Whipple bacilli within the tunica media of pulmonary arteries.

In the lungs of two patients dying with Whipple's disease, we found Schiff-positive bacilli within the tunica media of many pulmonary arteries. Tissue was examined from all five lobes of the lungs in both cases. There were no pulmonary emboli and no alveolar lesions of Whipple's disease. Focal degeneration of the tunica media was conspicuous in areas where bacilli were present, and at some sites there was some overlying intimal proliferation. Little inflammatory response was present. All the bacilli within the tunica media were free as single organisms or small clumps, and there were none with

Injury of the tunica media in fatal rupture of the vertebral artery.

The histologic findings in seven cases of traumatic basal subarachnoid hemorrhage from rupture of a vertebral artery are reported. In all cases, blows to the head or neck resulted in minor injury to the cranial or cervical soft tissues but the ipsilateral intracranial segment of the vertebral artery was the site of a longitudinal transmural tear. In addition to rupture, the arterial wall proximal and distal to the site of rupture showed evidence of distortional injury of the tunica media. These traumatic lesions appeared as patchy anuclear regions of the media with distinctive pallor of smooth

A cell-based mechanical model of coronary artery tunica media.

A three-dimensional cell-based mechanical model of coronary artery tunica media is proposed. The model is composed of spherical cells forming a hexagonal close-packed lattice. Tissue anisotropy is taken into account by varying interaction forces with the direction of intercellular connection. Several cell-centre interaction potentials for repulsion and attraction are considered, including the Hertz contact model and its neo-Hookean extension, the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts model of adhesive contact, and a wormlike chain model. The model is validated against data from in vitro uni-axial tension te

Morphometry of structural preservation of tunica media in aged and hypertensive human intracerebral arteries.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Medial smooth muscle cell necrosis has been reported as a lesion that may precede angionecrosis, which is a major cause of not only hypertensive brain hemorrhage but also lacunar infarct. We morphometrically studied a loss of smooth muscle cells in the media of cerebral arteries in relation to clinical risk factors. METHODS: The lateral striate, ie, perforating arteries and the medullary arteries in the subcortical white matter of the temporal lobe (100 to 400 microns in diameter) were histologically investigated in 121 autopsied brains. Medial area was measured quanti

Lesions of the tunica media in traumatic rupture of vertebral arteries: histologic and biochemical studies.

Discontinuous non-circumferential lesions of tunica media were observed in four cases of traumatic rupture of the vertebral artery. We hypothesize that these lesions were due to mechanical disruption of smooth muscle cells and the liberation of catabolic enzymes with subsequent degradation of the arterial media. To test this hypothesis, healthy vertebral arteries were incubated with crude extracts of bovine smooth muscle cytosol in attempt to reproduce the histological changes of the arterial media in traumatized vertebral arteries. We observed cytosol-induced degradation of tunica media, char

[Three-dimensional analysis of the tunica media of umbilical arteries. Scanning electron microscopy study].

The three-dimensional media structure of the umbilical arteries in their various functional states has up to now been object of numerous investigations, which are predominantly based on light-microscopic findings and have come to extremely differing results. For that reason the electron microscope method with an optically higher resolution was chosen for this thesis. In total, 20 umbilical cords were recovered, and in each case one of the two umbilical cord arteries was kept in a condition of non-contraction by means of perfusion fixation immediately after the omphalotomy. After the necessary

Ruptured cerebral fusiform aneurysm with mucopolysaccharide deposits in the tunica media in a patient with Marfan syndrome.

Although aortic or cardiac complications are common in patients with Marfan syndrome, the presence of an intracranial aneurysm is comparatively rare. In this study, the authors report on their experience with resection of a ruptured fusiform aneurysm of the posterior cerebral artery in a 30-year-old woman with Marfan syndrome. Microscopic examination of the resected tissue showed many Alcian blue-staining deposits, consistent with the presence of mucopolysaccharide in the tunica media and focal fragmentation of the internal elastic lamina.

Ischemic Stroke Secondary to Arterial Tunica Media Embolism Following Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: An Uncommon Etiology.

Ischemic stroke following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a rare complication, with an overall incidence of 0.56%. Most embolic strokes result from the dislodgement of atherosclerotic plaques, thrombi formed on catheter surfaces, procedural maneuvers, or, less commonly, air or metallic emboli originating from fractured guidewires. We present a unique case of stroke following PCI due to a previously unreported mechanism-arterial tunica media embolization associated with arterial access. A 57-year-old female presented with chest pain at rest and with exertion, accompanied by episodes

Quantitative evaluation of IVL: based on the tunica media gypsum calcification model and a prospective animal study.

BACKGROUND: Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL), an emerging adjunctive therapeutic modality, demonstrates potential in managing severely calcified lesions. However, its quantitative efficiency in disrupting calcifications with different characteristics, as well as the degree of damage to normal arteries, remains to be confirmed. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to: (i) quantitatively evaluate the efficacy of IVL in disrupting different types of calcifications, and (ii) assess the impact of IVL on normal vascular structures. METHODS: The gypsum models with different thicknesses and eccentricities we

Novel signaling axis of FHOD1-RNF213-Col1α/Col3α in the pathogenesis of hypertension-induced tunica media thickening.

