Guidelines for Reprocessing Ultrasound Transducers: 2026.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound equipment is recognised as a potential source of harmful microorganisms which could lead to clinical infection. This highlights the importance of standardised infection prevention and control strategies for ultrasound practice across Australia and New Zealand. This revised guideline supersedes the similarly named 2017 guideline and was collaboratively developed by the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) and the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control (ACIPC). METHODS: A multidisciplinary working group was assembled consisting of ul

Bimorph Lithium Niobate Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers.

Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs) are widely utilized in applications that demand mechanical resilience, thermal stability, and compact form factors. Recent efforts have sought to demonstrate that single-crystal lithium niobate (LN) is a promising PMUT material platform, offering high electromechanical coupling ( $\textit {k}^{{2}}$ ) and bidirectional performance. In addition, advances in LN film transfer technology have enabled high-quality periodically poled piezoelectric films (P3F), facilitating a bimorph piezoelectric stack without intermediate electrodes. Use of High-Frequency Transducers in Breast Sonography.

Sonography companies have recently developed high-frequency transducers (20-30 MHz) to image the skin and small joints. In this pictorial review, we present a number of settings where these probes can be usefully employed to scan the breast. These include skin abnormalities of the breast and axilla; nipple-areolar complex abnormalities; superficial breast parenchyma abnormalities; breast parenchyma abnormalities in subjects with implants; very small female breasts; peripheral areas in breasts of any size; pre-puberal breasts; male breasts; post-mastectomy chest wall; and intraoperative breast

[Breast sonography with high-frequency short-focusing transducers].

Since 1984 two high-frequency short-focussed linear transducers have been used for breast sonography at Innsbruck University Gynaecological Clinic. In the study reported here 121 patients with pathologic change in the breast were examined. A significant improvement in diagnosis was achieved: on the one hand because of the improved resolution and distinction of the lesions, and on the other because of the manageability of the transducers and the individually adjustable breast compression. Both perforation of the physiological mammary strata as well as clearly distinguishable tumor ends without

Recent Advances in Transducers for Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) Imaging.

As a well-known medical imaging methodology, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging plays a critical role in diagnosis, treatment guidance and post-treatment assessment of coronary artery diseases. By cannulating a miniature ultrasound transducer mounted catheter into an artery, the vessel lumen opening, vessel wall morphology and other associated blood and vessel properties can be precisely assessed in IVUS imaging. Ultrasound transducer, as the key component of an IVUS system, is critical in determining the IVUS imaging performance. In recent years, a wide range of achievements in ultrasoun

Assessment of Head Tremor with Accelerometers Versus Gyroscopic Transducers.

BACKGROUND: Accelerometers and gyroscopes are used commonly in the assessment of hand tremor, but their validity in the assessment of head tremor has not been studied. We hypothesized that gyroscopy would be superior to accelerometry because head tremor is rotational motion, and gyroscopes record rotational motion, free of gravitational artifact. We also hypothesized a strong logarithmic relationship between 0 to 4-point tremor ratings and the transducer measures of tremor amplitude, similar to those previously reported for hand tremor. METHODS: Head tremor was recorded for 1 minute in each o

Endocavity Ultrasound Transducers: Why High-Level Disinfection Is Necessary.

As a medical imaging modality, ultrasound is used by a wide cross-section of practitioners including radiologists, obstetricians, gynecologists, gastroenterologists, urologists and cardiologists. The increasing popularity of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool is due not only to the ease of use and portability of systems, but also to the perceived safety aspect of the examination. This latter point needs to be examined. As with any reusable medical device, the ultrasound transducer, also known as a probe, could potentially be a vector for the transmission of pathogenic viruses and fungi between pa

Intravascular forward-looking ultrasound transducers for microbubble-mediated sonothrombolysis.

Effective removal or dissolution of large blood clots remains a challenge in clinical treatment of acute thrombo-occlusive diseases. Here we report the development of an intravascular microbubble-mediated sonothrombolysis device for improving thrombolytic rate and thus minimizing the required dose of thrombolytic drugs. We hypothesize that a sub-megahertz, forward-looking ultrasound transducer with an integrated microbubble injection tube is more advantageous for efficient thrombolysis by enhancing cavitation-induced microstreaming than the conventional high-frequency, side-looking, catheter-m

Improved ultrasound image detail using wide aperture, focused transducers.

Image resolution of anatomic parts located 3--4 cm below the skin surface can be improved with current digital B-scanners and a large aperture, high frequency, focused transducer. Such a transducer that has a very sharp focus over a limited depth of focus is described. The width of the field of view is unlimited, and image detail approaches that obtained with specialized real time scanners, although performance of the examination may not be as convenient or rapid. Examples of improved resolution are given for the thyroid, carotid artery, infant pancreas, ovary, and placenta.

Air-coupled MUMPs capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers with resonant cavities.

