Thoracic trauma. Nursing assessment and management.

The importance of the respiratory system to total body functioning cannot be overemphasized. It is imperative that the nurse realize that the first priority in trauma care is to maintain and support the respiratory system. The nurse must be able to rapidly and effectively perform a primary survey, recognize the clinical manifestations of life-threatening thoracic injuries, and intervene in the care of the patient to help stabilize and maintain the patient's respiratory function. The nurse must not only be able to asses, but must also be able to technically intervene rapidly and effectively. Ot

Interpersonal Trauma in the Lives of Nurses and Perceptions of Nursing Work.

The purpose of this study was to explore associations between trauma experiences among nurses and nursing perceptions of risk for involuntary job loss and standing in society. This observational study used 2001 data from the Nurses' Health Study II (N = 53,323 female nurses). The outcome variables were nurses' perceptions of their risk for involuntary job loss and their social standing in the United States and within their own community. The exposure variables were childhood and adulthood interpersonal trauma. Nurses reported high levels of emotional (60% childhood; 44% adulthood), physical (4

Nursing Trauma and Coping: An Integrative Review.

Nurses are exposed to traumatic situations in a plethora of settings. Continuous exposure to stressors and the inability to cope with trauma may result in the development of psychological disorders. An integrative review was conducted to analyze the state of the science concerning the impact of trauma in the nursing profession on nurses coping mechanisms. Inclusion criteria necessitated studies used qualitative or quantitative design, published in English language peer reviewed journals. A total of 25 studies met the inclusion criteria after full text review. The body of research is limited in

CE: Trauma-Informed Care in Nursing Practice.

Over the past 30 years, researchers have found that childhood trauma and its subsequent stress have a strong and cumulative effect on health in adulthood. Trauma in childhood often leads to mental health problems, skeletal fractures, and early death from conditions such as heart disease, cancer, lung disease, and liver disease. Compounding the effects of traumatic stress, health care systems often create a population of "never-served" persons who avoid health care settings because they've been subject to judgment and marginalization. Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a skill underutilized by healt

Trauma nursing: an advanced practice case study.

Trauma is the leading cause of death in people less than 40 years of age. Blunt or penetrating trauma injuries may be a result of gunshot wounds, stabbings, head injuries, burns, falls or motor vehicle collisions. Unlike other patients entering the health care system, trauma victims have no time for hospital preparation. The physiologic and psychosocial complications resulting directly from the traumatic incident provide response patterns not typical of other patients. Further to this unpredictability, the trauma patient usually sustains multiple system injuries, making it difficult to design c

Tertiary survey by trauma nurse specialist at a paediatric trauma centre.

INTRODUCTION: Tertiary surveys aim to detect injuries missed in the initial assessment of trauma. We introduced a process by which the trauma nurse specialist performed a number of the tertiary surveys (NTSs) at our paediatric trauma centre. METHODS: Data from the first six months following introduction of the NTS were compared to retrospective data from the six months prior to NTS implementation (pre-NTS), when trauma surveys were completed by medical staff. RESULTS: Over the 12-month period, 130 children met the criteria for a tertiary survey. Pre-NTS, 57/62 eligible patients received a te

[Occupational trauma of the vertebral column in nursing workers].

All occupational accidents (CAT) reported at a University hospital, from January 1990 to December 1997, were analyzed and the characteristics of the vertebral column trauma caused by the occupational accidents involving members of the nursing team were investigated. During this period, 531 accidents were reported and 37 (7%) of these were typical vertebral column traumas. These results suggested that the number of accidents reported were below actual estimates and that the nursing auxiliaries were the most affected. The accidents were mainly caused by falls and during the transport or transfer

Supporting the well-being of nurses working with trauma.

The nursing profession has long been associated with exposure to traumatic experiences, including mental health crises, violence, emergencies and death. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic amplified the importance of recognising the effects that working with trauma can have on nurses' physical and psychological well-being, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. This article explores the concept of trauma and its various manifestations, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and secondary traumatic stress, which are increasingly prevalent among nurses. Recognition and nursing management of abusive head trauma in children.

Abusive head trauma (AHT) describes an injury to the head caused by a deliberate impact or shaking by a parent or carer. It can cause significant morbidity and mortality in infants, and is most commonly seen in those aged under 2 years. The initial presentation of AHT can include vague symptoms and the correct diagnosis may be missed by health professionals. Subdural haematoma, brain oedema and retinal haemorrhages are well-known features associated with AHT. However, other conditions such as birth trauma, accidental falls in infants and bleeding disorders can all mimic AHT, thus making its re

Perceptions and experiences of psychological trauma in nursing and psychiatric nursing students: A small scale qualitative case study.

Entry-level health care professionals are socialized to accept the norms and values associated with institutions in which violence and suffering is considered an anticipated and even routine and normalized part of frontline care. The objective of the study was to illuminate the subjective experience of psychological trauma in graduates from a baccalaureate nursing and psychiatric nursing program using the McGill Illness Narrative Interview, an ethnographic interview guide. Participants included graduates from each program in a western Canadian province who reflected back on their experiences o
