Laryngeal tuberculosis.

Laryngeal tuberculosis is the most frequent granulomatous disease of the larynx. The disease has changed its behaviour with regard to average age of onset site and type of lesion. Laryngeal tuberculosis is usually secondary to, or at least contemporary with, pulmonary tuberculosis. Other recents studies, however, conclude by accepting a frequency of up to 20% for primary laryngeal tuberculosis. The age of presentation is between 41-50 years. Among the risk factors identified are the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, malnutrition and immunodeficiency. The predominant symptom was dysphonia (90%)

[Laryngeal tuberculosis].

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to highlight the diagnostic problems posed by laryngeal tuberculosis and to incite practitioners to seek it more frequently, especially with the current resurgence in tuberculosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven cases of laryngeal tuberculosis were diagnosed over a period of 4 years and included in a retrospective study. RESULTS: We identified seven men and four women (average age 43 years). Dysphonia was the primary symptom. Direct laryngoscopy revealed more often a budding ulcerative aspect and allowed us to perform laryngeal biopsy; the pathologic stu

Laryngeal tuberculosis.

Since the introduction of antituberculous medications, the incidence of laryngeal tuberculosis (TB) has decreased and remains stable. However, with the incidence of TB increasing, mainly caused by the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic, the incidence of laryngeal involvement may be on the rise. The main presenting symptom of laryngeal TB is dysphonia. The diagnosis is confirmed with the identification of granulomatous inflammation, caseating granulomas, and acid-fast bacilli on histopathologic examination of biopsied laryngeal tissue. However, making the diagnosis difficult can be the

Laryngeal tuberculosis.

Laryngeal lesions observed in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis are most likely tuberculous. Although tuberculosis and carcinoma may be indistinguishable clinically and radiographically, specific radiographic studies better delineate the lesion and may suggest its true etiology. Five cases of laryngeal tuberculosis referred to M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute as carcinoma of the larynx are described and illustrated. In the acute exudative type, inflammatory disease was suspected, but in the chronic localized lesion, carcinoma was the primary consideration. The histologic diagnosis

Laryngeal tuberculosis: CT findings.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the CT findings of laryngeal tuberculosis (TB). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: CT scans, laryngoscopic examinations, and chest radiographs of 12 patients (21-63 years old) with histologically (n = 8) or bacteriologically (n = 4) confirmed laryngeal TB were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Bilateral diffuse thickening of the vocal cords and diffuse thickening and increased density of the aryepiglottic folds and paralaryngeal tissues were present in all patients. Diffuse thickening of the epiglottis was observed in seven patients. In four patients,

Laryngeal Tuberculosis Mimicking Laryngeal Carcinoma: A Case Report.

Laryngeal tuberculosis (LTB) is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that can clinically and radiologically resemble laryngeal carcinoma, leading to potential misdiagnosis. We report the case of a 53-year-old man with a history of chronic smoking, no known tuberculosis or BCG vaccination, who presented with progressive dyspnea, dysphonia, and significant weight loss. Laryngoscopy revealed ulcerative lesions involving the anterior commissure, right ventricular strip, arytenoid fold, and epiglottis. CT imaging suggested malignancy, but a biopsy confirmed LTB with pulmonary involvement. The

Primary laryngeal tuberculosis mimicking laryngeal carcinoma: CT scan features.

Laryngeal tuberculosis is a rare disease. It is almost always associated with pulmonary tuberculosis. It occurs generally in adults without BCG vaccination or in cases of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. On laryngoscopy and imaging, it often simulates laryngeal carcinoma, and confirmation is always histological. We report the case of a 36-year-old man who presented to our hospital with dysphonia and dysphagia. Laryngoscopy revealed a lesion of the left vocal cord and the ventricular strip. CT scan found focal, regular thickening of the left vocal cord, associated with irregular thicken

Laryngeal tuberculosis: a neglected diagnosis.

A 24-year-old woman visited the Ear Nose Throat (ENT) outpatient department with complaints of hoarseness for 2 months not responding to conservative management. Laryngoscopic examination revealed a whitish ulceroproliferative lesion in the anterior commissure and anterior two-thirds of bilateral true vocal cords with surrounding necrosis. In view of the above findings, the patient was planned for biopsy under general anaesthesia. Intraoperative findings showed multiple whitish necrotic friable tissue involving anterior two-thirds of bilateral false vocal cords, ventricle, bilateral true vocal

Laryngeal tuberculosis: A case of a non-healing laryngeal lesion.

We report a case of laryngeal tuberculosis in a 47-year-old Korean man. Laryngeal tuberculosis is rare and currently accounts for less than 1% of all cases of tuberculosis. Clinical features of laryngeal tuberculosis include hoarseness, odynophagia and dyspnoea. Macroscopically, laryngeal tuberculosis may mimic laryngeal carcinoma, chronic laryngitis or laryngeal candidiasis. The diagnosis is often delayed due to a low index of clinical suspicion and hence may pose a significant public health risk. Laryngeal tuberculosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients who presen

[Laryngeal tuberculosis is not such a rare disease].

Laryngeal tuberculosis used to be the most common disease of the larynx at the beginning of the 20th century. As the incidence of tuberculosis decreased, laryngeal tuberculosis almost disappeared. The increase in the incidence of tuberculosis during the last two decades was accompanied by an increase in the incidence of laryngeal tuberculosis. Laryngeal tuberculosis is characterized by a wide variety of symptoms ranging from a process restricted only to the larynx, to a multiple system disease. The laryngeal findings are not specific and may imitate other chronic diseases and tumors of the lar
