Aligned Bacterial Cellulose through Organohydrogel Transformation.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) possesses exceptional intrinsic mechanical properties at the nanoscale; however, translating these properties to the macroscopic level remains challenging due to its disordered nanofibrillar network. While mechanical stretching can induce nanofibrillar alignment within BC hydrogel, conventional techniques often cause structural damage, limiting both stretchability and achievable mechanical properties. To address this issue, we introduce a simple, one-step method by developing a BC organohydrogel via glycerol infusion into the BC network. This transformation significant

Bacterial catalytic processes for transformation of metals.

Microorganisms actively participate in the transformation of metals and metalloids by various processes including adsorption, absorption, alkylation, oxidation and reduction reactions. Bacteria of the genera Thiobacillus and Sulfolobus have a chemolithotrophic mode of metabolism and catalyze various metal transformations. These bacteria are primarily involved in oxidation-reduction reactions of metals. Metal sulfides can be either directly oxidized by the microbes or oxidized by ferric iron, an end-product of microbial metabolism. These processes result in solubilization of iron, copper, molyb

Enhanced carbon sequestration in marginal seas through bacterial transformation.

Labile organic carbon is a highly dynamic component of the marine carbon pool, traditionally thought to be respired within hours to days into carbon dioxide (CO2) by bacteria, although there is a paucity of direct observational evidence. Here, we report that a significant portion of labile particulate organic carbon (POC) in marginal seas is converted into bacterial material. By exploiting D/L-amino acids, we trace the origins of labile POC and its transformation into bacterial POC in the marginal seas off Eastern China. Our results indicate that labile POC primarily originates from autochthon

Application of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles for the Bacterial Transformation of (-)-Isopulegol.

Background: The biotransformation of the monoterpenoid (-)-isopulegol by Rhodococcus rhodochrous yields valuable diol and hydroxy acid derivatives; however, the yields are moderate, and formation of the (S)-epoxide byproduct significantly reduces the overall selectivity. Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) can modulate biocatalytic activity; however, their effects on monoterpenoid biotransformation are poorly understood. Methods: We investigated the effects of NiO (50 mg/L) and CuO NPs (5 mg/L) on (-)-isopulegol conversion by R. rhodochrous IEGM 1362. Products were quantified by GC-MS; cellular re

Metal transformation as a strategy for bacterial detoxification of heavy metals.

Microorganisms can modify the chemical and physical characters of metals leading to an alteration in their speciation, mobility, and toxicity. Aqueous heavy metals solutions (Hg, Cd, Pb, Ag, Cu, and Zn) were treated with the volatile metabolic products (VMPs) of Escherichia coli Z3 for 24 h using aerobic bioreactor. The effect of the metals treated with VMPs in comparison to the untreated metals on the growth of E. coli S1 and Staphylococcus aureus S2 (local isolates) was examined. Moreover, the toxic properties of the treated and untreated metals were monitored using minimum inhibitory concen

Bacterial Phospholipid-Inducible Helix-Transformable Antimicrobial Polypeptides.

The helical conformation of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) exerts a dual effect: it enhances bactericidal activity while concurrently increasing cytotoxicity by facilitating penetration into mammalian cells, leading to organelle damage. Herein, we report a bacterial phospholipid-inducible, helix-transformable antimicrobial polypeptide (HT-AMP) for enhancing the antimicrobial selectivity. The HT-AMP, C6-10, which has a charge-to-backbone span of 10 σ-bonds, adopts a moderate intrinsic helicity of 38% due to side-chain charge repulsion. This restrained conformation significantly reduces AMP penet

Influence of organophosphonates as alternative P-sources on bacterial transformation of glyphosate.

Glyphosate biotransformation under phosphorus (P)-limiting conditions has been demonstrated for numerous bacterial strains. However, besides glyphosate bacteria can utilize a broad spectrum of other biogenic and synthetic organophosphorus compounds (e.g., organophosphonates, OPs) as P-sources. The ubiquity of OPs in the environment reduces the likelihood that bacteria will encounter conditions where glyphosate is the only P-containing compound. To study the impact of co-existing OPs on the biotransformation of glyphosate, we conducted batch cultivation experiments with the bacterial strains Ac

How mineral induced antibiotic transformation products impact bacterial growth and denitrification activity.

The abiotic transformations of quinolones and tetracyclines facilitated by redox-active minerals has been studied extensively, however limited information is available regarding the antimicrobial activity and toxicity of their resultant transformation products. In this study, we first investigated the mechanisms underlying the transformation of two commonly used antibiotics, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TC), by the ubiquitous redox soil mineral, birnessite (MnO2). Subsequently, we evaluated the impact of these transformation products on both the growth and activity of the environmenta

Bio-transformation of selenium in Se-enriched bacterial strains of Lactobacillus casei.

BACKGROUND: Selenium is an element of very great importance for the proper functioning of the human body, mainly due to its antioxidant properties. Selenium exhibits a preventive effect in the case of cardiovascular disease, the immune system, male infertility and inhibits the toxic action of other agents. Selenium is important for Hashimoto's disease. Intake of selenium in the diet slows the aging process. The biological and toxicological effects of selenium strongly depend on its chemical form. Some organisms for example: plant, yeast, are capable of metabolizing low bioavailable selenium co

Synthetically designed anti-defense proteins overcome barriers to bacterial transformation and phage infection.

