Infections by Cryptosporidium spp. in aquatic mammals is a major concern due to the possibility of the waterborne transmission of oocysts. The aim of the present study was to report the occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. in Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus) and Amazonian manatees (Trichechus inunguis) from Brazil. Fecal samples were collected and processed using Kinyoun's method. Positive samples were also submitted to the direct immunofluorescence test. The results revealed the presence of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in 12.5% (17/136) of the material obtained from the Antillean manatee

African (Trichechus senegalenses), West Indian (T. manatus), WIM)], and the Amazonian manatees (T. inunguis, AMM). Whereas WIM inhabits both riverine and coastal systems in the western Atlantic, AMM is the only exclusively freshwater sirenian, endemic to the Amazon River Basin. The study of infectious agents is essential to species conservation, especially considering that both species are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List and as Endangered by the Brazilian Red List. The current knowledge about viral agents in sirenians is scarce. Herpesviruses and adenovirus are DNA viruses able t

Evidence from several sources supports a close phylogenetic relationship between elephants and sirenians. To explore whether this was reflected in similar placentation, we examined eight delivered placentae from the Amazonian manatee using light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. In addition, the fetal placental circulation was described by scanning electron microscopy of vessel casts. The manatee placenta was zonary and endotheliochorial, like that of the elephant. The interhaemal barrier comprised maternal endothelium, cytotrophoblasts and fetal endothelium. We found columnar trophoblast b

The manatee kidney is composed of several closely apposed lobes. These are formed by cortical folds (plicae corticales) that completely isolate the medullae, except where the medullae of adjacent lobes are partially fused. The cortex is continuous; its folds usually are separated, but only partially, by interlobar septa extending from the renal capsule. The cortex makes up approximately 57% of renal mass in adults and 68% in the calf. There are about 3 million glomeruli per kidney. The average is somewhat less than that expected of an adult eutherian of equal mass. The glomeruli, however, are

Meristic variation is often limited in serially homologous systems with high internal differentiation and high developmental modularity. The mammalian neck, an extreme example, has a fixed (at seven) count of diversely specialized segments. Imposition of the mammalian cervical constraint has been tentatively linked to the origin of the diaphragm, which is muscularized by cells that migrate from cervical somites during development. With six cervical vertebrae, the genus Trichechus (manatee) has apparently broken this constraint, although the mechanism of constraint escape is unknown. Hypotheses

Morphophysiological species researches are fundamental, and diagnostic imaging is an excellent technique, already used in wild animals, with great application, not invasive and provide real-time information of each body. Amazonian manatees are on the list of endangered animals classified in the vulnerable category and knowledge of the normal pattern of ultrasound anatomy of organs and tissues is important for the maintenance and well-being of captive specimens contributing to reintroduction actions. The objective of the study was to standardize the examination technique and describe the ultras

An adult male Amazonian manatee Trichechus inunguis under human care presented with 3 circular cutaneous lesions on the dorsal aspect of the rostrum and between the nostrils (plenum). Initially these lesions were superficial, hypopigmented, without warmth and non-painful. Microbiological cultures of skin swabs isolated Candida sp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and topical treatment with antiseptic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medication was instituted. This treatment strategy did not lead to any clinical improvement, and after 6 mo, the lesions progressed to a confluent abscess

The West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus), a sirenian species critically endangered throughout its range, possesses unique ocular adaptations to aquatic life, including reduced eyes, vascularized corneas and an anteriorly displaced lens. We aimed to document the first known case of congenital bilateral cataract associated with retinal dysplasia in a stranded manatee calf. We evaluated a manatee neonate calf, about 4 days old, kept in the Center for Rehabilitation of the National Center for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals on Itamaracá Island, Pernambuco State, Brazil. The hearing thresholds of two adult manatees were measured using a forced-choice two alternative paradigm and an up/down staircase psychometric method. This is the first behavioral audiogram measured for any Sirenian, as well as the first underwater infrasonic psychometric test with a marine mammal. Auditory thresholds were obtained from 0.4 to 46 kHz, and detection thresholds of possible vibrotactile origin were measured at 0.015-0.2 kHz. The U-shaped audiogram demonstrates an upper limit of functional hearing at 46 kHz with peak frequency sensitivity at 16 and 18 kHz (50 dB re: 1 microPa). T

