The kissing bugs--Triatoma rubida (Uhler), Triatoma protracta (Uhler), and Triatoma recurva (Stal)--are common hematophagous bugs in southeastern Arizona and responsible for severe allergic reactions in some individuals who are bitten. They also possess the potential to transmit the blood parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi. We previously found the essential oil, citronella, to be an excellent deterrent of feeding of T. rubida on a restrained mouse. In this work, we tested major components--alcohols, aldehydes, and monoterpenes--of citronella oil for repellency against the three common triatome specie

The effectiveness of a trap for triatomines baited with yeast cultures has been previously demonstrated for Triatoma infestans in laboratory assays. We report here results from laboratory assays testing yeast traps for Triatoma sordida, Triatoma brasiliensis, Triatoma pseudomaculata, and Panstrongylus megistus. All assays were conducted in an open experimental arena 100 cm x 100 cm, with two traps placed at opposite sides of the arena. One of the traps contained a yeast culture, and the other trap contained a saccharose solution as a control. Two series of experiments were done, one without a

This study analyzed the body and the operculum of eggs of Triatoma rubrovaria, T. carcavalloi and T. circummaculata, considered sylvatic species that live in sympatry.Triatoma rubrovaria is currently considered the most important vector of Trypanosoma cruzi in the rural areas of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, followed by T.circummaculata. Significant differences other than morphometry have been observed in the egg structures of the three species using traditional microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Triatoma circummaculata eggs are smaller than those of T.rubrovaria and T. carcavalloi

One hundred and thirty-two male and female Triatoma sordida were marked with fluorescent paint and released at an experimental site on the salt flats of central Argentina, distant from any inhabited dwellings. Flight by these bugs commenced just after sunset, and the bugs were then systematically searched for using portable ultraviolet lights. There was no apparent tendency for the bugs to fly in any particular direction, but those whose flight could be observed directly all seemed to fly in approximately straight lines at a height of 0.5-1 m. Of the 86 bugs that flew from the release point, 1

Kissing bugs (Family Reduviidae) can be the source of nocturnal dermatologic wounds in the mid to southern latitudes in the United States. The insects are obligate blood feeders and though the bites may be asymptomatic, a variety of dermatologic eruptions or death from anaphylaxis can result. The various dermatologic forms of the bite can be mistaken for herpes zoster, erythema multiforme and the ubiquitous catch-all diagnoses of "spider-bite."

Biological and physiological parameters of Triatoma brasiliensis, Triatoma infestans, and Triatoma pseudomaculata were studied and compared. T. brasiliensis, reared on mice, showed a faster evolutionary cycle from first stage to adult and higher fecundity, when compared to the other species. T. infestans showed the fastest blood intake in both hosts tested, followed by T. brasiliensis and T. pseudomaculata. Clotting tests using salivary gland extracts of T. brasiliensis presented intermediary values of anti-clotting activity when compared to T. infestans and T. pseudomaculata.

The pathology and attachment of Blastocrithidia triatomae in two regions of the midgut of the reduviid bug Triatoma infestans (the stomach and the small intestine) were investigated by electron microscopy. In both regions the extracellular-membrane layers and the apical microvilli were often reduced, and some cells of the intestinal wall were vacuolated. In the stomach two types of attachment occurred: Flagella with intraflagellar swellings lay over and between the apices of the microvilli of the stomach cells, and in microvilli-free regions the cell body of B. triatomae seemed to be anchored

To efficiently control the triatomines Triatoma brasiliensis and Triatoma pseudomaculata, a field trial was performed to compare conventional versus focal spraying of deltamethrin 5% SC at 25 mg a. i./m2 and the slow-release organophosphate malathion 8.3% SR at 2g a. i./m2. The assay took place in the county of Boa Viagem, Ceará State, with 1541 households, randomly separated into 4 groups. Two of them received focal spraying: PT, treated with deltamethrin indoors and in the peridomicile, and PL, which received slow-release malathion in the same circumstances. The other groups received convent

Triatoma costalimai and Triatoma jatai are related species, which occur in sympatry in Paranã, Tocantins, Brazil, in rocky outcrops and in peridomicile and intradomicile environments. This study compared morphologic and morphometric aspects of the eggs of these species using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Operculum cells (OP) and egg body (EB) were drawn and photographed, their surfaces were measured, and spots were quantified. Statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA and t-tests. OM showed an egg exochorium with spots in T. costalimai and a predominance

Bartonella spp. are most often transmitted by arthropod vectors or animal bites and scratches. However, the vector species involved in the transmission of human bartonellosis remain poorly understood. This study investigated the presence of Bartonella in Triatoma rubrofasciata from Guangxi and Hainan provinces in China, evaluating its potential as a vector. Bartonella was identified in T. rubrofasciata samples through PCR amplification and sequencing of the ITS, gltA, and rpoB genes. The survival duration of Bartonella in triatomines, along with the potential for transovarial transmission was

