Comparison between thulium laser resection of prostate and transurethral plasmakinetic resection of prostate or transurethral resection of prostate.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common diseases in middle-aged and elderly men. In the present study, we aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of thulium laser resection of the prostate (TMLRP) with either transurethral plasmakinetic resection of the prostate (TUPKP) or transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). A literature search was performed, eventually, 14 studies involving 1587 patients were included. Forest plots were produced by using Revman 5.2.0 software. Our meta-analysis showed that operation time, decrease in hemoglobin level, length of hospital stay,

Transurethral resection versus transurethral incision of the prostate.

A new operation, transurethral incision of prostate (TUIP), performed on 846 patients in 20 years, is offered primarily for the management of bladder outlet obstruction in young, middle-aged, and those old men with small prostates who otherwise would be subjected for years to dilatation, massage, and drugs with only partial and temporary relief. In matched cases, results and complications are the same for TUIP and TURP except for the troublesome bladder neck contracture and the higher incidence of reflex into the seminal vesicles and sexual complications after resection of the prostate. Transurethral laser resection of the prostate.

Transurethral laser resection of the prostate was performed on 25 patients for the management of bladder outlet obstruction secondary to prostatic hyperplasia. All of the patients in our series were treated on an outpatient basis and the majority of these under IV sedation. Patient selection was limited to older, high-risk patients who were poor surgical candidates for transurethral resection of the prostate or suprapubic prostatectomy because of underlying medical problems. Successful results were noted in 20 of the 25 cases (80%). Five procedures were unsuccessful because the patients were u

Transurethral resection of prostatic abscess.

Prostate abscess (PA) is an uncommon prostatic infection, with risk factors including indwelling catheters, acute or chronic prostatitis, bladder outlet obstruction, voiding dysfunction, recent urologic instrumentation (especially transrectal prostate biopsy), chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus (DM), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), intravenous drug use (IVDU), and hepatitis C. Treatment of PA consists of antibiotics and abscess drainage via transurethral resection (TUR) or image-guided transrectal or transperineal drainage. Numerous studies have demonstrated that TUR of PA has

[Prostate transurethral resection syndrome].

The "transurethral resection of prostate" syndrome (TURPS) is the clinical manifestation of the resorption into the patient's body of a large amount of glycocolle-containing irrigating fluid used for this procedure. The full clinical picture, which is seldom seen, consists of dyspnoea, nausea, arterial hypertension, an increased central venous pressure, cerebral oedema, cardiogenic shock and renal failure. Improved surgical techniques, as well as incomplete and atypical forms of the syndrome could explain this low incidence. Absorption into the blood stream may be rapid, by way of the prostati

Complications of transurethral resection of the prostate.

A series of 632 patients undergoing one or more transurethral resections of the prostate gland at Wesley Pavilion of Northwestern Memorial Hospital is presented. Group characteristics, associated illnesses, and complications are reviewed and compared to an equally sized group of patients undergoing transurethral prostatic resection at the same hospital some twenty years earlier. This study has shown improvement in incidence of several complications, especially those related to infection and pyelonephritis, and urinary incontinence. Mortality rate has improved significantly and is likely due in

Transurethral resection of the prostate--"now and then".

The number of transurethral resections of the prostate (TURP) performed each year is decreasing. The aim of this study was to assess a cohort of patients undergoing TURP and compare this to one twenty years earlier in terms of procedure, complications and outcomes. A retrospective comparative analysis of one hundred consecutive TURPs performed in 2010 was compared to one hundred cases performed in 1990. Fifty-five (55%) had a urinary catheter (UC) in situ pre-operatively in 2010 compared to 22 (22%) in 1990. The length of catheterisation time was significantly longer in 2010 compared with 1990

Electrosurgical transurethral resection of the prostate and transurethral incision of the prostate (monopolar techniques).

INTRODUCTION: We summarize the current guidelines, techniques, efficacy and complications associated with monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Patients who elect to have endoscopic surgical bladder outlet reduction are faced with an abundance of evolving treatment options. As new technology comes and goes, TURP and TUIP remain the gold standard for which new treatments are compared. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of past and contemporary data including American and European guideline

Transurethral incision of prostate compared with transurethral resection of prostate in 132 matching cases.

In a prospective project during a 2-year period 132 patients with bladder outlet obstruction who were candidates for transurethral incision of the prostate were managed alternately by transurethral incision and transurethral resection of the prostate. Both operations were compared in matched patients. The results and complications favored transurethral incision, although there was no statistical significance except for the high incidence of bladder neck contracture after transurethral resection (p equals 0.028).

Transurethral resection of prostate abscess: is it different from conventional transurethral resection for benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Purpose. To present our experience of prostate abscess management by modified transurethral resection (TUR) technique. Methods. Seventeen men with prostate abscess undergoing TUR between 2003 and 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. Details of demography, surgical procedures, complications, and followup were noted. Results. With a mean age of 61.53 ± 8.58 years, all patients had multifocal abscess cavities. Initially, 6 men underwent classical TUR similar to the technique used for benign prostatic enlargement (group 1). Next, 11 men underwent modified TUR (group 2) in which bladder neck and ant

Hyponatraemia following transurethral resection of the prostate.

In a prospective study of 100 patients undergoing transurethral resection, changes in serum sodium were estimated during the per-operative and post-operative periods. The weight of prostate resected and the volume of irrigant fluid used influenced the changes in serum sodium. In 93 patients these changes were not statistically significant. In only seven patients were significant falls in serum sodium recorded, in one case to a level of 103 mmol/l. All seven exhibited the clinical features of the transurethral syndrome and there was one post-operative death which we attributed to it. The TUR sy

Transurethral resection of the prostate stricture management.

For more than nine decades, transurethral resection of the prostate remains the gold standard for the surgical treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic obstruction. The occurrence of urethral strictures after transurethral resection of the prostate is one of the major late complications and has been reported as the leading cause of iatrogenic urethral strictures in patients older than 45 years who underwent urethroplasty. Although several postulations have been proposed to explain the urethral stricture after transurethral resection of the prostate, the exact etiology

[Transurethral resection of the prostate (author's transl)].

The authors report a retrospective study of 320 primary resections for benign prostatic hypertrophy yielding a mean weight of 30 grams, only 5% exceeding 50 grams. Routine internal urethrotomy of the penible urethra carried out in 62 patients did not prevent urethral stenosis in 2 of them. There were no cases of fluid absorption syndrome, but the relatively frequent nature of the immediate (5 cases) or early (10 cases) abundant bleeding should be noted. Only one third of the patients required a transfusion. Seventeen developed a septicaemia and six epididymitis. Septicaemia (2 cases), pulmonar

Transurethral incision of the prostate: a viable alternative to transurethral resection.

TUIP has been shown to be an effective method of relieving urinary outflow obstruction caused by BPH when prostatic size is 30 g or less. This is the situation for approximately 80% of patients undergoing TURP today. The long-term results of TUIP are quite favorable when compared with those of TURP. It is an easier technique to master than TURP. In addition, TUIP has a reduced operative time, little intraoperative and postoperative hemorrhage, reduced incidence of dilutional hyponatremia (TUR syndrome), and decreased length of hospitalization. TUIP also offers a lower risk of complications, es
