Community Water Trihalomethanes and Chronic Kidney Disease.

IMPORTANCE: Over 90% of the US population relies on community water supplies (CWS), which generally use chlorine for disinfection. Trihalomethanes are regulated disinfection byproducts associated with bladder cancer and adverse birth outcomes. Animal studies report trihalomethanes, especially brominated compounds, may damage kidney function, but epidemiologic research is limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate long-term exposure to trihalomethanes in residential CWS and its association with chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The California Teachers Study (CTS) is a

Toxicological aspects of trihalomethanes: a systematic review.

Chlorine is considered the most used chemical agent for water disinfection worldwide. However, water chlorination can lead to by-product generation which can be toxic to humans. The present study aimed to perform a systematic review on the toxicity of trihalomethanes (THMs) through bioindicators of cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and mutagenicity. The results showed that studies on the effects of THMs on DNA are a current research concern for evaluating the toxicity of the pure compounds and real samples involving several types including water for recreational use, reused water, and drinking water

Trihalomethanes in drinking water and spontaneous abortion.

Trihalomethanes (chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and chlorodibromomethane) are common contaminants of chlorinated drinking water. Although animal data indicate that these compounds may be reproductive toxicants, little information exists on their relation to spontaneous abortion in humans. We examined exposure to trihalomethanes and spontaneous abortion in a prospective study of 5,144 pregnant women in a prepaid health plan. Seventy-eight drinking water utilities provided concurrent trihalomethane sampling data. We calculated total trihalomethane levels by averaging all measuremen

Uptake of trihalomethanes by patients during hemodialysis.

Trihalomethanes (THM) present in tap water were also found in dialysis fluid because they were not eliminated by water treatment. THM, absorbed through the dialyser membranes, increased considerably in blood and in expired air of patients on hemodialysis during the dialysis sessions. The uptake of THM during each dialysis session was about 1 mg.

Occupational exposure to trihalomethanes in indoor swimming pools.

The study evaluated occupational exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs) in indoor swimming pools. Thirty-two subjects, representing the whole workforce employed in the five public indoor swimming pools in the city of Modena (Northern Italy) were enrolled. Both environmental and biological monitoring of THMs exposure were performed. Environmental concentrations of THMs in different areas inside the swimming pools (at the poolside, in the reception area and in the engine-room) were measured as external exposure index, while individual exposure of swimming pool employees was estimated by THMs concent

Bromodichloromethane, a trihalomethane that produces neoplasms in rodents.

Bromodichloromethane, a trihalomethane found in water supplies after chlorination, was administered by gavage in corn oil to male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice for up to 2 years at dose levels of 0, 50, or 100 mg/kg to rats, 0, 25, or 50 mg/kg to male mice, and 0, 75, or 150 mg/kg to female mice. Survival at 2 years in rats and in male mice was comparable among groups and was greater than 50% at the termination of the experiment. Survival in female mice was greater than 50% in all groups until week 84 but was reduced toward the end of the study because of ovarian abscesses in some fem

Trihalomethanes in Water Supply System and Water Distribution Networks.

The formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) in natural and treated water from water supply systems is an urgent research area due to the carcinogenic risk they pose. Seasonal effects and pH have captured interest as potential factors affecting THM formation in the water supply and distribution systems. We investigated THM occurrence in the water supply chain, including raw and treated water from water treatment plants (coagulation, sedimentation, sand filtration, ClO2-disinfection processes, and distribution pipelines) in the Chiang Mai municipality, particularly the educational institute area. Factors Associated with Exposure to Trihalomethanes, NHANES 2001-2012.

Disinfection is critical for maintaining a safe water supply, but the use of chlorine or chloramine leads to exposure to disinfection byproducts (DBPs), including trihalomethanes (THMs), which have been associated with adverse reproductive outcomes and bladder cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency revised the DBP regulations starting in 1998 to further limit levels of THMs in household water. We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2001 and 2012 (with 2 years per cycle) using models with and without water-related predicto

Trihalomethanes in public water supplies and adverse birth outcomes.

We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the relation between the level of total trihalomethanes in drinking water and adverse birth outcomes. The study population comprised women residing in an area with municipal surface water who had a singleton birth in Nova Scotia between January 1, 1988, and December 31, 1995, or a pregnancy termination for a major fetal anomaly. We found little association between trihalomethane level and the outcomes related to fetal weight or gestational age, but we found an elevated relative risk for stillbirths for average trihalomethane levels during p

Effectiveness of biosurfactant for the removal of trihalomethanes by biotrickling filter.

