Optimized Method for Cultivation and Microbial Bioaugmentation of Typha latifolia (Cattail).

Typha latifolia, more commonly known as the broadleaf cattail or the common bulrush, has a globally reaching range and dominates wetland ecosystems in North America. While different species of cattail are often considered invasive in North America, T. latifolia is considered the native species to the region and is found throughout the entire continent as the dominant Typha species. Historically, Typha has served various functions, from food sources to building materials. More recently, T. latifolia has emerged as a prominent species to aid bioremediation efforts. With increasing interest in th

[Effect of Pyrolytic Temperature and Time on Characteristics of Typha angustifolia Derived Biochar and Preliminary Assessment of the Ecological Risk].

A batch of biochar was produced from pyrolysis of Typha angustifolia (TBCs) at 200-500℃ for 2 h and 6 h to investigate the effects of pyrolytic temperature and heating retention time on the physico-chemical properties. Moreover, Escherichia coli (E. coli) HB101 and the seeds of Helianthus annuus were used to preliminarily test the ecological risk of the TBCs. Results showed that the heating retention time (i.e., 2 and 6 h) had no significant effect on the properties of TBCs, while pyrolytic temperature significantly affected TBCs' characteristics. As the pyrolysis temperature increased from 20

Structural characterization of acetylated mannan from Typha angustifolia pollen and the impact of acetylation on its growth-promoting effect toward Lactobacillus johnsonii.

Acetylated mannan (PTPS-W-2) was isolated from Typha angustifolia Pollen through hot-water extraction followed by ion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography. Structural characterization indicated that PTPS-W-2 is a homogeneous polysaccharide with an average molecular weight of approximately 42 kDa, composed exclusively of mannose residues. The backbone consists predominantly of →4-β-Manp-(1→4)-β-Manp-(1→ linkages, with partial O-acetyl substitution at the C-2 and C-3 positions. Notably, this represents the first report of isolating a plant-derived acetylated mannan with a high degree of pu

Meta-Analysis of the Copper, Zinc, and Cadmium Absorption Capacities of Aquatic Plants in Heavy Metal-Polluted Water.

The use of aquatic plants for phytoremediation is an important method for restoring polluted ecosystems. We sought to analyze the capacity of different aquatic plant species to absorb heavy metals and to summarize available relevant scientific data on this topic. We present a meta-analysis of Cu, Zn, and Cd absorption capacities of aquatic plants to provide a scientific basis for the selection of aquatic plants suitable for remediation of heavy-metal pollution. Plants from the Gramineae, Pontederiaceae, Ceratophyllaceae, Typhaceae and Haloragaceae showed relatively strong abilities to absorb t

Production and modification of hydrochar from anaerobically digested cattail for adsorbing ammonium and phosphorous in wastewater.

Water contamination by nitrogen and phosphorus ions has a direct consequence of eutrophication to the ecosystem. The objective of this study is to investigate the production of hydrochars by acetic acid or sodium hydroxide assisted hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), various activation methods, and the potential of hydrochar as an adsorbent to remove NH4+-N and PO43--P from wastewater. The results showed that acetic acid or sodium hydroxide assisted HTC and activation with magnesium chloride or air could improve the surface properties of hydrochar. Acetic acid modification generated extensive ox

Performance of Iris pseudacorus and Typha domingensis for furosemide removal in a hydroponic system.

The potential of Iris pseudacorus and Typha domingensis to remove the pharmaceutical active compound (PhAC) Furosemide from a nutrient solution was assessed. Both plants were exposed to 2 mg L-1 of furosemide during 21 days and the removal of furosemide was monitored. Vessels without furosemide were also implemented as control systems for plants development. Likewise, unplanted vessels with furosemide were employed to assess abiotic removal mechanisms. All vessels were covered with aluminum foil to avoid photodegradation of the compound. Both plants showed potential to remove Furosemide, attai

Efficient removal of Cr(VI) and As(V) from an aquatic system using iron oxide supported typha biochar.

The removal of Cr(VI) and As(V) from aqueous solutions has been a worldwide concern. In this study, Typha biochar (FBC) with magnetic iron oxide was prepared by impregnating Typha with FeCl3 and performing pyrolysis, and the possible mechanism of Cr(VI) and As(V) removal was investigated by combining characterization means and adsorption experiments. The results showed that the modified Typha biochar is rich in pores and has the potential to eliminate Cr and As through processes such as exchange and reduction. The single molecule uptake capacities of FBC for Cr(VI) and As(V) were 32.82 and 21.

Effects of waterlogging on pollutant availability in iron mining tailings and the tolerance response of Typha domingensis Pers.

