SCN2B in the Rat Trigeminal Ganglion and Trigeminal Sensory Nuclei.

The beta-2 subunit of the mammalian brain voltage-gated sodium channel (SCN2B) was examined in the rat trigeminal ganglion (TG) and trigeminal sensory nuclei. In the TG, 42.6 % of sensory neurons were immunoreactive (IR) for SCN2B. These neurons had various cell body sizes. In facial skins and oral mucosae, corpuscular nerve endings contained SCN2B-immunoreactivity. SCN2B-IR nerve fibers formed nerve plexuses beneath taste buds in the tongue and incisive papilla. However, SCN2B-IR free nerve endings were rare in cutaneous and mucosal epithelia. Tooth pulps, muscle spindles and major salivary g

Osteopontin-immunoreactivity in the rat trigeminal ganglion and trigeminal sensory nuclei.

Osteopontin-immunoreactivity (OPN-ir) was examined in the oro-facial tissues and trigeminal sensory nuclei (principal sensory nucleus and spinal trigeminal nucleus) to ascertain the peripheral ending and central projection of OPN-containing primary sensory neurons in the trigeminal ganglion (TG). No staining was observed using mouse monoclonal anti-OPN antibody preabsorbed with recombinant mature OPN. OPN-immunoreactive (ir) peripheral endings were classified into two types: encapsulated and unencapsulated types. Unencapsulated endings were subdivided into two types: simple and complex types.

Cerebellar afferents from the trigeminal sensory nuclei in the cat.

The cerebellar afferent projection from the trigeminal sensory nuclei (TSN) was studied by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The projection is almost exclusively ipsilateral. Three cortical regions, viz., the intermediate-lateral part of lobulus simplex with the adjacent area of lobule V, the rostralmost folia of the paramedian lobule with the surrounding parts of crus I and II, and lobule IX, especially its rostral two folia, are the main targets for the cerebellar afferent fibres. A few fibres reach also the other cerebellar regions, as shown in Fig. 3. Mo

Expression of vanilloid receptor TRPV1 in the rat trigeminal sensory nuclei.

Little is known about the central projection patterns of trigeminal afferent neurons expressing the vanilloid receptor TRPV1 and their coexpression of neuromodulatory peptides. To address these issues, we examined the distribution of TRPV1-positive neurons in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) and trigeminal sensory nuclei principalis (Vp), oralis (Vo), interpolaris (Vi), and caudalis (Vc) in the rat via light and electron microscopy. In addition, we studied the colocalization of TRPV1-positive neurons with substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) via confocal microscopy. In TG, o

Organisation of reciprocal connections between trigeminal and vestibular nuclei in the rat.

In order to study the connection patterns between the sensory trigeminal and the vestibular nuclei (VN), injections of anterogradely and/or retrogradely transported neuronal tracers were made in the rat. Trigeminal injections resulted in anterogradely labelled fibres, with an ipsilateral preponderance, within the VN: in the ventrolateral part of the inferior nucleus (IVN), in the lateral part of the medial nucleus (MVN), in the lateral nucleus (LVN) with a higher density in its ventral half, and in the superior nucleus (SVN), more in the periphery than in the central part. Moderate trigeminal

The accessory motor nuclei of the trigeminal, facial, and abducens nerves in the rat.

The cobalt labeling technique was applied to the trigeminal, facial, and abducens roots in order to investigate the location and morphology of motoneurons of the main and accessory motor nuclei of these cranial nerves in the rat. On the basis of soma-dendritic morphology, axonal trajectory, and tegmental location, three different accessory nuclei were distinguished in the brainstem. Neurons of the accessory nuclei of V and VII form a common club-shaped nucleus extending between the main motor nuclei of V and VII. The dendritic tree of these neurons is oriented in the dorsoventral direction and

Membrane current-based mechanisms for excitability transitions in neurons of the rat mesencephalic trigeminal nuclei.

