Researchers' perspectives on the use of material transfer agreements in biobanking research; a case of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The increase in sharing of human biological materials and associated data in collaborative research underpins the need for robust regulatory frameworks. This study explored researchers' perspectives on the use of material transfer agreements in biobanking research. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted among researchers at two research institutions in Uganda. Fourteen researchers were purposively selected to participate in key informant interviews. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. NVivo 12 software was used to organize the data. RESULTS: Four themes we

Access by Design, Benefits if Convenient: A Closer Look at the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework's Standard Material Transfer Agreements.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Securing access to pathogen samples for research purposes is crucial for pandemic preparedness and responding to infectious disease outbreaks. The Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework (PIP Framework) is the only pathogen-specific international access and benefit-sharing (ABS) instrument. This analysis reveals that during an influenza pandemic, the PIP Framework will safeguard access to virus samples but may not be as effective in delivering the associated benefits, like vaccines and antivirals, to countries in need. The PIP Framework's deficiencies must be addres

Service user involvement in risk assessment and management: the Transition Inventory.

BACKGROUND: Drawing on self-prediction theory and the positive benefits of increasing health service user participation in risk assessments, the Transition Inventory (TI) was developed. It is an aid to the assessment of areas that people anticipate will be of difficulty in the next stage of transition, for example from open hospital to the community. AIMS: The aim of this paper is to determine reliability and convergent/discriminant validity data for the TI and its subscales, including behavioral impulsivity, social pressure, substance misuse, financial/employment, leisure, negative affect, i

Variability in transfer criteria for patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm in the western United States.

BACKGROUND: No standards exist for interhospital transfer of patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA). As such, many facilities have developed individual approaches to transfer of these patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate areas of agreement and discord for transfer and to determine if current practices may serve as a starting point for developing universal transfer guidelines. METHODS: A survey was prepared regarding requirements for transfer, factors regarding transport, and available resources at the accepting hospital. The survey was then offered to member

Validation of a stall-side immunoglobulin assay for use in equine reproductive management.

BACKGROUND: Equine foals receive IgG from mare colostrum through passive transfer. Failure of passive transfer (FPT) is a significant risk to the foal's life, leaving them vulnerable to infection and sepsis. Radial Immunodiffusion (RID) and immunoturbidimetric assays quantify IgG present in a foal sample but require a laboratory to complete. Accurate, reproducible, stall-side testing to rapidly quantify IgG would allow for expedited clinical decisions, with potential to improve equine foal care and survival. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the analytical and clinical performance of a stall-side IgG l

Transferability of metabolic balance studies in short bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic balance studies (MBS) are the gold standard method to assess the intestinal absorptive function in patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS). During a full MBS, patients are admitted to the hospital to collect duplicates of all ingested foods and drinks, as well as their fecal and urinary output, typically over a 72-h period. These collections are further processed to assess absorption of energy, macronutrients (nitrogen, fat and carbohydrate) and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium). Full MBS require dedicated laboratory personnel, equipment, knowledge

Large Language Model Summarization of Physician-to-Physician Calls for Interhospital Transfer of Patients With ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Interhospital transfer of patients with suspected ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) requires timely and robust communication. Clinical uptake of potentially useful information from physician-to-physician phone calls authorizing transfer is low at many institutions, at least in part due to relative inaccessibility of call audio and lack of transcripts or summaries. Large language models (LLMs) can transform text into brief, consistently formatted summaries that could be made available in the electronic health record, thus facilitating the timely availability of clinically r

The sensitivity of PM2.5 source-receptor relationships to atmospheric chemistry and transport in a three-dimensional air quality model.

Air quality model simulations constitute an effective approach to developing source-receptor relationships (so-called transfer coefficients in the risk analysis framework) because a significant fraction of particulate matter (particularly PM2.5) is secondary (i.e., formed in the atmosphere) and, therefore, depends on the atmospheric chemistry of the airshed. In this study, we have used a comprehensive three-dimensional air quality model for PM2.5 (SAQM-AERO) to compare three approaches to generating episodic transfer coefficients for several source regions in the Los Angeles Basin. First, tran

Transitional Care and Adherence of Adolescents and Young Adults After Kidney Transplantation in Germany and Austria: A Binational Observatory Census Within the TRANSNephro Trial.

Transition from child to adult-oriented care is widely regarded a challenging period for young people with kidney transplants and is associated with a high risk of graft failure. We analyzed the existing transition structures in Germany and Austria using a questionnaire and retrospective data of 119 patients transferred in 2011 to 2012. Most centers (73%) confirmed agreements on the transition procedure. Patients' age at transfer was subject to regulation in 73% (18 years). Median age at transition was 18.3 years (16.5-36.7). Median serum creatinine increased from 123 to 132 μmol/L over the 12

EXTROS (EXtensor Repair & Transfer Outcome Score): Validation of a unified, percentage-based metric for extensor tendon repairs and transfers.

BACKGROUND: Outcome reporting for extensor tendon surgery is fragmented. Legacy systems-Miller for repairs and Bincaz for transfers-use different success definitions, limiting comparison. Building on the composite framework proposed by Jerome et al. (wrist arc, forearm rotation, MCP extension/flexion, first-web opening, grip/pinch; all normalized to the contralateral side), we adopted this construct as the EXTensor Repair & Transfer Outcome Score (EXTROS) and validated its measurement properties across repairs and transfers. METHODS: EXTROS summarizes domain percentages into an overall grade:

Vibrational energy transfer of free OH groups at the air/water interface via neural network-based molecular dynamics simulations.

By integrating neural network-based molecular dynamics simulations with the mixed quantum/classical method, we investigate the vibrational energy transfer pathways of interfacial free OH groups. Systematic analysis reveals distinct time scales associated with different energy transfer mechanisms. The results indicate that the intramolecular channel dominates overall energy relaxation and acts as the primary pathway, with the reorientation mechanism serving as a secondary contributor. In comparison, intermolecular transfer and Fermi resonance govern considerably slower dynamics processes. Conse
