Of dogs and hookworms: man's best friend and his parasites as a model for translational biomedical research.

We present evidence that the dog hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) is underutilised in the study of host-parasite interactions, particularly as a proxy for the human-hookworm relationship. The inability to passage hookworms through all life stages in vitro means that adult stage hookworms have to be harvested from the gut of their definitive hosts for ex vivo research. This makes study of the human-hookworm interface difficult for technical and ethical reasons. The historical association of humans, dogs and hookworms presents a unique triad of positive evolutionary pressure to drive the A. caninu

Anatomical MRI and CT Imaging Atlas of Lanyu Pigs: A Foundational Resource for Translational and Biomedical Research.

The Lanyu pig, a genetically unique miniature breed native to Taiwan, represents a valuable yet under-characterised large-animal model in biomedical research. Here, we present a detailed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT)-based anatomical atlas of male and female Lanyu pigs at 5-6 months of age. MRI effectively visualised brain, reproductive and abdominal structures, with T1-weighted images providing sharp anatomical boundaries and T2-weighted images enhancing cerebrospinal fluid and soft-tissue contrast. CT provided high-resolution visualisation of skeletal and card

Generation of a Bovine Primary Enteroid-Derived Two-Dimensional Monolayer Culture System for Applications in Translational Biomedical Research.

Organoid cell culture systems can recapitulate the complexity observed in tissues, making them useful in studying host-pathogen interactions, evaluating drug efficacy and toxicity, and tissue bioengineering. However, applying these models for the described reasons may be limited because of the three-dimensional (3D) nature of these models. For example, using 3D enteroid culture systems to study digestive diseases is challenging due to the inaccessibility of the intestinal lumen and its secreted substances. Indeed, stimulation of 3D organoids with pathogens requires either luminal microinjectio

Translational human gut microbiome research: What are the missing pieces of the puzzle?

BACKGROUND: Human gut microbiome research has expanded remarkably over the past two decades, revealing the fundamental role of gut microbes in human health and disease. Despite these advances, translation into evidence-based clinical practice and public health implementation remains exceptionally limited. This integrative translational perspective review evaluates human gut microbiome research across four critical aspects: translational successes, barriers to effective translation, applicability of frameworks from other medical disciplines, and strategies to enhance translational progress. MA

Editorial: When more science is not enough - rethinking the 'translational dividend' of clinical psychological science.

To broaden and diversify the perspectives and experiences informing the editorial work for this journal, 27 affiliate editors have joined the ranks of the editorial board since 2023. They each work together with one of the 20 joint editors. As an early-career scientist practitioner who sees both papers as well as patients (Dagan) and a late-career scientist seeing papers only (Schuengel), we have worked together in handling submissions within the broad domain of clinically relevant research on young people and their families. Our editorial dialogue picks up on an earlier editorial, raising the

Embedding lived experience in mental health research: what we need to pack (and unpack) for the future in mental health research and translation.

The incorporation of lived experience in mental health research has been a challenge for decades, pushing the boundaries of research to focus on the priorities of those most impacted. The people who should be the ultimate beneficiaries of research and its translation hold significant knowledge about both the topics of research and the way it should be respectfully conducted. However, despite policy, funding and most recently publishing directives that purport to support genuine lived experience-focused and -led research, progress remains slow, and debates are frequently still dominated by non-

Ethical design as a prerequisite for translational microbiome science.

Human microbiome research is expanding globally, yet remains dominated by samples, institutions, and leadership from the Global North. This imbalance undermines scientific validity, as microbiomes are shaped by socio-ecological context and temporal dynamics, and risks producing diagnostics and therapeutics that are not applicable across diverse populations. In this comment, we engage with van Daele et al.'s framework of co-laboration and argue for ethical, interdisciplinary, and locally led research models that center community participation, context-rich metadata, and equitable authorship. We

The Subtle Crisis: Public Domain Genomes and the Ethics of Translational Infrastructure.

Public domain human genomic resources are infrastructure: tools researchers use to ask basic biological questions whose answers are then translated into products and care. Translational science now asks them to support an expanding set of tasks, including clinical variant interpretation for diverse populations, pharmacogenomic prescribing, polygenic risk prediction, and the training of clinical artificial intelligence. The corpus of public domain genomes, due in large part to upstream recruitment choices, is not fit for these purposes, and the gap between discovery and translation is widening.

Connecting the dots in neuroscience research: The future of evidence synthesis.

Making progress in neuroscience research involves learning from existing data. In this perspective piece, we explore the potential of a data-driven evidence ecosystem to connect all primary data streams, and synthesis efforts to inform evidence-based research and translational success from bench to bedside. To enable this transformation, we set out how we can produce evidence designed with evidence curation in mind. All data should be findable, understandable, and easily synthesisable, using a combination of human and machine effort. This will require shifts in research culture and tailored in

Alzheimer's disease research and development: a call for a new research roadmap.

Epidemiological projections of the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias, the rapidly expanding population over the age of 65, and the enormous societal consequence on health, economics, and community foretell of a looming global public health crisis. Currently available treatments for AD are symptomatic, with modest effect sizes and limited impact on longer term disease outcomes. There have been no newly approved pharmaceutical treatments in the last decade, despite enormous efforts to develop disease-modifying treatments directed at Alzheimer's-associated pathology. An