Since Hodgkin's first description of three classes of excitability in crustacean nerve axons (1948), theoretical studies have used mathematical models to demonstrate that small changes in the parameters describing ionic currents could result in transitions between classes of membrane excitability. However, these transitions have rarely been investigated experimentally. Here, we show that states of excitability in rat mesencephalic V (Mes V) neurons can be classified into three groups, with manipulations of the 4-aminopyridine sensitive K(+) current (I(4-AP)) or persistent Na(+) current (I(NaP)

Facial nerve injury induces facilitation of responses in both trigeminal and facial nuclei of rat.

A study was made of the effects of facial nerve transection on trigeminal stimulation- evoked field potentials in the principal trigeminal (Pr5) and facial nuclei (7) in rats. Although the transected branch of the facial nerve contains pure motoric efferents, it resulted in enhanced responses in both Pr5 and 7. These electrophysiological results suggest a functional circuitry involving the whiskers, trigeminal nerve, Pr5 and 7 and the facial nerve as efferent. The disconnection (opening) of this loop results in enhanced responsiveness of the neurons in both Pr5 and 7.

A convergent input from nasal receptors and the larynx to the rostral sensory trigeminal nuclei of the cat.

1. Extracellular recordings were made from ninety-one neurones in the vicinity of the rostral trigeminal nucleus in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. 2. Sixty-two neurones within this area were activated by electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral superior laryngeal nerve (s.l.n.). Only two of the twenty-one neurones tested had an additional input from the contralateral s.l.n. 3. Fifty of these sixty-two neurones were also activated synaptically by light mechanical stimulation of the ipsilateral nasal cavity and in the eight neurones tested electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral nostril evoke

The ascending projections of the nuclei of the descending trigeminal tract (nTTD) in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

In our traditional view of the avian somatosensory system, input from the beak and head reaches the telencephalon via a disynaptic pathway, involving projections from the principal sensory nucleus (PrV) directly to nucleus basorostralis (previously called nucleus basalis), whereas input from the rest of the body follows a trisynatic pathway similar to that in mammals, involving projections from the dorsal column nuclei to the thalamus, and thence to somatosensory wulst. However, the role of the nuclei of the descending trigeminal tract (nTTD) in this scenario is unclear, partly because their a

Topographic organization of spinal and trigeminal somatosensory pathways to the rat parabrachial and Kölliker-Fuse nuclei.

We examined the organization of somatosensory projections to the parabrachial (PB) and Kölliker-Fuse (KF) nuclei by employing the retrograde and anterograde axonal transport of Fluorogold and Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin (PHA-L), respectively. Small PHA-L injections were made into different parts of the spinal trigeminal complex, including the paratrigeminal nucleus, and into different segments and laminae of the spinal dorsal horn. The subnuclear distribution of axonal labeling in the PB and KF was mapped with a camera lucida. Our results show that the somatosensory input to the PB and

The sites of origin of serotoninergic afferent fibers in the trigeminal motor, facial, and hypoglossal nuclei in the rat.

The sites of origin of serotoninergic afferents in the trigeminal motor (Vm), facial (VII), and hypoglossal nuclei (XII) were studied in the rat by fluorescent retrograde labeling with Fluoro-Gold, in combination with immunofluorescence histochemistry for serotonin (5-HT). The results indicated: (1) The nucleus raphe magnus, nucleus raphe pallidus, and nucleus raphe obscurus contained 5-HT neurons projecting to the Vm, VII or XII. (2) The nucleus raphe dorsalis sends 5-HT fibres to the Vm and VII, but not to the XII. (3) The gigantocellular reticular nucleus pars alpha contained 5-HT neurons p

Exteroceptive and proprioceptive afferents of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L.).

Central pathways converging upon the trigeminofacial motor nuclei of the mallard were studied in order to elucidate neuroanatomically the presumed influence of primary sensory trigeminal afferents upon jaw muscle activity. The techniques used included the Fink-Heimer I method after lesions, and axonal transport labeling following injections of 3H-leucine or of HRP for retrograde identification of the neurons of origin. A general description is given of the trigeminofacial motor complex. Jaw closer muscles are innervated by trigeminal motor neurons, and facial motor neurons innervate the jaw de

Neuronal vacuolation of the trigeminal nuclei in goats caused by ingestion of Prosopis juliflora pods (mesquite beans).

