Tuberculosis (TB) infection is still common and remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in underdeveloped and developing nations. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the sixth commonest extrapulmonary site to be affected after lymphatic, genitourinary, bones and joints, miliary and meningeal involvement. Manifestations can be non-specific and mimic many conditions, including malignancies. Findings from endoscopy and radiological imaging are myriad, and depend on the stage of the disease and the time at which investigations are carried out. Hence, diagnosis can be dif

Gastrointestinal tuberculosis continues to occur sporadically in hospitals in the British Isles. Accurate diagnosis may enable its rare but lethal complications to be anticipated. Pathology, clinical features and treatment are reviewed. The use of antituberculous chemotherapy and corticosteroids is discussed with reference to 14 cases of gastrointestinal tuberculosis seen in Southampton between 1951 and 1973.

Proven or suspected intestinal tuberculosis was diagnosed in 23 (46 per cent) of 50 patients with smear-positive, cavitating pulmonary tuberculosis. The diagnosis was regarded as proven in 14 patients and suspected in the remaining nine. The frequency of proven gastrointestinal disease increased with the severity of the pulmonary tuberculosis. Small intestinal disease was encountered in only two patients. Small mucosal lesions in the caecum were the most commonly detected pathological features. Colonoscopy was of particular value in establishing the diagnosis, which could not be predicted from

Gastrointestinal (GI) tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant problem worldwide, and may involve the luminal GI tract from oral cavity to perianal area in addition to associated viscera and peritoneum. Although GI TB more commonly affects immunocompromised hosts, it can also occur in immunocompetent people. Diagnosis is difficult because it usually mimics a malignancy or inflammatory bowel disease. A high index of clinical suspicion and appropriate use of combined investigative methods help in early diagnosis, and reduce morbidity and mortality. Anti-TB therapy is the same as for pulmonary dis

Isolated tuberculosis of gastrointestinal tract is a very rare disease most commonly localized in the ileo-cecal region (over 85% of the cases). The main object of surgical therapy is intraperitoneal tuberculosis (IP-TB), which leads to complications such as bowel obstruction, perforation, fistulation and bleeding. Since gastrointestinal tuberculosis can mimic symptoms found in Crohns' disease and ileocecal cancer, definitive diagnosis can only be obtained by the finding of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in tissue and stool sample as well as by positive microbacterial cultivation. A 35 year old fe

We describe a rare case of tuberculosis with mainly gastrointestinal problems. The 52-year-aged female patient came to hospital with unclear pain in the lower abdomen and ascites that was refractory to therapy. The computed tomography of the thorax showed right-sided confluating lymphoid nodes, the CT of the abdomen showed ascites and nodular structures near the coecum. Tissue samples were taken from the mucosa of the colon, the inflammatory altered peritoneum, the left bronchus of the upper lobe and the confluating lymphoid nodes in the mediastinum during colonoscopy, diagnostic laparoscopy a

We report a case of gastrointestinal manifestation of tuberculosis (TB). A 52 year-old female patient was admitted into another hospital with unspecified gastrointestinal complaints. A computer tomography (CT) and a coloscopy showed a mild stenosis in the ileocecal region. The routine pulmonary X-ray showed a nodule, the cytology of the sputum was positive for tuberculosis. The patient was therefore transferred to our hospital. Following the anti-tuberculostastic treatment, the patient's abdominal condition improved but the symptoms reappeared weeks later. A sonography showed biliary calculus.

Incidence of tuberculosis has increased in the Netherlands in recent years, especially among immigrants. Nearly half of all patients with tuberculosis have extrapulmonary disease; in 5% of these patients it is localized in the gastrointestinal tract. Despite the low incidence of gastrointestinal tuberculosis we recently established this diagnosis in three of our patients, who demonstrated tuberculosis within the oesophagus, colon and pancreas, respectively. They were successfully treated, but only after a long diagnostic process.

We report an elderly male who presented with history of chronic diarrhoea. The patient underwent colonoscopy and CT scan of the abdomen which strongly suggested tuberculosis; however histopathology showed presence of budding forms of Histoplasma capsulatum. The patient was started on oral itraconazole on which he improved remarkably.

