Brazil has just been certificated by Pan American Health Organization as 'free of Chagas disease transmission due to Triatoma infestans'. During the early 1980s, this species of blood-sucking bug alone was considered responsible for approximately 80% of Chagas disease transmission. But it was not always so. The species originally abundant in houses of central and eastern Brazil was Panstrongylus megistus, which seems to have been progressively displaced from houses by T. infestans during the past century. Indeed, T. infestans seems able to displace other Triatominae in artificial environments.

Chagas disease is a key vector-borne disease. This illness is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas, which is transmitted by triatomine bugs. Largely, the control of this disease relies on reducing such contact. We optimized the performance of a box trap in laboratory conditions to capture four triatomine species: Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål), Triatoma infestans Klug, Triatoma phyllosoma (Burmeister), and Rhodnius prolixus Stål. We varied four components for a box trap: material, color, height, and bait attractants. All species were captured more in corrugated cardboard traps than in other trap

Triatomines are the vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, the main endemic disease affecting five to seven million people in Latin America. Besides Triatoma infestans, the most important T. cruzi vector in the Gran Chaco region, other triatomine species associated with sylvatic birds and mammals are responsible for the maintenance of the wild cycle of T. cruzi. The present study aimed at evaluating the house invasion by sylvatic triatomine species in rural communities of the Los Llanos region (La Rioja, Argentina) and its association with environmental variables.

The response to intra- and interspecific assembling signals was tested in three species of Chagas' disease vectors. As previously described for Triatoma infestans, larvae of both species, T. sordida and T. guasayana, aggregated on papers impregnated with their own excrement. Moreover, bugs belonging to each of the three species also aggregated on papers contaminated with faeces from the other two, with the only exception of the larvae of T. guasayana, which did not assemble on faeces of T. sordida. In all cases, the response to interspecific excrement was as strong as that to the intraspecific

Triatoma brasiliensis is one of the most important vectors of Chagas disease in the semiarid zone of the northeast of Brazil. Intraspecific morphological and behavioural variation has been reported for different populations. Results for four distinct populations using eight isoenzymes are reported here. The literature describes three subspecies: T. brasiliensis brasiliensis Neiva, 1911; T. brasiliensis melanica Neiva & Lent, 1941 and T. brasiliensis macromelasoma Galvão, 1956. These subspecies differ mainly in their cuticle colour pattern and were regarded as synonyms by Lent and Wygodzinsky (

Triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. This study aimed to assess the diversity of triatomines collected in 2023 from various regions of the State of Sonora, in Northwestern Mexico, from both wild (mainly rodent nests) and urban sites. Overall, 75 wild nests were dissected, with 36 % (27/75) positive for triatomines. A total of 180 triatomine specimens were collected, including 170 collected in wild nests, and ten collected in human dwellings. Identification was performed using taxonomic keys (for adults only) a

The triatomines are vectors of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, etiologic agent of Chagas disease. These insects are sexually active after the imaginal molt. Some aspects have been studied in Triatoma brasiliensis during the imaginal molt, such as autogeny in virgin females and the relationship between blood ingestion by fifth instar nymph and the realization of the imaginal molt. Thus, to aid in the understanding of reproductive biology and developmental physiology of these vectors, this article analyzes the spermatogenesis of T. brasiliensis during the imaginal molt. The analysis of the semi

Triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) are hematophagous insects that transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent for Chagas disease, to humans and other mammals. As medically important vectors, species such as Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) have long been used as a model organism for physiological studies. Laboratory rearing of triatomines is needed to support vector and parasite research. Many environmental conditions, such as suitable housing containers, light source and duration, temperature, humidity, and density, must be addressed when adapting triatomines from a natural ha

The reduviid subfamily Triatominae, also called kissing bugs, are vectors of Chagas disease, which is one of the most seriously neglected tropical parasitic diseases. Only three complete mitochondrial genomes of kissing bugs from the genus Triatoma have been sequenced to date. To better understand the diversity of mitochondrial genomes and the evolution of kissing bugs, mitochondrial genomes of three kissing bugs, Triatoma migrans, Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus, and Rhodnius pictipes, were sequenced using next-generation sequencing and a comparative mitochondrial genomic analysis of three gen

