This paper presents a graphical method for determining the linearized stiffness and stability of prestressed trusses consisting of rigid bars connected at pinned joints and which possess kinematic freedoms. Key to the construction are the rectangular areas which combine the reciprocal form and force diagrams in the unified Maxwell-Minkowski diagram. The area of each such rectangle is the product of the bar tension and the bar length, and this corresponds to the rotational stiffness of the bar that arises due to the axial force that it carries. The prestress stability of any kinematic freedom m

Theoretical or numerical progressive collapse analysis is necessary for important civil structures in case of unforeseen accidents. However, currently, most analytical research is carried out under the assumption of material elasticity for problem simplification, leading to the deviation of analysis results from actual situations. On this account, a progressive collapse analysis procedure for truss structures is proposed, based on the assumption of elastoplastic materials. A plastic importance coefficient was defined to express the importance of truss members in the entire system. The plastic

Titanium cages with 3-D printed trussed open-space architectures may provide an opportunity to deliver targeted mechanical behavior in spine interbody fusion devices. The ability to control mechanical strain, at levels known to stimulate an osteogenic response, to the fusion site could lead to development of optimized therapeutic implants that improve clinical outcomes. In this study, cages of varying design (1.00 mm or 0.75 mm diameter struts) were mechanically characterized and compared for multiple compressive load magnitudes in order to determine what impact certain design variables had on

This article aims to address the in-orbit assembly needs of truss structures in space missions by designing a robot capable of moving on trusses and manipulating parts. To enhance the stability of the robot during movement and part manipulation, inspiration was drawn from the Dynastes Hercules beetle. Building upon detailed research on the Dynastes Hercules beetle, a biomimetic structure was designed for the robot system. Based on specific task requirements, the overall plan of the robot was developed, and its kinematic and dynamic models were derived. A prototype of the robot was created, whi

Crushing and eating hard prey (durophagy) is mechanically demanding. The cartilage jaws of durophagous stingrays are known to be reinforced relative to non-durophagous relatives, with a thickened external cortex of mineralized blocks (tesserae), reinforcing struts inside the jaw (trabeculae), and pavement-like dentition. These strategies for skeletal strengthening against durophagy, however, are largely understood only from myliobatiform stingrays, although a hard prey diet has evolved multiple times in batoid fishes (rays, skates, guitarfishes). We perform a quantitative analysis of micro-CT

Bolted connections usually govern the structural rigidity and load-carrying capacity of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) truss structures. In this study, a novel bolted integrated gusset plate (IGP) connection is proposed to enhance the stiffness and capacity of GFRP truss structures. Nine double-lap shear tests of GFRP joints and numerical simulation were conducted to investigate the influence of variable design parameters of the bolted GFRP joints (number of bolts, width and thickness of GFRP, edge distance of bolts, and the employment of adhesive). Three full-scale GFRP truss

Subtalar joint distraction arthrodesis has been recommended for the treatment of conditions such as nonunion or malunion of subtalar joint arthrodesis posttraumatic arthritis. Both conditions are difficult to treat, because the deformities created in the frontal and sagittal planes of these conditions are complex. If these malalignments are not addressed, ankle joint instability and wear occur over time. In general, either autograft or allograft bone has been used to perform distraction arthrodesis of the subtalar joint. Although studies have shown successful use, there have been complications

Metal-plate-connected (MPC) joints govern the stiffness and load-bearing performance of many prefabricated timber roof trusses, yet their response to repeated moisture changes remains critical for serviceability and durability. This study evaluated five continuous C24 Norway spruce reference specimens and fifteen specimens joined with GNA20-MIT nail plates using sequential four-point-bending stiffness measurements and wetting-drying conditioning. Test I was used as the initial stiffness stage, whereas Tests II and III followed successive 24 h water-immersion and 6-day natural-drying intervals;

The deformation monitoring of integrated truss structures (ITSs) is essential for ensuring the reliable performance of mounted equipment in complex space environments. Reconstruction methods based on local strain information have been proven effective, yet the identification faces significant challenges due to variable thermal-mechanical loads, interactions among structural components, and special boundary conditions. This paper proposes a deformation reconstruction strategy tailored for ITSs under combined thermal-mechanical load scenarios wherein deformations of both the primary truss struct

