Anti-ulcer effects of Trichosanthes fruits.

Anti-ulcer activities of fruits of Trichosanthes kirilowii Maximowicz var. japonica Kitamura (50% ethanolic extract, TKE) were investigated in rats. TKE, at doses of 100-1000 mg/kg, showed potent protection against experimental gastric lesions, namely, those induced by water-immersion, histamine, serotonin, HCl.ethanol, 0.6 N HCl, 0.2 N NaOH, 35% NaCl, and Shay' ulcer and acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer. At doses of 500-1000 mg/kg, TKE decreased the gastric secretion and acid output in pylorus-ligation (for 7 h), but 100 mg/kg of TKE had no influence on the gastric secretion. On the other ha

Semiochemicals from Trichosanthes anguina (Cucurbitaceae) plants influence behavior in Diaphania indica.

BACKGROUND: First to third instars of Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) feed on the lower surface of leaves, while fourth and fifth instars gregariously consume leaves of Trichosanthes anguina L. After defoliating, the caterpillar also attacks flowers and fruits of the plant and finally, results in loss of crop yield. Therefore, behavioral responses of D. indica adults were investigated to volatiles from undamaged (UD), insect-damaged (ID, plants after feeding by D. indica larvae) and jasmonic acid (JA) treated T. anguina plants. RESULTS: Females showed attraction to volati

Trichosanthes kirilowii Maximowicz attenuates dexamethasone induced atrophy in C2C12 myotubes through a Sirtuin 1 associated mechanism.

Glucocorticoids such as dexamethasone (DEX) are commonly used clinically but can induce skeletal muscle atrophy with prolonged or high-dose exposure. Trichosanthes kirilowii Maximowicz (TK), a traditional medicinal herb, has known pharmacological effects, but its impact on muscle atrophy remains unclear. This study investigated the anti-atrophic potential of TK in DEX-induced muscle atrophy models. In C2C12 cells, TK improved cell viability and restored myotube diameter and number, downregulated atrophy markers MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1, and upregulated myogenic markers MyoD, MyoG, and MHC. TK also

Trichosanthes kirilowii lectin alleviates diabetic nephropathy by inhibiting the LOX1/NF-κB/caspase-9 signaling pathway.

Trichosanthes kirilowii lectin (TKL) has been reported to exert hypoglycemic effects in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. However, there is no evidence showing that it helps to prevent diabetic nephropathy (DN). We used a high glucose (HG)-induced HK-2 cell model and a streptozocin (STZ)-induced Wistar rat model to investigate the effects of TKL on DN, as well as the mechanisms for those effects. Our results showed that TKL significantly increased the viability of HG-treated HK-2 cells and inhibited cell apoptosis. In vivo experiments demonstrated that TKL attenuated STZ-induced histopathological
