Elevated concentration of homocysteine (Hcy) in human plasma, defined as hyperhomocysteinemia has been correlated with some diseases, such as cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and kidney disorders. Homocysteine occurs in human plasma in several forms, including the most reactive form of Hcy - its cyclic thioester - homocysteine thiolactone (HTL), which represents up to 0.29% of plasma total Hcy. It is suggested that Hcy and HTL may also act as oxidants, but various polyphenolic antioxidants are able to inhibit the oxidative damage induced by Hcy or HTL. The aim of our present study was to inv

We examined the prevention effect of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) sprout on metabolic syndrome using a high-carbohydrate and high-fat diet (Western diet; WD)-induced male C57BL/6J obese model mouse. Red clover sprout-lyophilized powder (RC) contained 3.5 mg/g dry-weight of formononetin as a major phenolic compound, as analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. Supplementation of 0.3% (w/w) RC in a WD (WD+RC) showed an anti-obesity effect and ameliorated lipid metabolism in the obese model mice. Additionally, fasting plasma glucose levels were significantly reduced in the WD+RC g

CASE HISTORY: In April and June of 2024, two outbreaks of photosensitisation occurred in a herd of 354 beef cows and calves in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Both outbreaks occurred in the same paddock, where red clover (Trifolium pratense) was the dominant pasture species, combined with tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus, previously Festuca arundinacea), white clover (T. repens), bird's foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne).
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Signs of head tilt, restlessness, tail swishing, and searching behaviour for shade and water were first obs

Pterocarpans are structurally complex defense compounds produced by legumes (Fabaceae). They are commonly associated with antimicrobial activity and thought to be synthesized de novo or accumulated in response to microbial pathogens. (-)-Maackiain is a lineage-specific pterocarpan detected in some legumes, including red clover (Trifolium pratense). The biosynthesis of (-)-maackiain involves the formation of a distinctive methylenedioxy bridge to convert calycosin to pseudobaptigenin, which is predicted to be catalyzed by a cytochrome P450. We integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic datasets

Coccidiosis, caused by a protozoan parasite of the genus Eimeria, is one of the most severe contagious parasite diseases affecting the poultry industry worldwide. Using phytogenics to prevent chicken coccidiosis is a strategy aimed at combating the increasing issue of drug-resistant strains of Eimeria spp. This study demonstrates the anticoccidial activities of a medicinal herb, Trifolium pratense (TP) powder, and its ethanolic extract (designated TPE) against Eimeria spp. TPE exhibited significant suppressive activity against E. maxima oocyst sporulation and E. tenella sporozoite invasion and

Adaptive differentiation between populations is often proposed to be the product of multiple interacting selective pressures, although empirical support for this is scarce. In white clover, populations show adaptive differentiation in frequencies of cyanogenesis, the ability to produce hydrogen cyanide after tissue damage. This polymorphism arises through independently segregating polymorphisms for the presence/absence of two required cyanogenic components, cyanogenic glucosides and their hydrolysing enzyme. White clover populations worldwide have evolved a series of recurrent, climate-associa

Trifolium glanduliferum Boiss. was resistant to redlegged earth mite, Halotydeus destructor Tucker (Acari: Penthaleidae), feeding compared with Trifolium subterraneum L. Extracts from T. glanduliferum leaves, obtained with dichloromethane and methanol, acted as feeding deterrents to the redlegged earth mite. Bioassay-directed fractionation of the extracts led to the isolation of several metabolites, coumarin, alpha-and beta-ionone, linalool, medicarpin, that were shown to be deterrent in laboratory experiments. The compounds contributing to the defense of T. glanduliferum were different from t

OBJECTIVE: Red clover (Trifolium pratense) extracts are becoming increasingly popular, primarily for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. Although promoted as a phytoestrogen source similar to soybeans, red clover is a medicinal herb, not a food, and traditionally has not been used long-term. We sought to review the scientific literature for this newer use.
DESIGN: Medline was searched for controlled trials of red clover (Trifolium pratense), and other sources were searched for other studies and abstracts.
RESULTS: Two double-blind placebo-controlled trials found no beneficial effects of re

