Tritrichomonas foetus.

Tritrichomonas foetus is a venereal disease of cattle that has a clear pattern of adverse reproductive sequela in the affected female, with a carrier state in the bull in which he shows no outward signs. Given sexual rest and symptomatic treatment, the female returns to reproductive viability. In contrast, the male remains infective and is a risk to other female contacts. Prevention of the disease relies on excluding infected males and females from the population of susceptible cattle. Control of this disease requires a plan to identify, isolate, and treat infected females, and eliminate or cu

Comparative histopathology and antibody responses of non-Tritrichomonas foetus trichomonad and Tritrichomonas foetus genital infections in virgin heifers.

The potential pathogenicity of non-Tritrichomonas foetus trichomonads (NTfTs) recently isolated from the prepuce of virgin bulls is not known. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of these NTfTs to cause disease in the female reproductive tract relative to T. foetus. Forty-four virgin heifers were experimentally infected intravaginally with either one of two NTfTs (Pentatrichomonas hominis or Tetratrichomonas spp.), T. foetus, or sterile media and cultured weekly from 0 time until slaughter at 8 weeks. Serum and vaginal antibody responses during infection were assessed, and t

Induced Tritrichomonas foetus infection in beef heifers.

Four virgin beef heifers were inoculated intravaginally with 7 x 10(6) Tritrichomonas foetus organisms. Protozoal colonization of the vagina, cervix, and uterus developed within the first week after inoculation. Protozoa were no longer detected in secretions from these regions at approximately the same time in each heifer. Trichomonads were detected in reproductive tract secretions for 13 to 28 weeks. Eight weeks after clearance of trichomonads from the reproductive tract, a second infection was established in 2 of the 4 heifers by intravaginal inoculation of T foetus. The second infections we

New insights on the Golgi complex of Tritrichomonas foetus.

Tritrichomonas foetus is a protist that causes bovine trichomoniasis and presents a well-developed Golgi. There are very few studies concerning the Golgi in trichomonads. In this work, monoclonal antibodies were raised against Golgi of T. foetus and used as a tool on morphologic and biochemical studies of this organelle. Among the antibodies produced, one was named mAb anti-Golgi 20.3, which recognized specifically the Golgi complex by fluorescence and electron microscopy. By immunoblotting this antibody recognized two proteins with 60 and 66 kDa that were identified as putative beta-tubulin a

Tritrichomonas foetus infection in cat - first detection in Poland.

Tritrichomonas foetus, a parasite of cattle reproductive system, has been recently discovered as a cause of disease in cats in many countries. T. foetus infects and colonizes cat's ileum, caecum, colon and can lead to enteritis. This paper presents the first clinical case of cat intestinal trichomonosis caused by T. foetus in Poland. The material for this study was a smear collected from a 6-month-old male British Shorthair cat. The presence of parasitic protozoan was determined via microscopic examination and confirmed by amplification of T. foetus rDNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) t

A pregnant mouse model for bovine Tritrichomonas foetus infection.

The economically important effects of Tritrichomonas foetus infection in cattle are abortion and infertility, yet there has not been an animal model to examine the parasite-host interactions during gestation. In this study, 5- and 7- to 8-week-old BALB/cAnNCr, BALB/cJ, and SCID/NCr mice on a BALB/c background were intravaginally infected with T. foetus. All BALB/cAnNCr and BALB/cJ mice, and 89% of SCID/NCr mice sustained infections for 13 weeks, if inoculated before 5 weeks of age. Infection rates were lower in all mouse strains inoculated at 7 weeks of age, although BALB/cAnNCr mice were sign

Comparative RNA-seq analysis of the Tritrichomonas foetus PIG30/1 isolate from pigs reveals close association with Tritrichomonas foetus BP-4 isolate 'bovine genotype'.

Tritrichomonas foetus was described as a commensal of the stomach, caecum and nasal cavity of pigs before it was recognised as the cause of reproductive tract disease of cattle. T. foetus also causes chronic large bowel diarrhoea in domestic cats. Multi-locus genotyping and comparative transcriptome analysis has previously revealed that T. foetus isolated from cat and cattle hosts are genetically distinct, referred to as the 'feline genotype' and 'bovine genotype', respectively. Conversely, multi-locus genotyping has grouped porcine T. foetus with the 'bovine genotype'. To compare the extent o

Tritrichomonas foetus: prevalence study in naturally mating bulls in Switzerland.

Switzerland is officially free from bovine Tritrichomonas foetus. While bulls used for artificial insemination (AI) are routinely examined for this pathogen, bulls engaged in natural mating, as well as aborted fetuses, are only very sporadically investigated, indicating that the disease awareness for bovine tritrichomoniasis is low. Natural mating in cattle is becoming increasingly popular in Switzerland. Accordingly, a re-introduction/re-occurrence of T. foetus in cattle seems possible either via resurgence from a yet unknown bovine reservoir, or via importation of infected cattle. The low di

First report of Tritrichomonas foetus in cats from Northeastern Brazil.

