Effects of lesions to the trigeminal motor nucleus on temporomandibular disc morphology.

Stereotaxic surgery was performed on the trigeminal motor nuclei (TMNu) of 47 actively growing rats in order to test the effects of neuromuscular alterations on TMJ disc morphology. Lesioned animals received a small electrolytic lesion to their left-side TMNu, while shams had their TMNu stimulated without an actual lesion being produced. Both lesioned and sham-lesioned animals demonstrated significant (P less than 0.05; P less than 0.01) morphological alterations of their discs 28, 56, and 84 days postoperatively. Data indicated that (i) TMNu lesions do indeed affect disc morphology, and (ii)

Noradrenergic facilitation of motor neurons: localization of adrenergic receptors in neurons and nonneuronal cells in the trigeminal motor nucleus.

Both alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors (ARs) are involved in the facilitation of the monosynaptic jaw-closing reflex in the trigeminal motor nucleus (MoV) caused by norepinephrine (NE). The amplitude of muscle spindle afferent-evoked EPSPs in masseter motor neurons is 65% greater when noradrenergic axons to the motor nucleus are concomitantly activated and seems to be due to a presynaptic mechanism (Vornov, J. J., and J. Sutin. 1986. J. Neurosci. 6: 30-37). To determine the subtypes of ARs located on motor neurons and other cells, the cytotoxic lectin Ricin communis was injected into the ma

Pontine infarction in a dog with unilateral involvement of the trigeminal motor nucleus and pyramidal tract.

An unusual case of unilateral trigeminal neuronopathy in a dog is reported, in which the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve and the ipsilateral corticospinal tract were destroyed, apparently by a cerebrovascular accident (stroke). Hemiplegia did not occur. Neuropathological changes are described, including remyelination by Schwann cells in the central nervous system. The case illustrates the importance of central nervous system post-mortem examination when establishing causes of cranial nerve paralysis.

Morphologic alterations in Macaca mulatta following destruction of the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve.

In two adolescent male Macaca mulatta monkeys, small unilateral electrolytic lesions were produced in the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve. The side contralateral to the muscle paralysis served as the control side. The animals were killed 130 and 300 days postoperatively. One animal (animal A) was prepared as a dry skull preparation. Alterations in craniofacial form were noted clinically in both animals and included paralysis and atrophy of the muscles of mastication on the lesion side and mandibular asymmetry. In animal A (300 days postoperative survival), alterations in form included de

Alterations in the facial skeleton of the guinea pig following a lesion of the trigeminal motor nucleus.

In thirty-three of sixty-six guinea pigs of the Topeka strain small, unilateral, electrolytic lesions were produced in the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve. Unoperated animals and the side contralateral to the muscle paralysis served as controls. Lesions were created when animals were 15 days or 75 days of age, and the animals were killed 15, 30, 45, or 60 days postoperatively. Each animal was subjected to dry skull preparations or radiographic and histologic techniques. Alterations in craniofacial form were noted in both the growing animals and the animals with little growth remaining. A

Craniofacial alterations following electrolytic lesions of the trigeminal motor nucleus in actively growing rats.

The objective of this study was to define further the role of the trigeminal motor nucleus (TMNu) in the postnatal ontogeny of the mammalian craniofacial skeleton. To that end, 42 male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent stereotaxic surgery at 40 days of age; 21 received small electrolytic lesions to their left-side TMNu (lesioned group) while 21 had TMNu stimulation with no actual electrolytic lesion produced (sham group). Seven rats from each group were killed at 28, 56, and 84 days postoperative to analyze trigeminal motoneuron (TMNe) count, masticatory muscle weight, and osteological growth vect

Excitatory effects of hypocretin-1 (orexin-A) in the trigeminal motor nucleus are reversed by NMDA antagonism.

Hypocretin-1 and -2 (Hcrt-1 and -2, also called orexin-A and -B) are newly identified neuropeptides synthesized by hypothalamic neurons. Defects in the Hcrt system underlie the sleep disorder narcolepsy, which is characterized by sleep fragmentation and the involuntary loss of muscle tone called cataplexy. Hcrt neurons project to multiple brain regions including cranial and spinal motor nuclei. In vitro studies suggest that Hcrt application can modulate presynaptic glutamate release. Together these observations suggest that Hcrt can affect motor output and that glutamatergic processes may be i

The motor trigeminal nucleus of the rat: analysis of neuronal structure and the synaptic organization of noradrenergic afferents.

The organization of the rat motor trigeminal nucleus (MTN) and the morphology of noradrenergic afferents terminating in this cranial motor nucleus were analyzed with light and transmission electron microscopy. Two morphologically distinct types of neurons are present in the MTN. Large multipolar neurons are the most prevalent cell type and are distributed uniformly throughout the nucleus. The morphology of these cells is identical to that of motor neurons described previously in both the brainstem and spinal cord. The neurons are characterized ultrastructurally by a light, organelle-rich cytop

Neurotoxic effects of p-chloroamphetamine on the serotoninergic innervation of the trigeminal motor nucleus: a retrograde transport study.