In recent years, cases of botulism in cattle and other farm animals and also in farmers increased dramatically. It was proposed, that these cases could be affiliated with the spreading of compost or other organic manures contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores on farm land. Thus, soils and fodder plants and finally farm animals could be contaminated. Therefore, the colonization behavior and interaction of the botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT D) producing C. botulinum strain 2301 and the non-toxin producing Clostridium sporogenes strain 1739 were investigated on clover (Trifolium repens) in a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increasing soil salinity poses a major plant stress in agro-ecosystems worldwide. Surprisingly little is known about the quantitative effect of elevated salinity on secondary metabolism in many agricultural crops. Such salt-mediated changes in defence-associated compounds may significantly alter the quality of food and forage plants as well as their resistance against pests. In the present study, the effects of soil salinity on cyanogenesis in white clover (Trifolium repens), a forage crop of international importance, are analysed.
METHODS: Experimental clonal plants were

Understanding the evolution of plant defenses against herbivores requires identifying the benefits and costs of defense. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the benefits and costs of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) defense against herbivory on white clover (Trifolium repens) are temperature dependent. We first tested how temperature affected HCN production in vitro, and then examined how temperature influenced the efficacy of HCN defense of T. repens against a generalist slug (Deroceras reticulatum) herbivore using no-choice and choice feeding trial assays. To understand how temperature affected the co

Climate change is a major factor shaping the distribution of plant species. A well-documented response consequence is the upward shift of plant species to higher elevations as they track their thermal niches. However, plants migrating upward face complex environmental changes shaped by multiple interacting factors. Among these, reduced air pressure remains relatively understudied, its effects are often confounded with other covarying parameters. This study investigated the direct impact of reduced air pressure on the eco-physiological responses of two plant species (Hieracium pilosella L. and

The aim was to provide the insight into the biology of C. albicans influenced by undescribed yet properties of saponin-rich (80%-98%) fractions (SAPFs), isolated from extracts of Trifolium alexandrinum, T. incarnatum, T. resupinatum var. resupinatum aerial parts. Their concentrations below 0.5 mg/mL were arbitrarily considered as subMICs for C. albicans ATCC 10231 and were further used. SAPFs affected yeast enzymatic activity, lowered tolerance to the oxidative stress, to the osmotic stress and to the action of the cell wall disrupting agent. In their presence, germ tubes formation was signifi

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of Trifolium purpureum against Escherichia coli.
METHODS: T. purpureum Loisel. was collected from the mountains of western Lebanon. The plant parts were then extracted by maceration in 70% ethanol and water. The plant fractions were screened for secondary metabolite classes. The antibacterial activity of the extracts was determined using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Antibiofilm activity was assessed using a colorimetric method, and the effects of

Global food security in a changing climate depends on both the nutritive value of staple crops as well as their yields. Here, we examined the direct effect of atmospheric carbon dioxide on the toxicity of the important pasture crop, Trifolium repens L. (clover). Shoots of T. repens contain cyanogenic glycosides that break down to release toxic hydrogen cyanide when damaged. The ability of animals to tolerate cyanogenic compounds is dependent, in part, on their overall protein intake. We grew T. repens communities at ambient and approximately twice-ambient CO(2) in a controlled environment gree

Some species of clover are reported to have beneficial effects in human diseases. However, little is known about the activity of the forage plant Trifolium repens, or white clover, which has been recently found to exert a hepatoprotective action. Scientific interest is increasingly focused on identifying new drugs, especially natural products and their derivatives, to treat human diseases including cancer. We analyzed the anticancer effects of T. repens in several cancer cell lines. The phytochemical components of T. repens were first extracted in a methanol solution and then separated into fo

While mining provides critical raw materials for modern infrastructure and the energy transition, it leaves behind severe environmental damages, such as soil mercury (Hg) contamination. In the present study, we present the first study evaluating the relationship of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus arhizus with Trifolium repens (white clover) as a novel nature-based mycoremediation strategy for mercury-stressed soils. Through a controlled 2 × 2 factorial experiment over six months, we demonstrate that P. arhizus significantly enhances both plant biomass and heavy-metal tolerance. Inoculati

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L., Fabaceae) botanical dietary supplements have received much attention recently for their potential use in the treatment of menopause symptoms, maintenance/improvement of bone and cardiovascular health, and reported benign effects on the breast and endometrium. Literature searches of four computerized databases were run to identify clinical studies of red clover botanical dietary supplements. The manufacturer of the red clover products used in the majority of the studies was contacted for unpublished information and/or clarification regarding the chemical conte