Bacterial defense systems present considerable barriers to both phage infection and plasmid transformation. These systems target mobile genetic elements, limiting the efficacy of bacteriophage-based therapies and restricting genetic engineering applications. Here, we employ a de-novo protein design approach to generate proteins that bind and inhibit bacterial defense systems. We show that our synthetically designed proteins block defense, and that phages engineered to encode the synthetic proteins can replicate in cells that express the respective defense system. We further demonstrate that a

Effects of ibuprofen and its transformation products on algal-bacterial granular sludge system.

Ibuprofen (IBP), a ubiquitous pharmaceutical micropollutant, poses a significant challenge to conventional biological wastewater treatment processes. This study systematically investigated the treatment efficacy and adaptive responses of algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) under IBP-induced stress. During Phase I (0.5-5 mg/L IBP), the ABGS system maintained robust nutrient removal (COD: 81.8 ± 15.1%; NH4+-N: 88.9 ± 11.1%; PO43--P: 84.1 ± 11.6%), exhibiting performance comparable to the non-exposed control. Under an acute 10 mg/L IBP shock during Phase II, the system exhibited strong self-re

A continuous wavelet transform-enhanced transformer model for spectroscopic detection of bacterial wilt in tomato at early infection stages.

INTRODUCTION: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) bacterial wilt is a highly destructive soil-borne disease whose early-stage infections are asymptomatic or visually indistinguishable, limiting the effectiveness of conventional diagnostic methods. METHODS: This study developed a Continuous Wavelet Transform-enhanced Transformer framework (CWT-STNet) for early-stage detection of bacterial wilt using hyperspectral data collected from tomato canopies under controlled inoculation conditions. Infection severity was categorized into grades 0 to 4, with levels 1-2 defined as the early infection stage.

Phase variation of Opa proteins of Neisseria meningitidis and the effects of bacterial transformation.

Opa proteins are major proteins involved in meningococcal colonization of the nasopharynx and immune interactions. Opa proteins undergo phase variation (PV) due to the presence of the 5'-CTCTT-3' coding repeat (CR) sequence. The dynamics of PV of meningococcal Opa proteins is unknown. Opa PV, including the effect of transformation on PV, was assessed using a panel of Opa-deficient strains of Neisseria meningitidis. Analysis of Opa expression from UK disease-causing isolates was undertaken. Different opa genes demonstrated variable rates of PV, between 6.4 × 10(-4) and 6.9 × 10(-3) per cell per

Biofilm battle: New transformative tactics to tackle the bacterial biofilm infections.

Bacterial biofilm infections are the root cause of persistent infections and the prevalence of resistance to specific or multiple antibiotics. Biofilms have unique features that provide a protective environment for bacteria under various stress conditions and contribute significantly to the pathogenesis of chronic infections. They cover bacterial cells with a self-produced extracellular polymeric matrix, effectively hiding the bacterial cells and their targets. Conventional therapies cannot effectively treat and control bacterial biofilm infections. Therefore, advanced therapeutic means like m

Biochemical transformation of bacterial lipopolysaccharides by acyloxyacyl hydrolase reduces host injury and promotes recovery.

Animals can sense the presence of microbes in their tissues and mobilize their own defenses by recognizing and responding to conserved microbial structures (often called microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs)). Successful host defenses may kill the invaders, yet the host animal may fail to restore homeostasis if the stimulatory microbial structures are not silenced. Although mice have many mechanisms for limiting their responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a major Gram-negative bacterial MAMP, a highly conserved host lipase is required to extinguish LPS sensing in tissues and restore h

Halogenated dissolved organic matter regulates bacterial community composition and organic carbon transformation in aquatic ecosystems.

Bacteria-dissolved organic matter (DOM) interactions profoundly influence organic carbon fate along the land-ocean aquatic continuum. Halogenated DOM (H-DOM) is recognized as a widespread component of the DOM pool in natural waters, but its interactions with bacterial communities and ecological functions remain poorly understood. Using non-targeted ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry and amplicon sequencing, we characterized H-DOM, non-halogenated DOM (N-DOM), and bacterial communities across three hydrological seasons in the Minjiang River, the largest mountainous river in southeastern Ch

Chlorine disinfection promotes the exchange of antibiotic resistance genes across bacterial genera by natural transformation.

Chlorine disinfection to drinking water plays an important role in preventing and controlling waterborne disease outbreaks globally. Nevertheless, little is known about why it enriches the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in bacteria after chlorination. Here, ARGs released from killed antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), and culturable chlorine-injured bacteria produced in the chlorination process as the recipient, were investigated to determine their contribution to the horizontal transfer of ARGs during disinfection treatment. We discovered Escherichia coli, Salmonella aberdeen, Pseudomona

Bacterial Autoimmune Drug Metabolism Transforms an Immunomodulator into Structurally and Functionally Divergent Antibiotics.

Tapinarof is a stilbene drug that is used to treat psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, and is thought to function through regulation of the AhR and Nrf2 signaling pathways, which have also been linked to inflammatory bowel diseases. It is produced by the gammaproteobacterial Photorhabdus genus, which thus represents a model to probe tapinarof structural and functional transformations. We show that Photorhabdus transforms tapinarof into novel drug metabolism products that kill inflammatory bacteria, and that a cupin enzyme contributes to the conversion of tapinarof and related dietary stilbenes in