Hypertension-induced tunica media thickening (TMT) is the most important fundamental for the subsequent complications like stroke and cardiovascular diseases. Pathogenically, TMT originates from both vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) hypertrophy due to synthesizing more amount of intracellular contractile proteins and excess secretion of extracellular matrix. However, what key molecules are involved in the pathogenesis of TMT is unknown. We hypothesize that formin homology 2 domain-containing protein 1 (FHOD1), an amply expressed mediator for assembly of thin actin filament in VSMCs, is a k

Necrotic Change of Tunica Media Plays a Key Role in the Development of Coronary Artery Lesions in Kawasaki Disease.

BACKGROUND: Alarmins resulting from cell death or oxidative stress are involved in the development of Kawasaki disease (KD) vasculitis. In a previous study, we demonstrated the potential role of interleukin (IL)-33 as an alarmin in the development of KD vasculitis. Although edematous dissociation (necrotic change) of the tunica media is thought to be a major source of IL-33 in KD vasculitis, it has not yet been elucidated. METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated the impact of IL-33 released from necrotic human coronary artery smooth muscle cells (HCASMCs) on human coronary artery endothelial cel

Decreased smooth muscle cells and fibrous thickening of the tunica media in peripheral pulmonary artery stenosis in Alagille syndrome.

Alagille syndrome is caused by mutations in genes involved in NOTCH signaling, specifically JAG1 and NOTCH2, and is associated with a high rate of peripheral pulmonary artery stenosis. In this study, we report the case of an infant with Alagille syndrome caused by a JAG1 mutation, who succumbed to acute exacerbation of right heart failure due to severe peripheral pulmonary artery stenosis. The autopsy revealed that the peripheral pulmonary arteries were significantly stenosed, exhibiting hypoplasia and thickened vessel walls. Histological examination of the pulmonary artery walls showed a decr

Smooth muscle cells of the coronary arterial tunica media express tumor necrosis factor-alpha and proliferate during acute rejection of rabbit cardiac allografts.

Graft coronary arteriosclerosis (GCA) frequently limits the long-term success of cardiac transplantation. The pathogenic mechanisms of and stimuli that provoke GCA remain uncertain. Whatever the initiating factors, deranged control of smooth muscle cells (SMC) proliferation likely contributes to the intimal hyperplasia that produces obstructive lesions. To identify mediators that may contribute to ongoing modulation of SMC functions during acute rejection and to explore the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of graft coronary arteriosclerosis, we studied the kinetics of proliferation and the expre

Comparison of spermatic vein histology in patients with and without varicocele.

The aim of this study was to investigate and compare histological characteristics of spermatic veins in patients with and without varicocele. Between February 2009 and July 2009, spermatic veins were obtained from 13 patients with varicocele. Microsurgical subinguinal low ligation was performed in all patients. Spermatic veins of patients without varicocele were obtained from 12 patients who underwent radical nephrectomy. Histologically, sections of veins were stained with haematoxylin and eosin. Mean tunica adventitia thickness size of the spermatic veins was 0.35 ± 0.08 mm and 0.22 ± 0.1 mm

Vascular lesions of the gastrointestinal system in Whipple's disease.

In five cases of Whipple's disease the vessels in several organs of the gastrointestinal system were carefully examined for PAS-positive bacilli. Bacilli were particularly abundant in the arteries of the small intestinal serosa and the liver, but they were also present in stomach, colon, gallbladder and mesenteric lymph nodes. The predominant site of involvement was the arterial tunica media. In addition to focal degeneration and fibrosis in the tunica media, other local reactions included arteritis and intimal proliferation. Within the tunica media and less often the endothelium the bacilli w

Connecting the Dots: How Injury in the Arterial Wall Contributes to Atherosclerotic Disease.

PURPOSE: The occurrence and development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, which can result in severe outcomes, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, loss of limb, renal failure, and infarction of the gut, are strongly associated with injury to the intimal component of the arterial wall whether via the inside-out or outside-in pathways. The role of injury to the tunica media as a pathway of atherosclerosis initiation is an underresearched area. This review focuses on potential pathways to vessel wall injury as well as current experimental and clinical research in the middle-aged and e

The pathology of Kawasaki disease aortitis: a study of 37 cases.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis syndrome that occurs most frequently in children. Most clinical and pathological studies have focused on its coronary artery lesions. To date, no detailed studies of the aorta have been conducted. We studied KD autopsy cases with the aims of clarifying the time-course of changes in aortic lesions, the differences in the inflammatory cells and degree of inflammation at various aortic sites, and the progression of the inflammation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study materials were aortic specimens taken from 37 KD autopsy cases (acute pha

Chemoreceptive epithelioid cells in the chicken aorta. An electron microscopical study.

Aggregations of granulated epithelioid cells exist in the chicken aorta. In the present study, the locational characteristics of the epithelioid cells were investigated via an electron microscopic approach. Epithelioid cells were found mainly in two regions; the tunica interna just below the endothelial cell layers, and the intermediate region of the tunica media. In the former, the epithelioid cells were in contact with endothelial cells and sometimes directly exposed to the aortic lumen. No contact between the epithelioid cells and the nerve endings was observed in this region. On the other
