Molecular assay for the identification of Setaria tundra.

We report the molecular characterization of the amplification products obtained by specific PCR experiments aimed to identify the 5S ribosomal spacer of Setaria tundra specimens isolated from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in north Italy, which represent the first record of the parasite in this country. Three different fragments of approximately 400, 800, and 1200 bp (base pairs) are produced. Sequence analyses showed that all three fragments share a very high level of similarity to 5S spacer sequences of some Setaria species and other filariae present in genebank. Based on these sequences, we

Environmental drivers of increased ecosystem respiration in a warming tundra.

Arctic and alpine tundra ecosystems are large reservoirs of organic carbon1,2. Climate warming may stimulate ecosystem respiration and release carbon into the atmosphere3,4. The magnitude and persistency of this stimulation and the environmental mechanisms that drive its variation remain uncertain5-7. This hampers the accuracy of global land carbon-climate feedback projections7,8. Here we synthesize 136 datasets from 56 open-top chamber in situ warming experiments located at 28 arctic and alpine tundra sites which have been running for less than 1 year up to 25 years. We show that a mean rise

Setaria tundra microfilariae in reindeer and other cervids in Finland.

Harmful parasites of the wild northern boreal mammals are still surprisingly poorly studied. In 2003-2006, a peritonitis outbreak caused by the filarioid nematode, Setaria tundra, emerged in Finland's reindeer population. In order to gain knowledge about the basic biology, epidemiology, and transmission dynamics of this parasite, samples for S. tundra were collected from reindeer and other cervids during the follow-up period 2004-2006. Using morphology and molecular biology methods, we describe here S. tundra's first larval stage, microfilaria (smf), for the first time scientifically. The prev

Digital necrobacillosis in Norwegian wild tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus).

Outbreaks of digital necrobacillosis in Norwegian wild tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) are described. The outbreaks occurred in late summer and autumn 2007 and 2008, subsequent to periods with an unusually high number of days with precipitation and high air temperature. Lesions were generally restricted to one foot and the disease incidence was highest in calves. Single limbs from 20 animals and six whole carcasses were submitted for laboratory examination. Gross lesions were characterized by swelling of the fetlock to coronary band area and cutaneous sinus tracts with sparse disc

Critical review of mercury fates and contamination in the Arctic tundra ecosystem.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in tundra region has raised substantial concerns, especially since the first report of atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs) in the Polar Regions. During the past decade, steady progress has been made in the research of Hg cycling in the Polar Regions. This has generated a unique opportunity to survey the whole Arctic in respect to Hg issue and to find out new discoveries. However, there are still considerable knowledge gaps and debates on the fate of Hg in the Arctic and Antarctica, especially regarding the importance and significance of AMDEs vs. net Hg load

Biogeochemical cycling of methylmercury in lakes and tundra watersheds of Arctic Alaska.

The fate of atmospherically deposited and environmentally active Hg is uncertain in the Arctic, and of greatest toxicological concern is the transformation to monometh-ylmercury (MMHg). Lake/watershed mass balances were developed to examine MMHg cycling in four northern Alaska lakes near the ecological research station at Toolik Lake (68 degrees 38' N, 149 degrees 36' W). Primary features of the cycle are watershed runoff, sedimentary production and mobilization, burial, and photodecomposition in the water column. The principal source of MMHg is in situ benthic production with 80-91% of total

Phosphorus Interactions with Iron in Undisturbed and Disturbed Arctic Tundra Ecosystems.

Phosphorus (P) limitation often constrains biological processes in Arctic tundra ecosystems. Although adsorption to soil minerals may limit P bioavailability and export from soils into aquatic systems, the contribution of mineral phases to P retention in Arctic tundra is poorly understood. Our objective was to use X-ray absorption spectroscopy to characterize P speciation and associations with soil minerals along hillslope toposequences and in undisturbed and disturbed low-lying wet sedge tundra on the North Slope, AK. Biogenic mats comprised of short-range ordered iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides were

Traditional Living Habits of the Taz Tundra Population: A Paleoparasitological Study.

An excavation of the Vesakoyakha II-IV and Nyamboyto I burial grounds was conducted during the 2014 field season, and soil samples from intact burials dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, respectively, were analyzed to determine interactions between parasites and host/vectors. Considering the discovery of Diphyllobothrium sp. and Taenia sp. eggs in soil samples from the pelvic region, diphyllobothriasis was the most frequent helminthic infection among the Taz Nenets. The Nyamboyto Nenets mainly consumed uncooked fish, while the Vesakoyakha Nenets had a bigger variety in food choices, inclu

Identification of carbon dioxide flux drivers in a High Arctic tundra environment.

