We have studied the effect of two glucocorticoid hormones: hydrocortisone and its synthetic analogue methylprednisolone on the regeneration activity of head and tail blastema of the Girardia tigrina planarian. The regeneration activity was studied in head and tail blastema formed after resection by means of lifetime computer morphometry and immunohistochemical labeling of neoblasts. The search for orthologous proteins-glucocorticoid receptors (hydrocortisone) was performed using the SmedGD database of the Schmidtea mediterranea planarian. The results indicate that both hormones influence the r

The free-living flatworm Macrostomum lignano is a model organism for evolutionary and developmental biology studies. Recently, an unusual karyotypic diversity was revealed in this species. Specifically, worms are either 'normal' 2n = 8, or they are aneuploid with one or two additional large chromosome(s) (i.e. 2n = 9 or 2n = 10, respectively). Aneuploid worms did not show visible behavioral or morphological abnormalities and were successful in reproduction. In this study, we generated microdissected DNA probes from chromosome 1 (further called MLI1), chromosome 2 (MLI2), and a pair of similar-

The nervous system (NS) of Microstomum lineare (Turbellaria, Macrostomida) was studied by electron and light microscopy, combined with fluorescence histochemistry (Falck-Hillarp method for biogenic monoamines). The NS is primitively organized, with a bilobed brain, two lateral nerve cords lacking commissures, and peripheral nerve cells scattered along the nerve cords. The stomatogastric NS, with a pharyngeal nerve ring, is joined to the central NS by a pair of connective ganglia. A green fluorescence in all parts of the NS indicates catecholaminergic neurons as the dominant neuron type. Ultras

Two mostly white terrestrial planarians, about 7 mm long, found in a garden in Yorkshire, UK, are described. They have a single pair of eyes and both specimens are fully mature, with a single pair of ovaries, several testes, a conical penis papilla and a genito-intestinal duct, characters of the genus Microplana, but differ in color and size from other species of the genus and are described as Microplana edwardsi sp. nov.

This study aimed to assess the interactive effects of CO2-driven acidification, temperature rise, and PAHs toxicity on meiobenthic communities. Laboratory microcosms were established in a full factorial experimental design, manipulating temperature (25 °C and 27 °C), pH (8.1 and 7.6), and PAH contamination (acenaphthene + benzo(a)pyrene spiked sediments and negative control). Temperature rise and CO2-driven acidification led to a decrease in the densities of Copepoda. The density of nematodes Pseudochromadora and Daptonema also decreased, while Sphaerotheristus and Sabatieria densities increas

Sperm competition is a potent mechanism of postcopulatory sexual selection that has been found to shape reproductive morphologies and behaviours in promiscuous animals. Especially sperm size has been argued to evolve in response to sperm competition through its effect on sperm longevity, sperm motility, the ability to displace competing sperm, and ultimately fertilization success. Additionally, sperm size has been observed to co-evolve with female reproductive morphology. Theoretical work predicts that sperm competition may select for longer sperm but may also favour shorter sperm if sperm siz

Chromosome stoichiometry, a form of genetic plasticity, specifically refers to variation in the standard diploid genomic composition of an individual or species. In the present work, freshwater planarians (Girardia schubarti) were analyzed to recognize variations in chromosomal stoichiometry especially of complete ploidal change between specimens, within specimens and between cells within specimens and any relations they might have with selected components of phenotypic plasticity. Homoploid polyploids for the group reached rational scalar multiples (e.g. tetraploids) or irrational scalar mult

A new Neotropical temnocephalan species is described from Aegla jarai Bond-Buckup & Buckup, 1994 from Santa Catarina, Brazil and recorded on Samastacus spinifrons (Philippi, 1882) from five locations (Región de Biobío, Región de la Araucanía, and Región de Los Lagos) in Chile. Temnocephala catarinensis sp. nov. differs from 10 other species of Temnocephala Blanchard, 1849 epibionts on Aeglidae Dana, 1852 and/or Parastacidae Huxley, 1879 by having the following combination of characters: 1. a long and slightly curved cirrus; 2. an introvert with two distinct portions, a proximal one with groove

The study of the labelling of planaria with 99mTc shows that the incorporation of radioactivity in this platyhelminth increases with an increase in SnCl2 concentration from 0.13 to 1.3 microM, reaching a plateau in the range of 1.3-130 microM then decreasing with 1300 microM. At concentrations of 1.3 and 13 microM SnCl2, a stronger binding of 99mTc was obtained. The biological viability of the labelled planaria was not altered when the described methodology was used. The advantage of this new labelling technique is that it is possible to obtain a platyhelminth preparation labelled with a radio

BACKGROUND: Sexual conflicts over the post-mating fate of received ejaculate can favour traits in one sex that are costly to the other. Reciprocally mating hermaphrodites face unique challenges as they mate simultaneously in both the male and female role, potentially leading to receipt of unwanted ejaculate. Reciprocal mating can then give rise to postcopulatory female resistance traits that allow manipulation of received ejaculate. A putative example is the suck behaviour, observed in the flatworm genus Macrostomum. It involves the sperm recipient placing its pharynx over its own female genit

