Trypanosoma vivax is a blood parasite of ruminants that was introduced into Latin America in cattle imported from Africa, possibly in the late 19th century. The parasite has now spread to ten of the 13 countries of the South American continent, often resulting in a severe wasting disease and death. Here, we review the current state of knowledge about this parasite and the problems faced by animal health agencies in controlling the disease.

Trypanosomes are the causative agents of animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) and human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), the former affecting domestic animals prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. The main species causing AAT in cattle are T. congolense, T. vivax, and T. b. brucei. Northern Uganda has been politically unstable with no form of vector control in place. The return of displaced inhabitants led to the restocking of cattle from AAT endemic areas. It was thus important to estimate the burden of trypanosomiasis in the region. This study was designed to compare the prevalence of animal Africa

Recent biological investigations of the African trypanosomes have been moving away from their previous preoccupation with the phenomenon of antigenic variation. The feeling has arisen that antigenic variation, as demonstrated by the Trypanozoon and Nannomonas subgenera of trypanosomes, is too extensive, the number of serodemes too large and the coexistence of different species in many areas too complicated, to allow any immunoprophylaxis based on antibodies to variable antigens. This is, of course, not to rule out possible biochemical intervention in the biosynthesis or export of VSG molecules

Morphological changes were observed in the blood forms of Trypanosoma vivax strain Y486 in mice on Days 12-13 of infection, following the peak parasitaemia. During this period elongate trypomastigotes, 25-40 micron long, were observed, most showing an anterior movement of the kinetoplast towards the nucleus and some having a blunt posterior end. In a few parasites a complete transformation to the epimastigote form, 40-42 micron long, was observed. Small sphaeromastigotes were also present, especially in the fine capillaries of various organs. Smears and electron microscopy suggested the presen

Trypanosomosis is a disease of a high economic impact in different productive livestock systems, especially in Africa and South America; cattle, sheep, goats, horses and donkeys can be prone to infection. Trypanosoma vivax is a blood parasite normally associated with a case of anemia and persistent febrile status, which causes a reduction in production, weakness of affected animals and occasionally death. However, the reproductive disorders which include abortion, disruption of the estrous cycle, placental retention, perinatal mortality, among others, can be very severe, especially when they o

African animal trypanosomiasis, or Nagana, is a debilitating and economically costly disease with a major impact on animal health in sub-Saharan Africa. Trypanosoma vivax, one of the principal trypanosome species responsible for the disease, infects a wide host range including cattle, goats, horses and donkeys and is transmitted both cyclically by tsetse flies and mechanically by other biting flies, resulting in a distribution covering large swathes of South America and much of sub-Saharan Africa. While there is evidence for mating in some of the related trypanosome species, Trypanosoma brucei

Five crossbred cattle infected with Trypanosoma vivax (Likoni) by Glossina morsitans developed capillary haemorrhages at the onset of parasitaemia, followed by the presence of occult blood in faecal samples and eventually melena. Two animals required treatment to survive, on days 13 and 38 respectively. The other three animals cleared their parasitaemias without treatment. Packed cell volume (PCV) levels decreased in all animals to levels ranging from 7.5 to 17%. Relapse in a treated animal initiated marked haemorrhage and a loss of 14 PCV units during a six-day period. Thrombocytopenia was co

The present paper reports information obtained between 1982 and 1989 in the tropical lowlands of the Atlantic coast of Colombia. The studies confirmed that Trypanosoma vivax was widely but unevenly distributed within the study area and that incidence ranged from sporadic transmission to localised epidemics in which virtually all susceptible animals become infected within a period of 3 months. Quantitative epidemiological methods substantiated impressions of previous workers that T. vivax infections were associated with low-lying swampy areas and tabanid activity. Overt clinical trypanosomosis

Zebu x European (Z x E) crossbred cattle suffered a more severe course of disease than Boran cattle when infected with Trypanosoma vivax (Likoni) by Glossina morsitans. All Z x E animals in this study required Berenil treatment while all Borans self-cured the infection without treatment. The more severe disease in Z x E animals was characterized by longer periods of patent infection and fever, more severe anaemia and greater likelihood of haemorrhage. Cattle previously infected and cured with Berenil showed resistance and self-cured challenge infections. After self-cure cattle remained immune

