Effects of tropicamide and compound tropicamide eye drops on ocular biological parameters and choroid thickness in children.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of short-acting cycloplegic agents, tropicamide and compound tropicamide, on ocular biological parameters and choroid thickness. METHODS: In this study, seventy pediatric subjects aged 6 to 13 years were randomly assigned to two groups: the tropicamide group and compound tropicamide group. Ocular biological parameters and choroidal thickness (CT) and subfoveal choroid thickness (SFCT) were measured in both groups and were retested 40 min after drug administration. The tropicamide eye drops were administered into the conjunctival sac every 5 min with 1 drop,

Efficacy of dapiprazole with hydroxyamphetamine hydrobromide and tropicamide.

BACKGROUND: Clinical interest in ophthalmic agents to reverse pharmacologically induced mydriasis safely has been attempted for over fifty years. These agents may aid practitioners in assisting the younger patient to regain unable near visual function. METHODS: We evaluated the usefulness of dapiprazole in a private clinical setting. Our study was doubled masked, randomized and used one eye of each subject as a control. Twenty-six consecutive subjects were given dapiprazole as directed by its manufacturer. This administration of dapiprazole followed bilateral pupil dilation with proparacaine

Dapiprazole clinical efficiency for counteracting tropicamide 1%.

We evaluated the clinical usefulness of dapiprazole in reversing the effects of tropicamide 1.0%. Our study was random, masked with placebo, and used one eye of each subject as a control. Thirty subjects were given dapiprazole as directed by the manufacturer 30 min after being dilated by one drop each of proparacaine 0.5%, tropicamide 1.0%, and then 5 min later another drop of tropicamide 1.0%. Pupil diameter, amplitude of accommodation, conjunctival injection, and intraocular pressure were evaluated. Each of these variables was measured: (1) before instillation of the diagnostic agents; (2) b

Atropine versus cyclopentolate plus tropicamide in esodeviations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The correction of the total hypermetropic refractive error in the management of esodeviations is well accepted. The choice of the appropriate cycloplegic agent is still not settled. Despite evidence that atropine will more effectively uncover the total refractive error, cyclopentolate in combination with other cycloplegic agents continues to be recommended. This study evaluates the use of atropine compared with a combination of cyclopentolate and tropicamide and analyzes age, size of the refractive error, and size of the esodeviation as possible contributing variables

The cycloplegic effects of cyclopentolate and tropicamide on myopic children.

Thirty-seven myopic children were given either 1-2 drops of 1% cyclopentolate or 1% tropicamide twice with 5 min intervals to evaluate the time course and maximal cycloplegic effect of both agents. The other fifteen subjects were given 1% tropicamide initially, then 1% cyclopentolate given after 30 min of maximal effect of tropicamide appeared to evaluate whether the effect of cyclopentolate was superior to tropicamide. Cycloplegic refraction was measured with an auto-refractometer (Topcon RK-3000) before drug delivery and every 15 min thereafter, for 90 min. The maximal cycloplegic effect of

[Experience with pupil tropicamide test in Alzheimer's disease].

Scinto et al (Science 1994; 266: 1051-4) observed that a single drop of 0.01% tropicamide elicited more than a 13% pupil dilatation in 19 individuals with probable or possible Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 3 cognitive abnormal elderly without dementia, but not in 30 out of 32 normal elderly and 3 out of 4 patients suffering from other dementias. It could be an easy and bloodless test to help in diagnosing AD. We have administered the same test to 10 patients with probable AD (NINCDS-ADRDA criteria) and twenty 40-90 year-old control subjects (10 of whom were sons or daughters of AD patients and

Comparison of cyclopentolate versus tropicamide cycloplegia in children.

This double masked study compares the cycloplegic effects of tropicamide 1% and cyclopentolate 1% in 20 nonstrabismic, nonamblyopic, hyperopic 6- to 12-year-old children with a mean refractive error = +1.48 +/- 1.10 diopters (D). Unlike previous studies which used only amplitude of accommodation to measure the depth of cycloplegia, this study compares refractive error as determined by retinoscopy, distance subjective refraction, and distance autorefraction (Canon R-1). In addition, we compare the amplitude of accommodation as measured by subjective push-up and objective autorefraction methods.

Synthesis, characterization and pharmacological profile of tropicamide enantiomers.

The synthesis, chemical characterization and antimuscarinic activity of the two enantiomers of tropicamide are reported. Functional (rabbit vas deferens, guinea pig heart (force) and ileum) as well as binding experiments (m1 and m4 human muscarinic receptors expressed in CHO-K1 cells: M2 and M3 receptors of rat heart and submaxillary gland membranes) were used to evaluate the antimuscarinic activity of the enantiomers. The results show that none of the enantiomers is able to significantly discriminate among the receptors studied and therefore do not support the proposal of tropicamide as an M4

Allergic Reaction to Tropicamide Eye Drops: A Case Report.