Turbellarian black spot disease is described in a bluespine unicornfish Naso unicornis (Perciformes, Acanthuridae) collected from the wild off Nouméa, New Caledonia, South Pacific. Each cyst contained a whitish worm, 2 to 4 mm in length, which was able to swim freely in seawater. Cyst walls consisted of fibrous tissue with a scattering of melanocytes. Worms had 2 eyespots at the anterior end, a pharynx at the posterior end and a largely undeveloped reproductive system. They were identified as Piscinquilinus sp. (= Ichthyophaga sp.), a genostomatid turbellarian. The disease spread within 2 wk f

The morphology of Kronborgia pugettensis sp. nov., an endoparasite from the haemocoele of the caridean shrimp Heptacarpus kincaidi is described from specimens collected in the San Juan Island region of the western coast of North America. Members of this species are unisexual as are other members of the genus, but only females were found. An ootype and a type of accessory reproductive gland not known from other Kronborgia spp. are described, but they are probably present in other members of the genus. The life-history is similar to that of other Kronborgia spp. After the female reaches maturity

The nervous system (NS) of Dugesia tigrina has been studied by immunocytochemical double-staining, using the authentic flatworm neuropeptide, neuropeptide F (NPF), and serotonin (5-HT) on cryosections. This technique provides a precise morphological (descriptive) account of the NS. The results show that the central nervous system is shaped like a horseshoe. The brain is composed of two lateral lobes connected by three commissures, one antero-dorsal in front of the cerebral eyes and two, more ventral, behind the eyes. The pair of main nerve cords extend from the lateral lobes of the brain to th

Adult hydrozoan cnidarians undergo extensive tissue turnover, generating neural cell types that include nematocytes (stinging cells) and gland cells from interstitial stem cells (i-cells) expressing stemness proteins such as Piwi and Nanos. The contribution of i-cells during embryogenesis, however, has been unclear. We address neural cell origins during development of the Clytia hemisphaerica planula larva. In situ hybridisation of nematogenesis genes revealed that Piwi/Nanos1-expressing cells generate a substantial pool of nematoblasts (undifferentiated nematocytes) within the gastrula presum

Previous studies on sex allocation in simultaneous hermaphrodites have typically focused either on evolutionary or one-time, ontogenetic optimization of sex allocation, ignoring variation within an individual's lifetime. Here, we study whether hermaphrodites also possess facultative sex allocation, that is, a phenotypic flexibility, allowing them to distribute resources to either sex in an opportunistic way during their adult lifetime. We used the simultaneously hermaphroditic free-living flatworm Macrostomum lignano and raised individuals in pairs and groups of eight worms (further called oct

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are essential infrastructure in our developing world. However, with the development and release of novel entities and without modern upgrades, they are ineffective at fully removing micropollutants before treated effluents are released back into aquatic environments. Thus, WWTPs may represent additional point source impacts to freshwater environments, further pressuring aquatic fauna and already vulnerable insect communities. Previous studies - mostly focusing on single WWTPs - have shown general trends of freshwater invertebrate communities becoming dominate

The Pax-6 gene encodes a transcription factor containing both a paired and a homeodomain and is highly conserved among Metazoa. In both vertebrates and invertebrates, Pax-6 is required for eye morphogenesis, development of parts of the central nervous system, and, in some phyla, for the development of olfactory sense organs. Ectopic expression of Pax-6 from insects, mammals, cephalopods, and ascidians induces ectopic eyes in Drosophila, suggesting that Pax-6 may be a universal master control gene for eye morphogenesis. Platyhelminthes are an ancient phylum, originating from the base of spirali

Although Notoplana acticola, a marine polyclad, cannot regenerate brain tissue, neuronal repair is rapid. Brains were transplanted into decerebrate flatworms to determine the anatomical patterns and functionality of neural connections established between a new brain and the peripheral nerve network of the recipient animal. Sixty-nine transplants were performed. Four brain transplant orientations were used: normal, reversed, inverted, and reversed inverted. The functionality of the transplanted brains was tested and measured using both behavioral and electrophysiological criteria. Within 23 day

Sexual selection theory for separate-sexed animals predicts that the sexes differ in the benefit they can obtain from multiple mating. Conventional sex roles assume that the relationship between the number of mates and the fitness of an individual is steeper in males compared with females. Under these conditions, males are expected to be more eager to mate, whereas females are expected to be choosier. Here we hypothesize that the sex allocation, i.e. the reproductive investment devoted to the male versus female function, can be an important predictor of the mating strategy in simultaneous herm

Sex allocation theory for simultaneous hermaphrodites assumes a direct trade-off between the allocation of resources to the male and female reproductive functions. Empirical support for this basic assumption is scarce, possibly because studies rarely control for variation in individual reproductive resource budgets. Such variation, which can have environmental or genetic sources, can generate a positive relationship between male and female investment and can thus obscure the trade-off. In this study on the hermaphroditic flatworm Macrostomum sp. we tried to control for budget effects by restri