Studies of antigenic variation in Trypanosoma vivax have been hindered by its low infectivity to laboratory hosts and difficulties in obtaining defined cloned populations. The recent isolation of mouse-infective T. vivax has partially overcome the first problem. We have developed a highly efficient cloning technique which has been applied to the isolation of a collection of 71 clones, representing 31 distinct variable antigen types, of mouse-infective T. vivax from Nigeria. This serodeme showed no cross-reaction with several T. brucei-group serodemes, but some cross-reaction with naturally occ

The use of the indirect fluorescent antibody test and complementary blood smear examinations in Colombia has shown that Trypanosoma vivax infections of cattle may be considered to be distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical areas of the country. However within this distribution the prevalence showed wide variations between herds and localised epidemic situations could occur at the herd and village level. the examination of sequential serum samples from 2 localities has given additional information on incidence and on transmission patterns.

The Guyanese strain of Trypanosoma vivax is pathogenic for the local Brahman zebu; the experimental infection of 19 one-year old cattle was followed by a moderate and transitory fever, a drop in packed cell volume (PCV) and a quick and marked weight loss of 10 to 17 kg one month after as compared to the 16 non-infected animals. Other symptoms were associated with the parasitaemia: diarrhoea, swollen haematic glands on the neck and the flank, lachrymation, weakness. Despite a trypanocidal treatment injected one month post-infection, one animal died and the weight losses of others were not compe

Six donkeys (Equus asinus) were purchased locally. To screen them before and during Trypanosoma vivax infection, thin and thick blood smears, temperature, haematocrit centrifuge technique (HCT), packed cell volume (PCV), white blood cell counts, and indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) were done for Babesia equi. For the IFAT, an anti-horse conjugate was used. In spite of patent B. equi or T. vivax parasitaemia, the donkeys' temperatures remained below 38.5 degrees C; PCV was depressed more in B. equi infection than in T. vivax infection. Four out of the 6 donkeys had B. equi antibo

The pathology of Trypanosoma vivax (stock Y-486) in East African goats (Galla cross Masai) and Friesian cattle was studied sequentially. In both goats and cattle parasitaemia was detectable six to seven days after inoculation with 1 X 10(5) trypanosomes. The goats were more susceptible than cattle as indicated by higher parasitaemias, more severe anaemia and death in 25 per cent of the goats. The major pathological changes occurred in the lymph nodes, spleen, eyes, pituitary gland, testicles and heart. There was marked, generalised lymph node enlargement associated with an increase in the numb

Samples for histological studies were taken from the genitalia of 14 bulls (five infected with Trypanosoma vivax, five with T. congolense and four uninfected control animals), slaughtered 12, 22 or 30 weeks post-infection. Infection with Y58 strain of T. vivax and strain 2295 of T. congolense caused various grades of lesions in the male reproductive organs, especially the testes and epididymides. T. congolense produced more severe degenerative changes than T. vivax. It is concluded that in long-standing cases, the result of trypanosome infection is either serious infertility or even sterility.

The characterization of four Trypanosoma vivax isolates from Colombia in South America showed that although minor phenotypic differences existed between them, these parasites are antigenically related and belong to a single serodeme. Characterization by isoenzyme assay, karyotyping and DNA probe analysis, showed the Colombian isolates to be more similar to the West African than to Kenyan T. vivax. There was, however, little serological cross-reactivity between South American and African groups of T. vivax. Although the T. vivax isolates from Colombia were pathogenic for dairy calves which show

We have investigated in vitro platelet aggregation in platelet rich plasma from Trypanosoma vivax infected and control sheep using the dual channel Payton Aggregometer. Final concentrations of the following inducing agents were used: 1.2 um ADP, 6.2 ug collagen, 1.2 ug ristocetin and 1 u thrombin. These showed that there was a significantly reduced aggregation of platelets from infected sheep (13.4 +/- 1.1 pc at week 3 post infection when compared with control sheep PRP 95.0 +/- 1.0pc; P less than 0.001) using ADP. Similar differences were also obtained with other inducing agents. Preliminary

Eight Zebu cattle were infected with Trypanosoma vivax stock Y58, while 8 served as uninfected controls. The infected animals developed early leukopenia due to concomitant lymphopenia and neutropenia. It is suggested that an increase in trypanosomal antigens and neuraminidase in the infected cattle at this time may have an effect on peripheral leukocytes.