We describe the pathology of gastrointestinal tuberculosis in three cows. Gross lesions were found in the jejunum and ileum in all cases, and were characterized by button-shaped ulcers in the mucosa overlying Peyer's patches and adjacent mucosa. One case had similar changes in the pyloric region of the abomasum. In the affected intestinal segments, marked granulomatous inflammation effaced the lymphoid follicles of Peyer's patches and often extended transmurally. Transmural granulomatous inflammation was also found in the abomasum of one cow. Acid-fast bacilli were identified by the Ziehl-Neel

This article discusses the range of manifestations of tuberculosis (TB) of the abdomen, including involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, the peritoneum, mesentery, omentum, abdominal lymph nodes, solid abdominal organs, the genital system and the abdominal aorta. Abdominal TB is a diagnostic challenge, particularly when pulmonary TB is absent. It may mimic many other abdominal diseases, both clinically and radiologically. An early correct diagnosis, however, is important in order to ensure proper treatment and a favorable outcome. Modern imaging is a cornerstone in the early diagnosis of a

BACKGROUND: Perforation and fistulae, though uncommon, are serious complications of gastrointestinal tuberculosis. Patients with acute tuberculous perforation are subjected to surgery, whereas localized perforation and fistulae with subtle clinical signs are detected by barium contrast examination. There has been no report on radiological series regarding the incidence of perforation and fistulae, detected by barium contrast studies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of barium contrast studies of 684 proven cases of gastrointestinal tuberculosis seen over a period of 15 years was

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a disease of great relevance since it is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is an unusual presentation. It is defined as the involvement of any segment of the digestive tract, associated viscera, and peritoneum. The study's main objective is to collect information from autopsies of patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal tuberculosis in a Pathology reference center in Colombia.
METHODS: This is a retrospective and descriptive study of autopsy reports. A total of 4,500 autopsies were performed between Janua

In this editorial, we comment on the article by Ali et al published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Clinical Cases. This case report shed light on a particularly rare manifestation of this disease-primary gastrointestinal tuberculosis (GTB) presenting as gastric outlet obstruction. GTB presents diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific symptoms and lack of highly accurate diagnostic algorithms. This editorial synthesizes epidemiological data, risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical presentations, diagnostic methods, and therapies to raise awareness about GTB. GTB constitutes 1%-3%

Tuberculosis involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, peritoneum, and associated viscera is an uncommon but well described entity. While peritoneal tuberculosis and tuberculous enteritis are more common, involvement of the esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, anus, liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas can occur. Diagnosis is challenging as cases often mimic neoplasm or inflammatory bowel disease. In this review we outline the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic testing, and treatment strategies pertaining to such cases.

Abdominal tuberculosis is an increasingly common disease that poses diagnostic challenge, as the nonspecific features of the disease which may lead to diagnostic delays and development of complications. This condition is regarded as a great mimicker of other abdominal pathology. A high index of suspicion is an important factor in early diagnosis. Abdominal involvement may occur in the gastrointestinal tract, peritoneum, lymphnodes or solid viscera. Various investigative methods have been used to aid in the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis. The purpose of this study was to describe the CT and MR imaging findings of tuberculosis of the gastrointestinal tract. Abdominal and pelvic CT scans and MRI studies of 6 patients with histopathological and microbiological proven intestinal tuberculosis were reviewed by two radiologists in consensus. Location and pattern of bowel wall involvement, signal intensities in relation to the normal bowel wall, pattern of enhancement and associated abdominal abnormalities were evaluated. Gastrointestinal tract tuberculosis may be limited to one bowel segment, with the cecum and ileocecal valve as the

Gastro-intestinal tuberculosis (TB) continues to give rise to diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Its increasing incidence and multiple and non-specificity of symptoms and signs require special attention to establish a prompt diagnosis and not to delay treatment. The authors describe on case of colonic TB presenting with multiple episodes of subocclusion suggesting a stenosing neoplasm of the caecum.

The various ultrasound (US) findings in 90 patients with abdominal (gastrointestinal, peritoneal, mesenteric and lymph node) tuberculosis (TB) studied in an area of high incidence of TB over a 1 year period were analysed. The lesions encountered were intestinal (n = 31), extraintestinal (n = 39), or a combination (n = 20). The extraintestinal lesions included free and loculated ascites (n = 36), localized ascites ('Club Sandwich sign') (n = 4), adhesions (n = 14), peritoneal thickening (n = 14), peritoneal nodules (n = 3), lymphadenopathy (n = 23) and cold abscesses (n = 10)-of these, the pres
