Echinostomatidae (Trematoda) is the largest family within the class Trematoda. Members of this family have been studied for many years in relation to their utility as basic research models in biodiversity and systematics and also as experimental models in parasitology since they offer many advantages. Echinostomes have contributed significantly to numerous developments in many areas studied by parasitologists and experimental biologists. In this review, we examine the history of the echinostomebased studies from the beginnings to the present. For this purpose, we have divided the history of ec

In this study a new species of Echinochasnius (Dietz, 1909) is recorded for the first time in Egypt. Life cycle of one of gymnocephalous cercariae procured from Melanoides tuberculata snail was successfully completed in the laboratory. A total of 407 Melanoides tuberculata snails were collected from Mansouriya Canal, Giza Governorate. They were individually exposed to artificial light to determine natural infection with trematode larvae, Seven snails were found infected with gymnocephalous cercariae (infection index of 1.71). These cercariae were used to infect Gambusia affinis fish as second

This review examines coinfection of selected species of Schistosoma with bacteria, protozoa and helminths and focuses on the effects of the coinfection on the hosts. The review is based mainly on tables that contain the salient information on the coinfecting organisms in vertebrate hosts. Further explanation and clarification of the tables are given in the text. A table is also provided that gives synoptic information on the 37 species in the 19 genera considered in this review. Coinfection studies with Schistosoma species and the other organisms were considered in six tables plus the accompan

Ascocotyle longa is parasitic trematode with wide distribution throughout America, Europe, Africa, and Middle East. Despite the fact that this fish-borne pathogen has been considered an agent of human heterophyiasis in Brazil, the molecules involved in the host-parasite interaction remain unknown. The present study reports the proteome profile of A. longa metacercariae collected from the fish Mugil liza from Brazil. This infective stage for humans, mammals and birds was analyzed using nLC-MS/MS approach. We identified a large repertoire of proteins, which are mainly involved in energy metaboli

Cajamarca is an important Andean livestock production area located in northern Peru and at the same time endemic in a poorly studied disease known as paramphistomosis. The purpose of this research was to calculate the frequency of paramphistomids in sheep (Ovis aries) slaughtered in the Camal Municipal de Cajamarca, located in the city of Cajamarca. Between the months of February to September 2019, 386 samples of rumen-reticulum were collected that were later classified by age and origin of the animals. Transferred to the laboratory, the stomach contents were emptied; they were examined meticu

Cercariae of three Paramphistomoidea species were identified in the trematode fauna parasitizing the freshwater snails Gabbia fuchsiana from Vietnam and Helicorbis sujfunensis and Gyraulus centrifugops from the southern part of the Russian Far East. To elucidate their taxonomic status, the study included a morphological description accompanied by a molecular analysis using both nuclear and mitochondrial markers. An analysis of the evidence obtained showed that taxonomic identification of paramphistomes can only be possible on the basis of both morphological and molecular data, which are not al

Infection of molluscs Succinea putris by trematodes Leucochloridium paradoxum was studied in the region of Vyritsa (Leningrad Province) during the period of 2008-2014. On the basis of the obtained data, seasonal dynamics of infection of molluscs can be presented as follows. Infection of S. putris occurs during the whole warm period from May to August. Young sporocysts of L. paradoxum overwinter and the metacercariae that develop in their extensions mature during spring becoming infective for birds. In the second half of summer, sporocysts start degenerating and die in late August-September. Ea

The platynosomiasis, a worldwide parasitic disease with importance for domestic cat, has an etiological agent species of trematodes of the genus Platynosomum, whose complete life cycles are not yet known. The real role of lizards in the transmission of this dicrocoeliid parasite (as obligatory intermediate or paratenic host) still needs to be defined. In the present study, oval-shaped encysted metacercariae obtained from terrestrial isopods (Oniscidea sp. and Nagurus nanus) and elongated excysted metacercariae found in biliary ducts and gallbladder of lizards (Hemidactylus mabouia) in Brazil w

