Two main types of myalgia that are not inflammatory are fibromyalgia (FB) and myofasical pain (MFP). In both of them during diagnosing tender points (characteristic for fibromyalgia) and trigger points (MTrP--characteristic for myofasical pain) are of key importance. A great degree of similarity together with the inability to differentiate between those points result in wrong diagnosis and, as a consequence, failure of therapy. Additional difficulties are caused by the lack of unity in nomenclature, as in literature the term tender point and trigger point are used interchangeably. Moreover, so

RATIONALE: Muscle pain can be elicited by any irritation of the nociceptors in the muscle or central sensitization in the central nervous system. The most frequently described muscle pain syndromes are myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia syndrome. Myofascial pain syndrome has a more localized manifestation, the trigger points.
OBJECTIVE: If there is a correlation between the clinical findings, the ultrasound examination and the thermal pattern of trigger points exist.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The presence of trigger points can be identified by using clinical criteria. An ultrasound examina

BACKGROUND: Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is regarded as an extremely common clinical disorder, but is not fully understood. Shoulder pain has a lifetime prevalence of up to 66.7% in the general population, and pain due to Myofascial Trigger Points (MTPs) located in the deltoid muscle is fairly common. Analyses of the correlations between innervation patterns and trigger point locations have been successful in other muscular groups.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to provide a mathematical analysis of the entry points of the axillary nerve into the deltoid muscle and correlate the

In dogs, muscles make up 44%-57% of total body weight and can serve as source of both pain and dysfunction when myofascial trigger points are present. However, rarely is muscle mentioned as a generator of pain in dogs, and even less mentioned is muscle dysfunction. The veterinary practitioner with interest in pain management, rehabilitation, orthopedics, and sports medicine must be familiar with the characteristics, etiology, and precipitating factors of myofascial trigger points. Additionally, the development of examination and treatment skill is needed to effectively manage myofascial trigge

METHOD: Temporal muscles of 14 adult cadavers were studied. The muscle bellies were divided into six areas, three superior (1.2 and 3) and three inferior areas (4, 5, and 6) lower, according to a Cartesian plane to analyze and describe the entry points of the branches of the deep temporal nerves into the muscle. The branching distribution was analyzed using Poisson log-linear tests with Bonferroni post hoc tests for comparison between groups (sextants) (p < 0.05).
RESULTS: Deep temporal nerve entry points were found in the temporal muscle in all areas. Most of the branches were observed in ar

Scientific interest in the pathogenesis of tension-type headache (TTH) has lagged behind that of migraine, although TTH is the most common headache disorder and considered the most important in terms of socioeconomic impact. As a result, understanding of the underlying mechanisms of TTH has remained relatively incomplete.

Persistent pain and disability after injuries to the shoulder sometimes create a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic problem. In many such cases, myofascial trigger points seem to cause symptoms. Three cases in which pain had persisted for eight to 33 months after injury illustrate the manifestations of posttraumatic myofascial trigger point disorders. Trigger points are located by finding discrete foci of tenderness in muscles. Trigger points may be palpably firmer than surrounding muscle, forming nodules; they may twitch in response to palpation and may refer pain to a specific area when st

INTRODUCTION: An abnormal increase in spontaneous neurotransmission can induce subsynaptic knots in the myocyte called myofascial trigger points. The treatment of choice is to destroy these trigger points by inserting needles. However, 10% of the population has a phobia of needles, blood, or injuries. Therefore, the objective of this study is to verify the usefulness of shock waves in the treatment of myofascial trigger points.
METHODS: Two groups of mice have been developed for this: healthy muscles treated with shock waves; trigger points affected muscles artificially generated with neostig

BACKGROUND: A myofascial trigger point is defined as a hyperirritable spot in skeletal muscle that is associated with a hypersensitive palpable nodule in a taut band. It has been suggested that myofascial trigger points take part in chronic pain conditions including primary headache disorders. The aim of this narrative review is to present an overview of the current imaging modalities used for the detection of myofascial trigger points and to review studies of myofascial trigger points in migraine and tension-type headache.
FINDINGS: Different modalities have been used to assess myofascial tr

OBJECTIVE: To assess nutritive blood flow, lactate, and glucose within active and latent trigger points (TrPs) compared with non-TrP muscle.
DESIGN: Case-controlled observational study.
SETTING: A university-based clinical and translational research center.
PARTICIPANTS: Active TrPs were identified through palpation of the upper trapezius muscle of individuals with episodic or chronic tension-type headache (TTH). Latent TrPs and muscle without TrPs were identified in age- and sex-matched subjects without a history of headache. A total of 64 individuals participated in the study.

Myofascial pain and myofascial pain syndromes are among some of the most common acute and chronic pain conditions. Many interventional procedures can be performed in both an acute and chronic pain setting to address myofascial pain syndromes. Trigger point injections can be performed with or without imaging guidance such as fluoroscopy and ultrasound; however, the use of imaging in years past has been recommended to improve patient outcome and safety. Injections can be performed using no injectate (dry needling), or can involve the administration of local anesthetics, botulinum toxin, or corti

Although acupuncture points and myofascial trigger points (TPs) are based in different medical fields, the two points share important attributes. We explored the relationship between acupuncture points and TPs based on their characteristics and the results of previous studies. We outlined the relationship between acupuncture points and TPs by examining their similarities and differences. Among the acupuncture point subgroups, TPs mostly corresponded to Ashi points. Based on the common features of TPs and Ashi points, we suggest that TPs are more closely related to Ashi points than to other acu

The interaction between palliative care (PC) and inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) is an area of increasing clinical importance. However, the integration of PC in this field remains limited due to several factors, including a lack of understanding of the specialty, reluctance to refer, limited resources and the absence of specific eligibility criteria for IMD patients. This article proposes a novel framework of trigger points to guide timely PC referral in the IMD field. Based on a review of the literature and the pathophysiological characteristics of IMDs, three pairs of illness trajectorie

Active myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) have been found to contribute to chronic tension-type headache and migraine. The purpose of this case series was to examine if active trigger points (TrPs) provoking cluster-type referred pain could be found in cluster headache patients and, if so, to evaluate the effectiveness of active TrPs anaesthetic injections both in the acute and preventive headache's treatment. Twelve patients, 4 experiencing episodic and 8 chronic cluster headache, were studied. TrPs were found in all of them. Abortive infiltrations could be done in 2 episodic and 4 chronic pat

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry2005eng
A variety of pathologic conditions can cause orofacial pain. Establishing the etiology of the pain is key to providing appropriate treatment. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a relatively uncommon condition and can present a diagnostic challenge to even the experienced dental practitioner. The authors discuss two cases of TN that exhibited intraoral trigger points, which initially resulted in confusion regarding the establishment of a correct diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Heating the skin and muscles is a commonly accepted method of pain relief and a modality to increase relaxation in muscles and increase tissue blood flow.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of local heat applied to trigger points and to determine if there was pain relief in the neck and plantar fascia.
METHODS: Forty adults were divided into 2 different groups according to their pain; twenty subjects had plantar foot pain and the other 20 had nonspecific neck pain. The 20 subjects in each group were randomly subdivided into a heat and a sham gro

BACKGROUND: Dry needling is an increasingly popular technique for relieving musculoskeletal pain, through targeting myofascial trigger points. Existing evidence indicates that dry needling is effective in short-term management of pain, with research showing efficacy in improving functional outcomes when compared to other treatments.
INDICATIONS: Myofascial trigger points may result in range of motion limitations and muscle weakness. Noninvasive treatments for musculoskeletal pain associated with myofascial trigger points, such as stretching or warm compresses, may not provide significant bene