Soil flooding can increase nutrient and pollutant availability to plants; however, the effects in iron mining tailings are still unclear. This work hypothesizes that waterlogging increases the availability of elements present in iron mining tailings, but tolerant aquatic plants can survive under these conditions, showing potential for phytoremediation. This work investigated how flooding affects the availability of essential elements and metal pollutants in iron mining tailings and how this affects the growth, root anatomy, and pollutant content in the aquatic plant Typha domingensis (cattail)

Investigating Co, Cu, and Pb retention and remobilization after drying and rewetting treatments in greenhouse laboratory-scale constructed treatments with and without Typha angustifolia, and connected phytoremediation potential.

There is critical concern over heavy metals because they are biotoxins. The best management option is elimination or at least minimization of effluence into the environment, but in several regions, mining wastewater or acid mine drainage (AMD) effluence into natural wetlands has continued. The ability of wetlands to attenuate heavy metals in mining wastewater and AMD has led to natural wetlands being used as recipients of these effluents in many parts of the world. Ten greenhouse-based laboratory-scale constructed wetlands (GLCW) were set up at IHE-Delft Institute for Water Education to unders

Fungus Neosartorya (Aspergillus) fischeri improves the fitness, tolerance and absorption of heavy metals in Typha latifolia.

Heavy metal contamination is a global issue caused by anthropogenic activities leading to severe negative effects on the environment and human health. To address this problem, bioremediation strategies utilizing plants such as Typha latifolia and their symbiotic fungi have been adopted to remediate contaminated areas and mitigate the harmful effects of these pollutants. In this study, the endophytic fungus Neosartorya fischeri was isolated from the roots of T. latifolia plants growing in heavy metal-contaminated sites. N. fischeri colonized the epidermis and root cortex and showed high toleran

Legacies of Past Climate Change Shape Future Resilience of Typha latifolia at Its Rear Edge in East Asia.

Global warming poses a significant threat to rear-edge populations owing to their geographically marginal distributions. Understanding the historical dynamics and future trajectories of these populations is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies, yet they remain poorly understood. Here, we employed landscape genomic approaches on 153 samples from 24 Typha latifolia populations spanning its fragmented rear edge in East Asia, to explore demographic history, local adaptation, climate vulnerability and resilience potential. Our analyses reveal that repeated Pleistocene climatic c

Differential patterns of element accumulation by Typha latifolia L. based on the chemical variability of wet moats.

The metal accumulation abilities of Typha latifolia L. are of particular importance in small, semi-enclosed aquatic ecosystems in human-modified landscapes, which are highly susceptible to anthropogenic pollution. In this study, major and trace elements, with a particular focus on rare earth elements (REEs), were studied in samples collected from three wet castle moats in the Wielkopolska Region, Poland. The analysis of selected elements in water, bottom sediments (BS) and different parts of T. latifolia L. aimed to reveal the plant's potential to accumulate and redistribute elements, dependin

Mercury species accumulation and distribution in Typha domingensis under real field conditions (Almadén, Spain).

Monomethylmercury (MeHg) is one of the most toxic and the most commonly occurring organomercury compound and the wetlands are one of the main areas of generation of this Hg form. Concretely, it is in the macrophyte root system where better conditions are given for its generation. However, the knowledge of absorption and subsequent distribution of mercury (Hg) and monomethylmercury in aquatic plants is still limited. Mercury mining district such as Almadén (Ciudad Real, Spain) is a natural laboratory where different rivers flow and the species Typha domingensis Pers. is a common macrophyte whic

Aqueous pesticide mitigation efficiency of Typha latifolia (L.), Leersia oryzoides (L.) Sw., and Sparganium americanum Nutt.

Agricultural pesticide use is necessary to help meet the increased demand for a safe and secure food supply for the United States, as well as the global community. Even with proper application and careful management, the possibility of pesticide leaching and detachment in runoff still exists following certain storm events. Several different management practices have been designed to reduce the impacts of pesticides on aquatic receiving systems. Many such practices focus on the use of vegetation to slow runoff and allow for sorption of the various contaminants. Three common drainage ditch macro

Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Potential of Temperate Fen Paludicultures.

Peatlands lose their valuable carbon (C) sink function under intensive land use and turn into greenhouse gas (GHG) emission hotspots. Despite scarce empirical evidence, paludiculture is expected to have significant GHG mitigation potential for organic soils. This study provides the first comprehensive dataset on full GHG balances for newly established fen paludicultures over a water table (WT) gradient spanning an annual mean WT of -0.29 to +0.04 m, stratified into moderately rewetted conditions (-0.30 < WT < -0.10 m) and rewetted conditions (WT ≥ -0.10 m).