This work reports performance improvements of air-coupled capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) using resonant cavities. In order to perform this work, we have designed and manufactured a CMUT employing multi-user microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) processes (MUMPs). The transducer was designed using Helmholtz resonator principles. This was characterised by the dimensions of the cavity and several acoustic ports, which had the form of holes in the CMUT plate. The MUMPs process has the advantage of being low cost which allows the manufacture of economic prototypes. In this

Sonographically guided laparoscopy and mediastinoscopy using miniature catheter-based transducers.

Miniature ultrasound transducers (12.5 MHz) housed in 9 Fr catheters were passed through a laparoscope or mediastinoscope to image a variety of normal and abnormal structures within the peritoneal cavity and mediastinum in 20 patients. These transducers made it possible to visualize the gallbladder and bile ducts and evaluate for the presence of stones, to detect masses and provide guidance for their aspiration or biopsy, and to image the internal structures of the ovary and fallopian tube. In addition, these miniature transducers were used to locate such normal vital structures as blood vesse

Percutaneous vs. transcutaneous transducers for hearing by direct bone conduction.

There is a substantial need for improvement of the hearing situation for patients, with chronic middle ear or ear canal disorders. To improve hearing for these patients, two different bone conduction hearing systems have been developed. The Nobelpharma Auditory System HC 200-the bone-anchored hearing aid we present here-uses a percutaneous transducer; whereas the Audiant device, developed by Dr. Jack Hough, uses a transcutaneous transducer. In percutaneous transmission, the transducer is directly coupled to the bone by means of a permanent skin penetration, whereas in transcutaneous transmissi

Extraordinary acoustic transmission and enhanced focusing by metasurface ultrasonic transducers.

To realize the synergistic optimization of energy transfer efficiency and spatial control accuracy in high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy, an extraordinary acoustic transmission (EAT) and enhanced focusing by metasurface ultrasonic transducer (EAFT) is proposed. By coupling a piezoelectric element with a sub-wavelength grooved lens designed based on Wood's anomaly and Fabry-Pérot resonance, the device achieves precise wavefront modulation. Compared with conventional acoustic focused transducers (CAFT), the proposed design enhances the peak focal pressure by 33%, improves the elect

Theoretical modeling and modal analysis of multi-element coupled transducers.

Low-frequency transducers are considerably smaller than the wavelength. When multiple low-frequency transducers are closely packed, they couple with the surrounding water and form a transducer-water-transducer coupling structure called multi-element coupled transducers (MCT). This study presents a theoretical model of the MCT based on radiation and mutual radiation theory and analyzes it under multiple resonance frequencies and vibration modes. The MCT comprising N single-degree-of-freedom elements possesses N resonance frequencies and corresponding vibration modes, and the resonance frequency

Fixation of Ultrasound Transducers for Spinal Cord Neuromodulation in Mice.

Focused ultrasound (FUS) has emerged as an innovative non-invasive neuromodulation technology demonstrating significant potential for spinal cord neural regulation. However, achieving stable transducer fixation along the spinal column presents notable technical challenges. Existing immobilization methods often require prolonged animal anesthesia or demonstrate inadequate adhesion reliability. These critical constraints underscore the urgent need for developing a novel fixation paradigm that ensures both operational stability and physiological compatibility. This protocol introduces an innovati

Modeling and Simulation of Graphene-Based Transducers in NEMS Accelerometers.

The mechanical characteristics of graphene ribbons with an attached proof mass that can be used as NEMS transducers have been minimally studied, which hinders the development of graphene-based NEMS devices. Here, we simulated the mechanical characteristics of graphene ribbons with an attached proof mass using the finite element method. We studied the impact of force, residual stress, and geometrical size on displacement, strain, resonant frequency, and fracture strength of graphene ribbons with an attached proof mass. The results show that the increase of width and thickness of graphene ribbon

Biomechanical assessment of the aortic root using novel force transducers.

In recent years the use of valve sparing techniques has become more common in selected patients with aortic valve insufficiency. However, limited experimental research has been performed to document the biomechanical effect of these techniques. One experimental platform is to evaluate how the normal physiological aortic root forces are altered or re-established after the surgical intervention. Hence, the aim of this project was to develop new implantable force transducers for a biomechanical description of various aortic root repair techniques. Two novel force transducers were developed. Both

Evaluating elongated grains with diffuse ultrasonic double scattering and rectangular transducers.

Diffuse scattering of ultrasound by the microstructure of polycrystal specimens can be used to evaluate grain size and grain elongation. The existing diffuse scattering models mostly dealt with circular transducers whose symmetrical sound field is insensitive to the asymmetric elongated grain. The sound field of a rectangular transducer provides a new perspective for acquiring additional information. First, the existing single scattering response (SSR) and double scattering response (DSR) models are modified for a rectangular transducer, where the sound field of a rectangular transducer is equ
