Bioactive Collagen Peptides in Veterinary and Biomedical Science-Part II: The Gut-Collagen Peptide Axis, Bile Acid Signaling, and Translational Therapeutic Applications.

Bioactive collagen peptides and collagen hydrolysates are dietary proteins whose degradation products also carry signaling activity. This second part of a two-part narrative review addresses the translational dimensions of their bioactivity, integrating veterinary clinical trials, controlled animal-model studies, and human biomedical data, with evidence strictly stratified by type. The gastrointestinal tract acts not only as the absorption site but as a target organ. In cell culture and rodent models, luminal collagen fragments restore tight-junction integrity, alter the microbiome, and shift

Translational human gut microbiome research: What are the missing pieces of the puzzle?

BACKGROUND: Human gut microbiome research has expanded remarkably over the past two decades, revealing the fundamental role of gut microbes in human health and disease. Despite these advances, translation into evidence-based clinical practice and public health implementation remains exceptionally limited. This integrative translational perspective review evaluates human gut microbiome research across four critical aspects: translational successes, barriers to effective translation, applicability of frameworks from other medical disciplines, and strategies to enhance translational progress. Editorial: When more science is not enough - rethinking the 'translational dividend' of clinical psychological science.

To broaden and diversify the perspectives and experiences informing the editorial work for this journal, 27 affiliate editors have joined the ranks of the editorial board since 2023. They each work together with one of the 20 joint editors. As an early-career scientist practitioner who sees both papers as well as patients (Dagan) and a late-career scientist seeing papers only (Schuengel), we have worked together in handling submissions within the broad domain of clinically relevant research on young people and their families. Our editorial dialogue picks up on an earlier editorial, raising the

Ethical design as a prerequisite for translational microbiome science.

Human microbiome research is expanding globally, yet remains dominated by samples, institutions, and leadership from the Global North. This imbalance undermines scientific validity, as microbiomes are shaped by socio-ecological context and temporal dynamics, and risks producing diagnostics and therapeutics that are not applicable across diverse populations. In this comment, we engage with van Daele et al.'s framework of co-laboration and argue for ethical, interdisciplinary, and locally led research models that center community participation, context-rich metadata, and equitable authorship. We

The Subtle Crisis: Public Domain Genomes and the Ethics of Translational Infrastructure.

Public domain human genomic resources are infrastructure: tools researchers use to ask basic biological questions whose answers are then translated into products and care. Translational science now asks them to support an expanding set of tasks, including clinical variant interpretation for diverse populations, pharmacogenomic prescribing, polygenic risk prediction, and the training of clinical artificial intelligence. The corpus of public domain genomes, due in large part to upstream recruitment choices, is not fit for these purposes, and the gap between discovery and translation is widening.

Formation of a Translational Science Professional Identity: A Heuristic Framework and Research Agenda.

Based upon substantive professional engagement over two decades and the collective action of diverse professionals, this conceptual paper proposes that translational science (TS) is best understood as a meta-discipline. As with Science, Technology, Education, and Mathematics (STEM) or Information Sciences, meta-disciplines rely on coherent professional identities. Positioning TS in this way foregrounds the need to develop such identities across diverse contributors. TS team members often begin with deep domain-specific expertise followed by acquisition of cross-cutting translational capabiliti

The evolving role of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology: basic science, translation, and clinical integration.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ophthalmology has emerged as the proving ground for medical artificial intelligence (AI) because of its imaging-centric workflows, standardized data acquisition, and well defined clinical endpoints. Recently, the field has started transitioning from narrowly trained, task-specific algorithms toward multimodal models that are trained on large datasets and can be adapted to many tasks. These models may integrate information from images, text, and clinical data and are increasingly trialed in real-world settings. This review examines recent advances and ongoing controversies in

Translational advances of exosomes in neurodegeneration towards precision healthcare: From biomarkers to therapeutic frontiers.

Exosomes are nanoscale extracellular vesicles (EVs) that mediate intercellular communication and carry proteins, lipids, mRNAs, and non-coding RNAs reflective of their parental cells. Their biogenesis, molecular composition, and ability to traverse physiological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier, position exosomes as powerful candidates for biomarker development and therapeutic delivery in neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). In Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and prion disorders, exosomes not only mirror pathological processes but actively participate in

Epigenetic regulation of neutrophil dysfunction in sepsis: mechanisms, biomarkers, and translational challenges.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection and remains a major challenge in critical care medicine. Neutrophils are central components of innate immunity, but their functions are markedly altered during sepsis. These alterations include disturbed granulopoiesis, prolonged survival, impaired migration, dysregulated inflammatory responses, imbalanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and excessive formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Epigenetic regulation may help explain how neutrophils acquire distinct f
