nurse educators playing a key role. However, limited research has explored factors influencing their cultural competence.
OBJECTIVES: This study has two aims: to assess cultural competence levels and transcultural teaching behaviors among academic nurse educators and to explore the factors influencing these cultural competencies through both quantitative and qualitative analyses.
METHODS: A convergent mixed-method design was used. A convenience sample of 45 nurse educators in a Saudi college completed the Cultural Divers

Power relations in care are the link between patients and nurses regarding communication and the ability to act in this context. It can be affected when there is cultural interference between members, putting mutual understanding at risk in healthcare situations. This study analyses power relations in healthcare situations between older Norwegian patients and Spanish migrant nurses regarding active listening, shared decision-making, and patient participation. We performed a hermeneutical study endorsed in critical discourse studies framework from a transcultural perspective. A purposive sampli

Research-based fact sheets are simple, clear, and concise one-page reviews of a topic (e.g., culture and ethnicity, homelessness) with tips to improve culturally competent care. Using research helps nurses achieve promotion, advance careers, and enhance patient care. The background, literature, purpose, methods, and evaluation of fact sheets are reported. In a survey, 142 nurses reported that the fact sheets about general topics (end of life, depression, heart failure, smoking cessation, ethnicity, homelessness, hypertension, conflict management, medication safety, and pressure ulcers) were 99

The purpose of this paper is to review the research on the relationships among ethnicity, culture, neuropsychiatric diagnosis, and treatment. Psychiatric nurses provide care to an ethnically and culturally diverse group of clients. Knowledge of ethnic and cultural differences are essential to diagnosis and treatment. Ethnic diversity affects psychiatric diagnosis. Cross-ethnic differences in genetics, diet, environmental exposure, and fetal, childhood, and adolescent development may result in varied experiences of psychiatric illness among ethnic groups. Ethnic diversity also affects psychiatr

Faculty members in nursing schools have the responsibility to provide learning experiences for students that have the potential to solidly link indicators of professional richness, knowledge gained about diversity, enhanced critical thinking skills, ethical reasoning and decision-making. The challenge then is for faculty members to implement systematic methods to ensure that students are exposed to in- and out-of classroom experiences that result in measurable outcomes indicating a strong association between what a student is expected to learn and the diversity knowledge gained. The purpose of

In this paper, how cultural care may be operationalized in clinical nursing practice in Taiwan is examined by integrating the Giger-Davidhizar transcultural assessment model with the Narayan cultural assessment framework, with Leininger's Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality serving as the central theoretical framework. Using a case exemplar (a Taiwanese woman living with type 2 diabetes), we examine the influence on health behaviors and treatment decisions of multiple cultural factors, including education, economic conditions, politico-legal context, biological characteristics,

Midwives need to understand the restrictions that Shabbos (the Sabbath) and other Jewish Feasts place on a woman while she is in hospital. Jewish women usually decline alphafetoprotein (AFP) or Triple tests and would not wish to terminate a pregnancy for abnormality. However, most will take up the offer of an ultrasound scan. The husband may not support his wife physically during labour. Most Jewish women retire to bed for the 'lying-in' period of ten days, resting and establishing feeding. Most Jewish women breastfeed, and failure to do this is often kept secret. Contraception is generally no

Patients undergoing stoma surgery will more readily adapt to their new body image and way of life if they receive professional and voluntary input from the ostomy agencies such as the British Colostomy Association, from the preoperative stage through to rehabilitation and their return to the community. Nursing has moved away from mechanistic, task-oriented care to holistic care and, apart from the physical changes that a stoma will cause, there are other areas to be considered to improve the patient's quality of life after surgery. Patients undergoing stoma surgery experience a profound threat

NIV (noninvasive ventilation) is becoming more popular as a first-line treatment for older patients with lung cancer who are experiencing acute respiratory failure. In the ICU, older age is linked to worse results with mechanical breathing. When dealing with severely sick patients, noninvasive ventilation is beneficial. Due to the risk of NIV failure and the higher mortality induced by delayed intubation, it is difficult to apply to older patients, especially those with lung cancer and respiratory insufficiency. As a result, for a successful outcome, nurse interventions should be provided to p