Aiming at the key issues of low connection efficiency and poor quality of CF/PEEK (Carbon Fiber/Polyether-Ether-Ketone) truss wrapped nodes in the on-orbit manufacturing of large space structures, an innovative truss node clad horn technology based on ultrasonic welding is proposed. Furthermore, by establishing a multi-field coupling model of heat generation-heat transfer-melt spreading for CF/PEEK ultrasonic welding in a vacuum environment. The interface friction-viscoelastic heat generation mechanism is revealed for the first time, which demonstrates the coupled heat generation effect of int

In this paper, a new technology for on-orbit cold forming of space truss rods is proposed. For the cold roll forming process of asymmetric cross sections of thin strips, the effects of roll gap and roll spacing on the forming of asymmetric cross sections of strips were investigated using ABAQUS simulation + experiments. The study shows the following. When forming a strip with a specific asymmetric cross section, the stresses are mainly concentrated in corners 2/4/6, with the largest strain value in corner 2. With increasing forming passes, when the roll gap is 0.3 mm, the maximum equivalent st

The primary objective was to compare the subsidence resistance properties of a novel 3D-printed spinal interbody titanium implant versus a predicate polymeric annular cage. We evaluated a 3D-printed spinal interbody fusion device that employs truss-based bio-architectural features to apply the snowshoe principle of line length contact to provide efficient load distribution across the implant/endplate interface as means of resisting implant subsidence. Devices were tested mechanically using synthetic bone blocks of differing densities (osteoporotic to normal) to determine the corresponding resi

Abdominal trussing constitutes an inward fixation of the abdominal wall. In the context of speech habilitation/rehabilitation, it is sometimes used to supplant, in part, the function of a paralyzed or paretic abdominal wall. A paralyzed or paretic abdominal wall may be found in individuals with cervical spinal cord injury or in individuals with other neurologic disorders, such as muscular dystrophy. This research was designed to study the effects of trussing as a dinical treatment. A study was designed to systematically and precisely place the abdominal wall at one position (50% inward) to stu

The human jawbone exhibits anisotropic mechanical behavior due to its complex trabecular microstructure, creating challenges for bioinspired scaffold design in maxillofacial implants. In this study, anisotropic scaffolds were fabricated from PolyLactic Acid (PLA) using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and based on modified octet-truss unit cells. Geometric anisotropy was introduced by stretching the unit cell in one direction, generating configurations with varied cell sizes and stretch ratios while maintaining constant scaffold volume. Quasi-static compression tests characterized Young's modul

This dataset contains detailed measurements from a full-scale experimental investigation of layered intermediate floor systems constructed using glued timber trusses. The experimental programme followed a step-by-step construction sequence involving the incremental addition of typical building layers, including OSB sheathing, gypsum board ceilings, concrete topping, and lightweight partition walls. Static displacement tests were conducted under controlled loading using water tanks, with vertical displacements measured by digital dial gauges. Vibration response was assessed using heel-drop exci

Structures are continuously subjected to the combined effects of temperature variations and other environmental factors during service, leading to changes in their structural responses and severely compromising the accuracy of damage identification. To address this temperature-induced interference, this study proposes a damage identification method that jointly identifies damage and temperature parameters. Temperature variations are treated as unknown parameters and identified simultaneously with the damage parameters. The inverse problem is defined by an objective function that quantifies the

Vibration fatigue characteristics are critical for rotating machinery components such as turbine rotor blades. Lattice structures are gaining popularity in engineering applications due to their unique ability to reduce weight and improve the mechanical properties. This study is an experimental investigation of octet-truss lattice structure utilization in turbine rotor blades for weight reduction and to improve vibration fatigue characteristics. One completely solid and three lattice infilled blades with variable strut thickness were manufactured via additive manufacturing. Both free and forced

Treatment of large osseous defects remains a difficult surgical challenge. Autografts and allografts have been known to undergo late collapse, because these options are not specifically designed to withstand the high loads of the foot and ankle. The inability to achieve the correct shape for reconstruction further limits their application. Large osseous defects will result during salvage after failed Lapidus bunionectomy, explantation of failed total ankle replacements, and nonunion of Evans calcaneal osteotomy. Each of 3 patients received a 4WEB custom 3-dimensional (3D) titanium truss implan