In this study, the biodegradation of a mixture of two trihalomethane (THM) compounds, chloroform (CF) and dichlorobromomethane (DCBM), was evaluated using two laboratory-scale biotrickling filters (BTFs). The two BTFs, hereby designated as "BTF-A" and "BTF-B," were run parallel and used ethanol as co-metabolite at different loading rates (LRs), and a lipopeptide-type biosurfactant that was generated by the gram-positive bacteria, Surfactin, respectively. The results using BTF-A showed that adding ethanol at a higher rate of 4.59 g/(m3 h) resulted in removal efficiencies of 85% and 87% for CF a

Formation and speciation characteristics of brominated trihalomethanes in seawater chlorination.

Formation character of brominated-trihalomethanes (Br-THMs) in chlorinated seawater and its dependence on applied chlorine dose, reaction time, and temperature were investigated in the laboratory. Seawater was collected from the east coast of India and a chlorine dose of 1, 3, 5, and 10 ppm was each applied at a temperature of 20, 30, and 40 degrees C to investigate the yield and kinetics of Br-THMs formation. Qualitative and quantitative estimation of THM formation at various intervals of time ranging from 5 min to 168 h was determined by a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture

Trihalomethane levels in home tap water and semen quality.

BACKGROUND: Trihalomethanes (THMs) are byproducts of drinking water chlorination whose effects on semen quality have not been previously studied in humans. METHODS: We examined the relationship of THMs to semen quality in 157 healthy men from couples without known risk factors for infertility. Total THM (TTHM) levels were assigned based on water utility measurements taken during the 90 days preceding semen collection. We analyzed continuous semen parameters in relation to total and individual THMs, adjusting for potential confounders by using repeated measures analyses. RESULTS: TTHM level w

National scale assessment of total trihalomethanes in Irish drinking water.

Ireland reported the highest non-compliance with respect to total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) in drinking water across the 27 European Union Member States for the year 2010. We carried out a GIS-based investigation of the links between geographical parameters and catchment land-uses with TTHMs concentrations in Irish drinking water. A high risk catchment map was created using peat presence, rainfall (>1400 mm) and slope (<5%) and overlain with a map comprising the national dataset of routinely monitored TTHM concentrations. It appeared evident from the map that the presence of peat, rainfall and s

Effect of trihalomethanes (chloroform and bromoform) on human haematological count.

With the increasing concerns about the harmful effects of disinfection products, the process of chlorination is becoming questionable. Bromoform and chloroform are among the most frequently occurring disinfection by-products. Haematological parameters are an important indicator of human well-being which is why the prime objective of the current study was to conduct a dose-response assessment to investigate the effects of trihalomethanes on human haematological count. Blood samples of healthy subjects were exposed to different concentrations (10, 30 and 50 μg/mL) of chloroform and bromoform in

Solvent-minimized extraction for determining halonitromethanes and trihalomethanes in water.

Halonitromethanes (HNMs) are a class of nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) that have so far received little attention and focused largely on trichloronitromethane. By contrast, trihalomethanes (THMs) are the most commonly regulated DBPs and have been the subject of much study. This paper reports the first miniaturized system for the simultaneous determination of the nine known HNMs and four THMs in tap and swimming pool water. Micro liquid-liquid extraction (MLLE) is an adaptation of EPA Method 551.1 using ethyl acetate instead of methyl tert-butyl ether as extractant and large inje

Trihalomethane species model for drinking water supply systems.

Despite the existence of significant knowedge on complex mechanisms of THM formation, a simple kinetic model to predict THM species concentration is not available, hindering application of knowlwdge for regulatory, monitoring and operational control. The parallel second order reaction (2R) model containing fast and slow reactants has been well established to describe the chlorine decay kinetics under distribution conditions. The proposed THM species model expands the 2R model by systematically incorporating the initial unproductive (not forming THM) chlorine consumption and assuming each THM s

Presence of Trihalomethanes in ready-to-eat vegetables disinfected with chlorine.

Trihalomethanes (THMs) - CHCl3, CHCl2Br, CHClBr2 and CHBr3 - are drinking water disinfection by-products (DBPs). These compounds can also be absorbed by different types of foods, including ready-to-eat (RTE) fresh vegetables. The potential absorption of THMs during washing of RTE vegetables could pose a potential risk to consumers' health. The concentration of THMs in the water used in the manufacturing process of these products shall not exceed the limit of 100 or 80 µgL-1 according to European Union (EU) and United States legislation, respectively. By contrast, there is little information ab

Predictors of blood trihalomethane concentrations in NHANES 1999-2006.

BACKGROUND: Trihalomethanes (THMs) are water disinfection by-products that have been associated with bladder cancer and adverse birth outcomes. Four THMs (bromoform, chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane) were measured in blood and tap water of U.S. adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2006. THMs are metabolized to potentially toxic/mutagenic intermediates by cytochrome p450 (CYP) 2D6 and CYP2E1 enzymes. OBJECTIVES: We conducted exploratory analyses of blood THMs, including factors affecting CYP2D6 and CYP2E1 activity. METHODS: We used