The Cyathocotylidae Mühling, 1898 is a family of primitive diplostomoid trematodes important for understanding the evolution of the superfamily Diplostomoidea. However, cyathocotylids remain poorly studied with the use of molecular techniques. In this study we sequenced the 5.8S + ITS2 region, 28S rRNA, and cox1 genes of two cyathocotylid species and obtained new morphological data on them. We propose Georduboisia nom. nov. instead of the preoccupied name Duboisia Szidat, 1936 (junior homonym of Duboisia Stremme, 1911). Adults of Georduboisia cf. teganuma (Ishii, 1935) and Paracoenogonimus ova

The genus Allocreadium is a group of digenetic trematodes whose adult representatives mainly parasitize the intestines of freshwater fishes. The aim of this research is to reconstruct the phylogeny of four Palearctic species of this genus, Allocreadium dogieli, Allocreadium isoporum, Allocreadium papilligerum, and Allocreadium sp. ex Oreoleuciscus potanini from Mongolia. The DNA sequences of the 28S rRNA gene and the rDNA ITS2 region were obtained and then analyzed for phylogenetic inference. The analysis is complemented with the morphological descriptions for all four species. Phylogenetic an

The development of Haplorchis taichui was studied in sixteen mice, Mus musculus. Metacercarial cysts of H. taichui were obtained from the freshwater fish, Thynnichthys thynnoides, collected in Chiang Mai Province, north Thailand. Approximately 200 active metacercariae were orally introduced into each mouse. Two mice were randomly sacrificed and necropsied daily from day 2-9 postinfection (pi). Two peaks of increment in the length and width of worms were found at day 3 and 7 pi. H. taichui was rapid in maturation, similar to other minute intestinal flukes. Rudimentary sex organs were found at d

Metagonimus yokogawai (Katsurada, 1912) Katsurada, 1912 (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) is parasitic in the small intestine of mammals including man and birds in Far Eastern Russia, Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan. In the present study, the metacercariae and adults of M. yokogawai were redescribed to designate a neotype of this fluke together with reviews of previous studies including study histories from the first discovery to now. We particularly, attempted to review the study histories and morphological descriptions of M. yokogawai for the species validity, and compared with the morphological ch

Human cases of echinostomiasis have been sporadically diagnosed by extracting worms in the endoscopy in Korea and Japan. Most of these were caused by Echinostoma hortense infection. However, in the present study, we detected 2 live worms of Echinostoma cinetorchis in the ascending colon of a Korean man (68-year old) admitted to the Gyeongsang National University Hospital with complaint of intermittent right lower quadrant abdominal pain for 5 days. Under colonoscopy, 1 worm was found attached on the edematous and hyperemic mucosal surface of the proximal ascending colon and the other was detec

Platynosomum fastosum is a hepatic trematode which causes the so-called lizard poisoning in cats. This parasite is reported in tropical and sub-tropical areas infecting the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts of cats. Despite its clinical importance, the diagnosis of P. fastosum has been poorly investigated so far. In this study, three cases of infection by P. fastosum in cats are reported. The FLOTAC technique was utilized for the first time in the detection of eggs of this parasite. Three cats (two males and one female), being one of them with a history of diarrhea and vomiting, were diagnose

In the context of the present-day teaching of parasitocenoses and the proposition that the pathogen's population is the only compulsory and specific component of a natural focus, the author discloses the ecological bases of the combination of natural foci of opisthorchiasis and methorchiasis (M. bilis), methorchiasis (M. bilis) and methorchiasis (M. xanthosomus). These foci are host population-combined. While analyzing the combination of foci, it is expedient to consider them in pairs since this provides a way of identifying only the combination bases that are unique to these foci. The parasit

The metacercarial infections of door snails (Gastropoda: Clausiliidae) with unknown species of the genus Brachylaima (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae) have recently been reported in eastern Honshu and Kyushu, Japan. A large scale snail survey was carried out to clarify their taxonomic status. From the period of 2015 to 2020, a total of 1239 land snails (768 door snails and 471 others) were collected from 32 localities in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The resulting trematode isolates were identified as Brachylaima sp. by mitochondrial DNA barcoding. The sporocysts were found only a few from Megalophae