Triatominae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Reduviidae) includes 151 extant species that are all potential vectors of Chagas disease. The relationships among these species have been recently studied based on molecular and cytogenetical approaches, and although the morphology of these insects is fairly described, wide comparative studies and cladistics analysis based on this feature are lacking. A comparative study of the terminal abdominal segments in females of 26 species of Triatominae was performed in order to evaluate their importance for the distinction of genera and species, and obtain characters t

Chagas disease, also known as American Trypanosomiasis, is a parasitic infectious disease that is primarily transmitted by infected kissing bugs belonging to the subfamily Triatominae. Military personnel that conduct deployment operations (field training, patrols, combat, physical training and sustainment) in kissing-bug infested habitats are at risk. Transmission of disease to humans occurs by contact of skin and mucous membranes with infected kissing bug's feces. Additionally, transmission can result from blood transfusion, and ingestion of infected insects. However, the exact route of infec

We examined the degree of reproductive isolation in four populations of Triatoma mexicana Herrich-Schaeffer from Mexico along with fertility and the segregation of morphological characteristics in two generations of offspring from crosses between these populations. The percentage of couples with (fertile) offspring was high among all sets of crosses between cohorts from Peñamiller, Meztitlán, and Orizabita. It was low in crosses involving a cohort from Tierra Blanca, mainly in crosses with Meztitlán. Among sets of crosses involving Tierra Blanca specimens, whole first-generation (F1) individua

BACKGROUND: This paper reports the occurrence of Panstrongylus guentheri Berg, 1879 in the State of Mato Grosso (MT).
METHODS: Triatomines were captured in rural environments in municipalities of MT. Specimens were identified, and Trypanosoma cruzi infection was investigated.
RESULTS: Nineteen specimens of Panstrongylus guentheri were found, primarily inside houses. The geographical distribution of this species was recorded in nine municipalities of Mato Grosso, and parasitological tests did not detect T. cruzi on P. guentheri.
CONCLUSIONS: The distribution of this species in Brazil has bee

Triatominae are associated with various Brazilian habitats, including bird nests, animal burrows, and peridomestic structures. Despite extensive studies on triatomines in domiciliary environments in Ceará, Brazil, there has been limited research on their presence in the wild. This study focuses on the municipality of Morrinhos in Ceará, which is characterized by a Caatinga biome and riparian forests along the Acaraú River. During the study, a total of 185 nests of Pseudoseisura cristata were analyzed in rural locations and triatomines were collected in 26 nests from 12 different locations. A t

Host-seeking behaviour displayed by the haematophagous triatomine Rhodnius prolixus Stål, 1859 is influenced by different cues involving heat, moisture and odours. Concentrations of volatile odours present in human sweat and breath that activate, attract or non-attract triatomines were tested behaviourally with a double choice olfactometer in adults of R. prolixus. Attraction of a mixture of substances carried by a controlled air-stream was established and compared with volatiles from human extracts obtained by rubbing face, hands or feet. Volatiles from face and feet extracts showed a higher

The control of triatomine vectors depends almost exclusively on conventional insecticides. These compounds can, nevertheless, cause negative effects on environmental and human health as well as induce resistance in triatomines. Therefore, we need to look for more sustainable alternatives. Triatoma pallidipennis is one of the main chagasic vectors in Mexico. We evaluated the insecticidal effectiveness of two oils (neem and cinnamon), and two desiccants (potassium salts of fatty acids and diatomaceous earth), on 3rd instar nymphs of T. pallidipennis. The laboratory test involved direct exposure

BACKGROUND: The analysis of the chromosomal and genome evolution in organisms with holocentric chromosomes is restricted by the lack of primary constriction or centromere. An interesting group is the hemipteran subfamily Triatominae, vectors of Chagas disease, which affects around 6 to 7 million people worldwide. This group exhibits extensive variability in the number and chromosomal location of repeated sequences such as heterochromatin and ribosomal genes. This paper tries to reveal the significant differences of the repeated sequences among Triatoma species through the use of genomic DNA pr

Several insect species exist beyond their native habitats, some classified as invasive alien species (IAS), which can affect human health by carrying parasites and causing disease. These include vectors of vector-borne diseases, such as American trypanosomiasis, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, a major vector-borne disease primarily affecting the Americas. Mexico ranks third in the number of individuals infected with T. cruzi. Among the 35 Mexican triatomine species, Triatoma longipennis is notably significant. The presence of T. longipennis is reported for the first time in Southern