We analysed the carbon dioxide fluxes from vegetation, measured by portable flux chambers, and several meteo-climatic and environmental variables obtained during six summer campaigns at two different sites in the High-Arctic tundra in the Bayelva basin near Ny Ålesund, Svalbard, during the period 2019-2025. The two sites have similar climatic conditions and vegetation cover, in terms of species distribution and abundance, but different distance from the glaciers. The measured fluxes provided information on Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), Ecosystem Respiration (ER) and Gross Primary Production (G

Global plant trait relationships extend to the climatic extremes of the tundra biome.

The majority of variation in six traits critical to the growth, survival and reproduction of plant species is thought to be organised along just two dimensions, corresponding to strategies of plant size and resource acquisition. However, it is unknown whether global plant trait relationships extend to climatic extremes, and if these interspecific relationships are confounded by trait variation within species. We test whether trait relationships extend to the cold extremes of life on Earth using the largest database of tundra plant traits yet compiled. We show that tundra plants demonstrate rem

New records of Lumbricidae and Collembola in anthropogenic soils of East European tundra.

The terrestrial environment of the East European tundra consists of a mosaic of habitat types. In addition to the natural habitat diversity, various human-influenced types may occur. In the town of Vorkuta, Komi Republic, Russia the manure-enriched soils near hydrogen sulfide springs were observed. This site represents an unusually nutrient-rich location with considerable development of organic soils, in contrast to the naturally forming soils in East European tundra which are typically thin and nutrient poor. In these organic soils, two species of Lumbricidae and two species of Collembola pre

Carbon-degrading enzyme activities stimulated by increased nutrient availability in Arctic tundra soils.

Climate-induced warming of the Arctic tundra is expected to increase nutrient availability to soil microbes, which in turn may accelerate soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition. We increased nutrient availability via fertilization to investigate the microbial response via soil enzyme activities. Specifically, we measured potential activities of seven enzymes at four temperatures in three soil profiles (organic, organic/mineral interface, and mineral) from untreated native soils and from soils which had been fertilized with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) since 1989 (23 years) and 2006 (six ye

Demography and outcomes of frozen tongue: a scoping review of Scandinavian tundra tongue cases.

BACKGROUND: Children occasionally adhere their tongues to cold metal surfaces during winter ("tundra tongue"), but little is known about the epidemiology and outcomes of these cases. OBJECTIVES: To explore the following questions: who experiences tundra tongue, under which circumstances does it occur, and what are the outcomes? METHODS: We conducted a scoping review to identify case reports published in historical newspapers from Norway, Sweden and Denmark using national library databases. Epidemiological data were charted manually from newspaper items describing literal frozen tongues. RES

Large emissions of CO2 and CH4 due to active-layer warming in Arctic tundra.

Climate warming may accelerate decomposition of Arctic soil carbon, but few controlled experiments have manipulated the entire active layer. To determine surface-atmosphere fluxes of carbon dioxide and methane under anticipated end-of-century warming, here we used heating rods to warm (by 3.8 °C) to the depth of permafrost in polygonal tundra in Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow), Alaska and measured fluxes over two growing seasons. We show that ecosystem respiration is ~30% higher in warmed plots than in control plots (0.99 μmol m-2 s-1 versus 0.67 μmol m-2 s-1, p < 0.0001, n = 79). Additionally, th

Inhibition of Methylmercury and Methane Formation by Nitrous Oxide in Arctic Tundra Soil Microcosms.

Climate warming causes permafrost thaw predicted to increase toxic methylmercury (MeHg) and greenhouse gas [i.e., methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O)] formation. A microcosm incubation study with Arctic tundra soil over 145 days demonstrates that N2O at 0.1 and 1 mM markedly inhibited microbial MeHg formation, methanogenesis, and sulfate reduction, while it slightly promoted CO2 production. Microbial community analyses indicate that N2O decreased the relative abundances of methanogenic archaea and microbial clades implicated in sulfate reduction and MeHg formation. Fol

A tundra of sickness: the uneasy relationship between toxic waste, TEK, and cultural survival.

In 1992 an abandoned federal radioactive waste dump was discovered in Arctic Alaska. The discovery of this site, a byproduct of the Atomic Energy Commission program known as Project Chariot, sent shockwaves throughout Iñupiaq communities and ignited a heated controversy over the health effects of subsisting on a "tundra of sickness." Drawing on thirty months of ethnographic research in Arctic Alaska, this paper explores a host of environmental, social, and moral uncertainties sparked by toxic waste. Anthropological claims regarding the extent to which "traditional ecological knowledge" will em

Insights from Bacillus anthracis strains isolated from permafrost in the tundra zone of Russia.

This article describes Bacillus anthracis strains isolated during an outbreak of anthrax on the Yamal Peninsula in the summer of 2016 and independently in Yakutia in 2015. A common feature of these strains is their conservation in permafrost, from which they were extracted either due to the thawing of permafrost (Yamal strains) or as the result of paleontological excavations (Yakut strains). All strains isolated on the Yamal share an identical genotype belonging to lineage B.Br.001/002, pointing to a common source of infection in a territory over 250 km in length. In contrast, during the excav