Cryptosporidiosis is a zoonosis which can affect man and a wide range of domestic and wild animals, mainly immunodeficient individuals. The objective of this paper was reported the occurrence of a Cryptosporidium infection in Antillean manatee. After an unusual behavior of an Antillean manatee kept in captivity at the Centro Mamíferos Aquáticos, ICMBio--FMA, clinical examination and posterior fecal sampling was performed. Fecal samples were examined by the Kinyoun technique, Direct Immunofluorescence Test and also examined by 4',6'-Diamidino-2-Phenylindole (DAPI) staining. At the clinical exam

This study aimed to characterize the ocular biometry of the Trichechus manatus manatus applying B-mode ultrasonography across different age groups. Twenty-two animals were assessed employing a portable ultrasound device equipped with a linear transducer. Five ocular parameters were assessed: corneal thickness (CT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), axial lens length (ALL), vitreous chamber depth (VCD), and axial globe length (AGL). Data were statistically analyzed at a 5% significance level based on normality and variance. The mean values (cm) for the right eye of calves, juveniles, and adults wer

Vertebral column deviations, namely scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis and combinations thereof, are poorly characterized in marine mammals. Here we present the clinical history and the post-mortem pathological and computed tomography (CT) scan analysis results on a 52-year-old captive female Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) from Brazil. This animal had been kept at multiple small enclosures for most of its life. The main gross pathological and CT scan findings were severe thoracolumbar kyphoscoliosis that resulted in spinal canal stenosis and spinal cord compression. The adjacent tho

BACKGROUND: The Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris (Sirenia: Trichechidae), is the largest herbivorous marine mammal. Previously, components of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of the species have been described, but no comprehensive descriptions of the gross and microscopic anatomy existed. This study integrates function and structure of the entire Florida manatee GI tract.
METHODS: The GI tracts of several recently dead Florida manatees were examined from the following viewpoints: gross anatomical studies of preserved and unpreserved specimens, histology and histochemistry, and

OBJECTIVE: To describe results of analysis of free-catch urine samples collected from Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) under human care in the Caribbean.
ANIMALS: 32 Antillean manatees in 5 Caribbean oceanaria and rescue centers.
PROCEDURES: Urine samples were obtained by opportunistic free catch during physical examination or through the use of operant conditioning procedures. Urinalyses consisted of macro- and microscopic evaluations, biochemical analyses with test strips, and refractometry. Results were compared for manatees grouped on the basis of age, sex, and habitat.

Necropsies were conducted on 4 Antillean manatees Trichechus manatus manatus that were stranded in single events on the coastal beaches of Puerto Rico from August 2010 to August 2011. Three manatees were emaciated and the gastrointestinal tracts were devoid of digesta. Microscopically, all manatees had severe widespread inflammatory lesions of the gastrointestinal tract and heart with intralesional tachyzoites consistent with Toxoplasma gondii identified by histological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical techniques. The gastrointestinal lesions included severe, multifocal to diffuse, chr

Two West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus spp.) were reported with severe emaciation. One animal was a Florida manatee from the Everglades; the other was an Antillean manatee from Cuba. On necropsy, both animals had nephrolithiasis, pyelonephritis, and moderate to severe renomegaly. Histopathology revealed multifocal to diffuse pyelonephritis, interstitial nephritis, and nephrocalcinosis. The stones were analyzed and consisted primarily of calcium carbonate. Serum chemistry values for the Florida animal revealed no renal abnormalities. The mechanism of calculus formation remains unclear in

During necropsy of two manatees, masses in multiple organs including liver and spleen were identified. They were composed of neoplastic round to spindle-shaped cells, positive for vimentin, Iba-1, lysozyme, and Mac387, consistent with histiocytic sarcoma. One manatee also had an undifferentiated sarcoma that may have arisen from the histiocytic sarcoma.

Morphological variation was studied in the adult cladorchiid trematodes Chiorchis spp. (Trematoda: Digenea), that parasitize the intestinal tract and caecum of the American manatee (Trichechus manatus). Specimens were collected from 22 manatees between 1980 and 1998 in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Florida. We found statistically significant differences in analyses of variance in 31 morphological measurements from 284 specimens across different geographical regions, consistent with the existence of two species. Some specimens from Florida corresponded to the description fo

The West Indian manatee Trichechus manatus is divided into 2 subspecies: the Antillean (T. m. manatus) and Florida (T. m. latirostris) manatees. This study reports sample prevalence of manatee parasites from populations of these 2 subspecies in different geographical locations. Although necropsy is a valuable diagnostic tool for parasite infections, the need for antemortem diagnostic techniques is important. Fecal samples collected during necropsies of Antillean manatees (n = 3) in Puerto Rico and Florida manatees (n = 10) in Crystal River, Florida, as well as from live-captured Florida manate