This case report presents the clinical scenario of a 50-year-old man who developed swelling and itching around both eyes after applying tropicamide eye drops for an ophthalmic examination. The swelling appeared suddenly, progressed over time, and was accompanied by redness, watery discharge, and conjunctival congestion. A dermoscopic examination revealed congestion and erythema in the affected area. Visual acuity was compromised in the left eye. Prompt identification of the eyedrops as plain tropicamide with chlorbutol as a preservative enabled timely treatment with intravenous hydrocortisone

Abuse of tropicamide eye drops: review of clinical data.

Over the past 15 years, the increasing nonmedical use of tropicamide ophthalmic drops has been reported in Europe, coinciding with an increase in opioid addiction and drug-related mortality. Although tropicamide is generally known as a cheap alternative to heroin in Eastern Europe, it still appears to be a relatively new phenomenon that has arisen over the last decade. A narrative review was conducted of all the relevant sources published in more than five countries between January 1, 1975 and January 10, 2021. For bibliographic accuracy, the materials published in Russian and Italian were pro

Reduced mydriasis from repeated doses of tropicamide and cyclopentolate.

Pupils are often dilated for examination the day before surgery and again on the day of surgery. The following experiment was performed to determine the effect of serial doses of two commonly used mydriatic agents: on two consecutive days the pupil of one of the eyes of 28 subjects was dilated with tropicamide 1%, and the pupil of one of the eyes of 30 subjects was dilated with cyclopentolate hydrochloride 1%. The other eyes in both groups were dilated only on the second day, and thus served as controls. Pupil sizes were measured from photographs before and after dilation. The pupils of the ey

Effect of Pupil Dilation with Tropicamide on Retinal Vascular Caliber.

Purpose: The retinal blood vessels reflect changes in the brain's micro-circulation and these changes have been shown to correlate with the incidence of diseases such as stroke, heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. Studies investigating the retinal vasculature routinely use pupil dilation with tropicamide to optimize image acquisition and quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of tropicamide on retinal vascular parameters using retinal photography. Methods: The study was performed on 41 healthy young subjects of both sexes, using tropicamide to dilate only the right pup

The Combined Effect of Tropicamide and Phenylephrine on Corneal Astigmatism Axis.

PURPOSE: To analyze astigmatism axis changes after tropicamide and phenylephrine combined instillation. METHOD: One hundred and thirty-one eyes from 66 patients enrolled this cross-sectional study. An extensive ocular examination was carried out prior to tropicamide and phenylephrine instillation. Power and axis value from flat, steep, and mean keratometry were calculated using an Auto Kerato-Refractometer (AKR). Later, topography and tomography maps were evaluated with Pentacam HR® (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany). Subsequently, a single drop of tropicamide 1% and phenylephrine hydrochloride 10% w

[Cycloplegic effectiveness of cyclopentolate and tropicamide preparations compared with atropinization].

To gain a comparative estimate of cycloplegic agents with mild effect vs conventional atropinization, a study was performed on refraction in 57 children after instillations of cyclopentolate and atropine and in 57 children after instillations of tropicamide and atropine. A difference was determined in refraction after instillation of cycloplegic agents with mild effect and atropine. It turned out that by depth of cycloplegic effect cyclopentolate is reaching that of atropine. Cyclopentolate can be used in initial study of refraction in children with hypermetropic and myopic refraction and in r

Pupil dilatation with tropicamide. The effects on acuity, accommodation and refraction.

The effect of pupil dilatation with tropicamide 1% on visual acuity and accommodation was assessed in 100 eyes of 52 consecutive patients attending the general ophthalmic outpatient clinic. Snellen visual acuity remained unchanged in 55 eyes and deteriorated by one line in 41 eyes. The remaining four eyes deteriorated by two lines. Tropicamide gave rise to a reduction in the amplitude of accommodation which tended to vary inversely with the age of the patient. However, all patients who wore reading glasses for presbyopia were still able to read when their pupils had been dilated.

Does topical phenylephrine, tropicamide, or proparacaine affect macular blood flow?

The acute effect of topical phenylephrine HCl 10%, tropicamide 1% and proparacaine HCl 0.5% on macular capillary blood flow was studied in six healthy human volunteers using the blue field simulation technique. This technique provides a method for quantifying the velocity of leukocytes flowing in one's own retinal macular capillaries. Patients adjusted the velocity of computer simulated leukocytes moving on a CRT screen to match that of their own entoptically perceived leukocytes before instillation of each of the tested preparations and for 35 minutes immediately thereafter A 5% NaCl solution