Tritrichomonas foetus is a protozoan parasite implicated in intestinal infections in domestic cats, frequently associated with chronic diarrhea. Although reported on nearly all continents, its occurrence in Brazil is rare and has been restricted to the Southeast region so far. This study reports, for the first time, T. foetus infection in two Maine Coon cats originating from the Northeastern region of the country. Both animals exhibited persistent diarrhea unresponsive to initial therapeutic interventions and underwent clinical and laboratory evaluation. Fecal analysis performed on samples obt

In vitro culture of Tritrichomonas foetus in bovine cervico-vaginal fluid.

Tritrichomonas foetus is the causative agent of bovine trichomonosis, a venereal disease that can lead to fetal loss. T. foetus proliferates in the vagina and cervix and invades the uterus and fetal cavities. It is not clear how T. foetus grows in the host or how its infection rarely demonstrable after 4 months, is controlled. Cervical vaginal mucus (CVM) is a protective barrier against potentially harmful microorganisms. Here, we demonstrate that bovine CVM is a medium in which this protozoan parasite can grow in vitro. T. foetus multiplied at different rates depending on the time of the estr

A case of "misplaced" Tritrichomonas foetus infection in a dog in Northern Italy.

An 8-year-old, spayed female Rottweiler dog, under immunosuppressant treatment for protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) and intestinal lymphangiectasia, was presented for anorexia, poor general conditions and episodes of diarrhea. A subcutaneous mass between the caudal abdominal mammary glands was found. A fine-needle aspiration cytology was performed and revealed the presence of inflammatory cells mixed with pear- or round-shaped microorganisms with cytomorphological features of flagellated protozoan trophozoites, belonging to Trichomonadida order. The final diagnosis of Tritrichomonas foetus inf

Tritrichomonas Foetus as a Causative Agent of Tritrichomonosis in Different Animal Hosts.

Tritrichomonas foetus is a protozoan parasite that has been traditionally identified as a cause of reproductive tract disease in cattle and gastrointestinal tract infection in cats. Moreover, T. foetus is also well known as a commensal of the nasal cavity, intestines, and stomach in swine. In this review we describe T. foetus as a pathogen dangerous to more than one animal host, diagnostic and taxonomic aspects of this infection, and the extent to which isolates from different hosts share genetic identity.

Prevalence of Tritrichomonas foetus infection in beef bulls in northwestern Spain.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Tritrichomonas foetus infection in beef bulls in north-western Spain. The study area comprised of 350 herds (5909 cows and 102 bulls) managed under extensive or semi-extensive systems where natural mating alone or alternated with artificial insemination are used. The targets of this survey were bulls of 1 year of age or older. Preputial smegma samples were taken from 70 bulls (68.6% of bull population) servicing a total of 184 herds (52.6%) and 4136 cows (69.9%). Data collected at sampling included farm location, herd size, age, br

DNA analysis of cattle parasitic protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus after photodynamic therapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a modality of therapy that involves the activation of photosensitive substances and the generation of cytotoxic oxygen species and free radicals to promote the selective destruction of target tissues. This study analyzed the application of PDT to Tritrichomonas foetus, a scourged and etiological agent of bovine trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infectious disease. As it is an amitochondrial and aerotolerant protozoan, it produces energy under low O2 tension via hydrogenosome. T. foetus from an axenic culture was incubated with photosensitizer tetrasulfonated

Tritrichomonas foetus induces apoptotic cell death in bovine vaginal epithelial cells.

Tritrichomonas foetus is a serious veterinary pathogen, causing bovine trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease leading to infertility and abortion. T. foetus infects the mucosal surfaces of the reproductive tract. Infection with T. foetus leads to apoptotic cell death of bovine vaginal epithelial cells (BVECs) in culture. An affinity-purified cysteine protease (CP) fraction yielding on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis a single band with an apparent molecular mass of 30 kDa (CP30) also induces BVEC apoptosis. Treatment of CP30 with the protease inhibitors TLCK (N

A Multi-Omics Perspective on Tritrichomonas foetus: From Genomics to Future Directions.

Tritrichomonas foetus is an anaerobic flagellated protozoan that infects multiple animal hosts, primarily cattle and cats, with occasional isolation from pigs. It causes bovine trichomonosis, a venereal disease associated with infertility, abortion, and economic losses in cattle herd. In cats, T. foetus infects the gastrointestinal tract, causing chronic diarrhea which can be difficult to treat. Despite its broad impact, the pathogen is difficult to control because it evades immune responses and persists in host tissues. Recent advances in omics technologies, including genomics, transcriptomic