Three groups of 6 goats each were fed a ration containing 30, 60, or 90%, on a dry matter base, of Prosopis juliflora pods. A control group of 4 goats ingested only the basic ration. Two hundred and ten days after the start of the experiment 3 goats that ingested 60% pods in and 4 that ingested 90% had mandibular tremors, mainly during chewing. All animals were killed after 270 d of ingestion. No gross lesions were observed. Histologic lesions were characterized by fine vacuolation of the pericaryon of neurons from the trigeminal nuclei. Occasionally neurons of the oculomotor nuclei were also

A quantitative histological study of neuroglial number in the retrofacial, facial and trigeminal motor nuclei in the ageing mouse brain.

The number of neuroglia was estimated in the retrofacial, facial and trigeminal motor nuclei of the mouse brain at 6, 25, 28 and 31 months of age. There was no statistically significant variation in neuroglial number in either the facial or trigeminal motor nuclei despite changes in neuron number. There was a decrease in the number of neuroglia in the retrofacial nucleus between 25 and 28 months which was slightly greater than the decrease in neuronal number, followed by a small increase in neuroglial number between 28 and 31 months of age. The glia-to-neuron ratio in the facial and trigeminal

Properties of different functional types of neurones in the cat's rostral trigeminal nuclei responding to sinus hair stimulation.

1. Properties of neurones in the trigeminal nuclei principalis and oralis responding to movements of facial sinus hairs were studied in cats anaesthetized by I. V. infusion of pentobarbitone.2. Using electrophysiological methods trigeminal neurones were classified into primary afferent fibres, trigeminothalamic relay neurones, interneurones and other unspecified higher order neurones.3. When receptive fields of synaptically activated neurones were compared with those of primary afferent fibres, an often extensive convergence from first order on to higher order neurones was established. Viscerotopic representation of the upper alimentary tract in the rat: sensory ganglia and nuclei of the solitary and spinal trigeminal tracts.

The aim of this study was to map the viscerotopic representation of the upper alimentary tract in the sensory ganglia of the IXth and Xth cranial nerves and in the subnuclei of the solitary and spinal trigeminal tracts. Therefore, in 172 rats 0.5-65 microliters of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), wheat germ agglutinin-HRP, or cholera toxin-HRP were injected into the trunks and major branches of the IXth and Xth cranial nerves as well as into the musculature and mucosa of different levels of the upper alimentary and respiratory tracts. Rats subjected to chronic-intermittent hypoxia have increased density of noradrenergic terminals in the trigeminal sensory and motor nuclei.

Rodents subjected to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) are used to investigate the mechanisms underlying the consequences of the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome. Following CIH, rats have an increased density of noradrenergic terminals in the hypoglossal motor nucleus which innervates lingual muscles that protect the upper airway from collapse in OSA patients. Here, we investigated whether such an increase also occurs in other brainstem nuclei. Six pairs of male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to CIH or sham treatment for 10h/day for 35 days, with O(2) level oscillating between 24% and

Melanosis of the choroid plexus, ependyma, subependymal neuroglia, and dentate and trigeminal motor nuclei: observations on the choroidal and ependymal cilia.

Melanosis of the choroid plexus, ependyma, subependymal neuroglia of the fourth ventricle, and dentate and trigeminal motor nuclei was found in a 50-year-old man who died with cor pulmonale, hypertensive cardiovascular disease, and intracerebral hemorrhage. This case is the first known example of melanosis not associated with neurocutaneous melanosis to involve multiple structures of the brain. Nonenzymatic conversion of lipofuscin into melanin is suggested as the mechanism of the melanosis. Cilia of the choroidal epithelium and ependyma were identified in this case, despite a long delay in po