Phylogenetic approaches based on mitochondrial DNA variation (fragments of Cyt B and 16S ribosomal RNA) have revealed Triatoma sherlocki as the most recent species addition to the Triatoma brasiliensis species complex; a monophyletic group which includes T. brasiliensis, Triatoma melanica, and Triatoma juazeirensis. T. sherlocki is the most differentiated among all species of this complex: it is unable to fly, possesses longer legs than the other members, and has reddish tonality in some parts of its exochorion. We question whether these species are reproductively compatible because of this pr

We conducted a lab-based comparative study on vector capacity features of two species of triatomines: Triatoma brasiliensis and T. melanica. Both are members of the T. brasiliensis species complex. The former is the most important Chagas disease vector in the northeastern region of Brazil. To date, no transmission via T. melanica has been recorded. Immature insects exhibited distinct intermoult periods without a direct relationship to a given species. Females of T. brasiliensis consumed an average of 1.9 times more meals (mean = 12.92 vs 6.63) and survived for a shorter period (mean =330.8 day

Two species of trypanosomatid flagellates, Trypanosoma cruzi and Blastocrithidia triatomae which develop in the intestine of Triatoma infestans, were incubated with lectin-gold conjugates to demonstrate sugar components of the cell surface with the electron microscope. T. cruzi, strain "Chile 5" (zymodeme 1), bound SBA-gold, revealing N-acetyl-galactosamine and/or galactose residues. WGA-BSA-gold, specific for N-acetylglucosamine, did not bind to the surface of this flagellate. On the other hand, N-acetyl-glucosamine bound WGA-BSA-gold on the cell membrane of epimastigotes and cysts of B. tria

The Health Administration Agencies of many municipalities in Greater Buenos Aires (GBA) receive frequent reports on triatomines in houses. The aim of this work was to identify and describe the dispersal foci of Triatoma infestans in an urban neighborhood of GBA, and contribute to the knowledge of the epidemiological situation in the region. In June 1998, potentially infested places were entomologically evaluated. T. infestans was only detected in a hen building for egg production, which housed approximately 6,000 birds. A total of 2,930 insects were collected. Density was about 9 triatomines/m

UNLABELLED: Triatoma dimidiata, a Chagas disease vector widely distributed along Central America, has great capability for domestic adaptation as the majority of specimens caught inside human dwellings or in peridomestic areas fed human blood. Exploring the salivary compounds that overcome host haemostatic and immune responses is of great scientific interest. Here, we provide a deeper insight into its salivary gland molecules. We used high-throughput RNA sequencing to examine in depth the T. dimidiata salivary gland transcriptome. From >51 million reads assembled, 92.21% are related to putativ

Control of the Chagas disease vector, Triatoma infestans, relies on the application of pyrethroid insecticides, especially deltamethrin. We performed laboratory studies to determine whether a T. infestans nymph that comes into contact with a deltamethrin-treated surface horizontally transfers the insecticide to subsequent triatomines. We found that a triatomine that walks on a deltamethrin-treated surface for a short period of time has the ability to transport the insecticide in concentrations sufficient to kill other triatomines with which it comes into contact. The effect was limited to high

In Arequipa, Peru, vectorborne transmission of Chagas disease by Triatoma infestans has become an urban problem. We conducted an entomologic survey in a periurban community of Arequipa to identify risk factors for triatomine infestation and determinants of vector population densities. Of 374 households surveyed, triatomines were collected from 194 (52%), and Trypanosoma cruzi-carrying triatomines were collected from 72 (19.3%). Guinea pig pens were more likely than other animal enclosures to be infested and harbored 2.38x as many triatomines. Stacked brick and adobe enclosures were more likely

Triatomines are insects of great importance for public health, as they are vectors of protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. The genus Triatoma is the most representative in number of species and one of the most important from an epidemiological point of view. The Triatoma pseudomaculata subcomplex (composed of the species Triatoma arthurneivai, T. pseudomaculata, and T. wygodzinskyi [from the old subcomplex Triatoma maculata] and Triatoma baratai, Triatoma costalimai, Triatoma deaneorum, Triatoma jatai, and Triatoma williami [from the old Triatoma matogrossensis

Triatoma rubrofasciata is currently the most widely distributed species of Triatoma worldwide, and it is also widespread in southern China. T. rubrofasciata has been proven to transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, and is one of vectors transmitting Chagas disease, which poses a potential risk for transmission of imported Chagas disease in China. Findings from latest studies have shown that T. rubrofasciata naturally infects T. lewisi, T. conorhini, and T. rangeli, which undoubtedly increases significant risks of and challenges to trypanosomiasis control in China. This article briefly describes the speci

Brazil has just been certificated by Pan American Health Organization as 'free of Chagas disease transmission due to Triatoma infestans'. During the early 1980s, this species of blood-sucking bug alone was considered responsible for approximately 80% of Chagas disease transmission. But it was not always so. The species originally abundant in houses of central and eastern Brazil was Panstrongylus megistus, which seems to have been progressively displaced from houses by T. infestans during the past century. Indeed, T. infestans seems able to displace other Triatominae in artificial environments.