The rat forebrain receives projections from both dorsal and median raphe nuclei. It has recently been shown that serotoninergic axons arising from the dorsal raphe nucleus, but not those from the median raphe nucleus, degenerate following systemic administration of p-chloroamphetamine (PCA). The present study was conducted to determine (i) whether the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve is innervated by overlapping projections from multiple serotonin cell groups and (ii) whether a particular subset of serotoninergic axon terminals in the trigeminal motor nucleus are sensitive to the neurotox

Masticatory movements and EMG activity following electrolytic lesions of the trigeminal motor nucleus in growing guinea pigs.

Unilateral electrolytic lesions were produced in the left trigeminal motor nucleus (TMN) of six guinea pigs at 49 days of age. Masticatory mandibular movement and EMG data were collected prior to lesioning and at 4 and 12 days postlesion. After the animals were killed 60 days postlesion, dissection and maceration revealed muscular atrophy and craniofacial asymmetries on the lesion side. Analyses of prelesion and postlesion mandibular movement and EMG data indicated significant (p less than 0.05; p less than 0.01) changes in chew cycle durations, dimensions, and EMG activity patterns. Identification of central amygdala and trigeminal motor nucleus connectivity in humans: An ultra-high field diffusion MRI study.

The neuroanatomical circuitry of jaw muscles has been mostly explored in non-human animals. A recent rodent study revealed a novel circuit from the central amygdala (CeA) to the trigeminal motor nucleus (5M), which controls biting attacks. This circuit has yet to be delineated in humans. Ultra-high diffusion-weighted imaging data from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) allow in vivo delineation of circuits identified in other species-for example, the CeA-5M pathway-in humans. We hypothesized that the CeA-5M circuit could be resolved in humans at both 7 and 3 T. We performed probabilistic tract

Dense transient receptor potential cation channel, vanilloid family, type 2 (TRPV2) immunoreactivity defines a subset of motoneurons in the dorsal lateral nucleus of the spinal cord, the nucleus ambiguus and the trigeminal motor nucleus in rat.

The transient receptor potential cation channel, vanilloid family, type 2 (TRPV2) is a member of the TRPV family of proteins and is a homologue of the capsaicin/vanilloid receptor (transient receptor potential cation channel, vanilloid family, type 1, TRPV1). Like TRPV1, TRPV2 is expressed in a subset of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons that project to superficial laminae of the spinal cord dorsal horn. Because noxious heat (>52 degrees C) activates TRPV2 in transfected cells this channel has been implicated in the processing of high intensity thermal pain messages in vivo. In contrast to TRP

Exteroceptive and proprioceptive afferents of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L.).

Central pathways converging upon the trigeminofacial motor nuclei of the mallard were studied in order to elucidate neuroanatomically the presumed influence of primary sensory trigeminal afferents upon jaw muscle activity. The techniques used included the Fink-Heimer I method after lesions, and axonal transport labeling following injections of 3H-leucine or of HRP for retrograde identification of the neurons of origin. A general description is given of the trigeminofacial motor complex. Jaw closer muscles are innervated by trigeminal motor neurons, and facial motor neurons innervate the jaw de

Neural pathway for aggressive display in Betta splendens: midbrain and hindbrain control of gill-cover erection behavior.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used to identify parts of the presumptive neural pathway for gill cover erection, a behavioral display pattern performed by Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) during aggressive interactions. Motor, motor integration and sensory areas were identified in the medulla and mesencephalon. Motor neurons of the dilator operculi muscle, the effector muscle for gill cover erection, are located in the lateral and medial parts of the caudal trigeminal motor nucleus. Iontophoretic injections of HRP into the lateral trigeminal motor nucleus resulted in labeled cell bodi

Central projections of the mesencephalic nucleus of the fifth nerve: an autoradiographic study.

Projections of cells of the mesencephalic nucleus of the fifth nerve (Mes V) to brainstem structures in the cat were studied by labelling Mes V cells with tritiated leucine. Before the leucine injections were made, however, large kainic acid lesions were produced in the vicinity of Mes V cells because these neurons are resistant to being killed or injured by this neurotoxin. Thus Mes V cells were selectively labelled by the leucine even though they are scattered among many other neurons. Leucine injections near Mes V cells located in the mesencephalon, which are primarily the somata of jaw mus

Non-motoneurons in the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei projecting to the cerebellar flocculus in the cat. A fluorescent double-labelling and WGA-HRP study.

The cerebellar projection from the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei was studied in the cat by means of retrograde axonal transport of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase and fluorescent tracers. The feline facial nucleus was cytoarchitectonically subdivided into ventromedial, ventrolateral, lateral, dorsal, intermediate and medial divisions (see Papez 1927), and the motor trigeminal nucleus into medial, ventral, intermediate, lateral and dorsal divisions. The neurons in the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei were classified as small (ovoid to round cells with a maximum diameter of t

A quantitative histological study of neuroglial number in the retrofacial, facial and trigeminal motor nuclei in the ageing mouse brain.

The number of neuroglia was estimated in the retrofacial, facial and trigeminal motor nuclei of the mouse brain at 6, 25, 28 and 31 months of age. There was no statistically significant variation in neuroglial number in either the facial or trigeminal motor nuclei despite changes in neuron number. There was a decrease in the number of neuroglia in the retrofacial nucleus between 25 and 28 months which was slightly greater than the decrease in neuronal number, followed by a small increase in neuroglial number between 28 and 31 months of age. The glia-to-neuron ratio in the facial and trigeminal
