BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn is characterized by tachypnea and signs of respiratory distress. Transient tachypnea typically appears within the first two hours of life in term and late preterm newborns. Although transient tachypnea of the newborn is usually a self-limited condition, it is associated with wheezing syndromes in late childhood. The rationale for the use of salbutamol (albuterol) for transient tachypnea of the newborn is based on studies showing that β-agonists can accelerate the rate of alveolar fluid clearance. This review was originally published in 2016 and up

BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn results from delayed clearance of lung liquid and is a common cause of admission of full term infants to neonatal intensive care units. The condition is particularly common after elective Caesarean section. Conventional treatment involves appropriate oxygen administration and continuous positive airway pressure in some cases. Most infants receive antibiotic therapy. Hastening the clearance of lung liquid should shorten the duration of the symptoms and reduce complications.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether furosemide reduces the duration of oxygen

Transient tachypnea of the newborn results from delayed clearance of lung fluid and is a common cause of admission of full term and late preterm infants to neonatal intensive care units. The condition is particularly common after elective cesarean section. Conventional treatment involves supplemental oxygen, withholding enteral feeds and administration of intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Rarely, infants require CPAP and mechanical ventilation. Occasionally some babies develop severe hypoxemia and may require high concentrations of oxygen. The most effective strategy for accelerating reabsor

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate surfactant production and function in term neonates with transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN).
STUDY DESIGN: Samples of gastric aspirates collected within 30 minutes of birth from 42 term newborns with gestational age ≥ 37 weeks (21 patients with TTN and 21 control subjects), delivered via elective cesarean delivery, were analyzed with lamellar body count and stable microbubble test.
RESULTS: Results of lamellar body counts and stable microbubble tests were significantly lower in the TTN group than in control subjects (P = .004 and .013, respectively). Lamellar bod

An infant born by cesarean delivery is at risk of having excessive pulmonary fluid which makes predisposition to transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), because fetal thorax compression during labor leads to the loss of large volumes liquid from the lungs. At birth, the pulmonary epithelium switches from predominantly facilitated Cl⁻ secretion to predominantly active Na+ reabsorption with the increase expression epithelial Na+ -channels (ENaC). Diminished activity or immaturity of this process may contribute to the development of TTN. Familial clustering of some TTN cases shows a genetic pre

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between transient tachypnea of the newborn and asthma complicating pregnancy.
DESIGN: Historical cohort analysis. Setting. Singleton live deliveries in New Jersey hospitals during 1989 to 1992 (n = 447 963).
PATIENTS: Mother-infant dyads were identified from linked birth certificate and maternal and infant hospital claims data. Women with an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) diagnosis code (493) for asthma (n = 2289) were compared with a four-fold larger randomly selected control sample (n = 9156)

BACKGROUND: Initiation of empiric antibiotic treatment for possible early-onset sepsis is recommended for late preterm and term neonates with respiratory distress. There is no evidence base to this approach.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of adverse infectious events in neonates with transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) managed with a risk-factor-based restrictive antibiotic use policy.
METHODS: This is a single institution retrospective cohort study of neonates with primary diagnosis of TTN between 2004 and 2010. The relationship between antibiotic exposure and infectious outcom

BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is considered a benign disorder. Given its self-limiting nature, few studies have looked for associated pathology. This study explores the association of TTN with structural cardiac lesions.
METHODS: Over a six-month period, all inborn term and late preterm neonates with TTN (without predisposing factors) underwent 2D echocardiography within the first ten days of life, after tachypnea had subsided. Equal number of neonates born during the same period, matched for birth weight, gestational age, sex, and mode of delivery but without tachypnea

BACKGROUND: This study explored the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound for diagnosing transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN).
METHODS: Ultrasound was performed by one export. Patients were placed in a supine, lateral recumbent, or prone position. The probe was placed perpendicular or parallel to the ribs, and each region of the lung was scanned. The scan results were compared with conventional chest radiographic results.
RESULTS: A total of 1,358 infants were included in this study. We identified 412 cases without pulmonary diseases, 228 TTN cases, 358 respiratory distress syndrome

Transient tachypnea of newborn is associated with hypothyroxinemia in animals via decreased stimulation of beta-adrenergic receptors and Na-K-ATPase activity. In 26 549 term neonates, serum total thyroxine <14 ug/dL, male sex, and elective cesarean delivery were significantly associated with greater risk for transient tachypnea of newborn.

BACKGROUND: One of the most common causes of respiratory distress in newborns is transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). Salbutamol is often suggested to increase the rate of pulmonary fluid absorption in newborns with TTN. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of inhaled salbutamol in TTN management.
METHODS: This double-blind clinical trial was conducted on 52 newborns admitted to the neonatal ICU of Fatemieh Hospital of Hamadan, Iran. The newborns were randomly assigned to 2 groups of equal members: one group received 2 mL of nebulized sodium chloride concentration (control group), a

OBJECTIVE: To identify the obstetrics and neonatal risk factors associated with transient tachypnea of the newborn.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Case-control study of 110 neonates with transient tachypnea and 110 newborns controls, between May and October 2000, in the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Dr. Juan I. Menchaca. The diagnosis of transient tachypnea was done by clinical and radiology data and exclusion of the other causes of respiratory distress. The exposure was documented by a direct interview to the mother and clinical information of the clinical expedient. The association was measured with

BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is a self- limited increase in the work of breathing in near- and full-term infants; it is attributed to a delay in the clearance of alveolar fluids. Prophylactic antibiotics are usually administered until blood cultures are reported negative for 48 hours.
OBJECTIVES: To prospectively compare outcomes of infants presented with classic TTN who were treated with or denied from intravenous antibiotics.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted on all infants admitted with classic TTN. Pre-set diagnostic criteria for classic TTN were a

BACKGROUND: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is the most common cause of respiratory distress in newborns. Although associated with some morbidity, it is generally believed that once TTN resolves, there is no further increased risk for respiratory disease. However, in limited studies frequency of wheezing attacks is found to be increased in patients who had TTN diagnosis during the newborn period, in comparison to patients who had no respiratory problem. Thus, the question arises as to whether TTN is an innocent disease.
METHODS: This study was done retrospectively. We recorded the de
