Parathyroids and ultimobranchial bodies in monotremes.

Only scant information is available in the scientific literature on the parathyroids and ultimobranchial bodies in the primitive mammals, the echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) and platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus). The major aim of this paper is to describe the morphology of the monotreme parathyroid gland and to compare it with parathyroids in mammals and reptiles. The gross anatomy and light microscopic structure of the ultimobranchial body, thymus, and thyroid are also given. Animals were dissected and routine light and electron microscopic techniques used to examine the microscopic morpho

Piriform sinus fistula and the ultimobranchial body.

Piriform sinus fistulae are an underlying abnormality common in patients with acute suppurative thyroiditis. The fistulae arise from the hypopharynx, and end in or adjacent to the thyroid lobe. These congenital fistulae seem to be remnants of one of the pharyngeal pouches in embryonic development, but their exact origin is still controversial. Resected specimens of the thyroid glands and fistulae from 15 patients were examined immunohistochemically with rabbit antisera to human calcitonin and thyroglobulin. The fistulae were lined by squamous, columnar or ciliated epithelium, and sometimes for

Origin of the ultimobranchial body cyst: T/ebp/Nkx2.1 expression is required for development and fusion of the ultimobranchial body to the thyroid.

The ultimobranchial body (UBB) is an outpocketing of the fourth pharyngeal pouch that fuses with the thyroid diverticulum, giving rise to calcitonin-producing C-cells. In this study, we demonstrate that the UBB is composed of two types of cells: one expressing T/ebp/Nkx2.1 and the other expressing p63. The former cell type, accounting for a majority of the UBB, requires T/ebp/Nkx2.1 for their survival. In contrast, the p63-positive cells, even in the absence of T/ebp/Nkx2.1 expression, can proliferate and give rise to a vesicular structure that is lined by a monolayer of p63-negative cells, su

Structure of rat ultimobranchial bodies after birth.

The evolution of ultimobranchial bodies in Holtzman rats during the first 64 weeks after birth was studied by reconstructing three-dimensional models from serial sections stained by the periodic acid-Schiff technique.Radio-autography with 125I was made to see if ultimobranchial cells and/or follicular cells lining the lumen of mixed follicles were able to iodinate proteins. The term ultimobranchial body designates herein an embryonic vesicular structure (derived from the third pharyngeal pouch) whose wall is made of stratified squamous epithelium. During the first week after birth, the vesicul

A morphological study of the ultimobranchial body in the grass parakeet.

As parafollicular cells can be stained by Grimelius' silver impregnation and by lead-hematoxylin, the ultimobranchial body cells, homologous to them, seem to also react positively to these methods. In the present study of the ultimobranchial body of the grass parakeet, mirror-image sections were stained by both methods and compared. While about 50% of the cells reacted positively to both Grimelius' silver impregnation and lead-hematoxylin staining, only about 20% were positive to the former and about 30% were positive to the latter only. This result indicating heterogeneity among the cells of

[Seasonal variations of the ultimobranchial body of the turtle (Pseudemys scripta)].

Ultrastructural seasonal cyclic aspects of ultimobranchial body (C.U.B.) in fresh turtles (Pseudemys scripta) are studied. The C.U.B. consists of follicles and cords. The cord cells are characterized by many secretory granules measuring approximately 180 nm with variable feature and electron density. These granules are localized in the cytoplasm close to basal laminae. The follicular cells, on the contrary, present few and large secretory granules, glycogen particles, bundle of filaments and a scarcely developing Golgi apparatus and granular endoplasmic reticulum. The apical and follicular cyt

Thyroid Adenoma of Probable Ultimobranchial Body Origin: A Case Report.

Solid cell nests are generally believed to represent remnants of the ultimobranchial body, which can be found in the normal thyroid gland, occasionally associated with other branchial pouch remnants such as salivary gland, cartilage, and adipose tissue. We describe the case of a 44-year-old man incidentally found to have a large tumor in the left lobe of the thyroid. The tumor was a circumscribed growth consisting of distinctly lobulated proliferation of solid to cystic epidermoid cell nests and thyroid follicles in a fibromatous stroma, which merged into abundant adipose tissue and focally my

Origin of the ultimobranchial body and its colonizing cells in human embryos.

The early development of the ultimobranchial body and its colonizing cells was studied in human embryos (O'Rahilly's stages 14 and 15). In our studies we have obtained evidence that permits us to propose a new hypothesis on the origin of both the ultimobranchial body and its colonizing cells. Based on our interpretation of the morphogenetic features in human development, we think that the ultimobranchial body derives from the fifth endodermal pharyngeal pouch, which is colonized, from O'Rahilly's stage 14 on, by cellular material of ectodermal placodial nature that originates in the most cauda

Morphogenesis of the ultimobranchial body and its colonizing cells in the chick embryo.

The development of the ultimobranchial body and its colonizing cells was studied in chick embryos in Hamburger-Hamilton's stages 21 to 46. The most significant observations included the following: 1.-The ultimobranchial body is a separate morphological entity with particular characteristics distinguishing it from the fourth pharyngeal pouch in all developmental stages. 2.-The fifth pharyngeobranchial ducts disappear in Hamburger-Hamilton's stage 27. 3.-From Hamburger-Hamilton's stage 27 on, the left ultimobranchial body is in contact with the caudal end of the left parathyroid IV primordium. 4

Position of ultimobranchial body cysts in the human fetal thyroid gland.

In a series of 21 human fetal thyroid glands examined histologically in serial sections, seven ultimobranchial body cysts were found. The position of these cysts correlated well with the distribution of calcitonin-containing cells found by previous investigators in the adult thyroid gland. Ultimobranchial body cysts found external to the thyroid lobes may offer a developmental explanation for the paucity of calcitonin found in some adult thyroid glands. The close developmental relationship between the parathyroid gland and the ultimobranchial body could explain the presence of calcitonin found

Ultimobranchial body cyst in an adult horse: clinical, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical features.

A 9-y-old Mangalarga Marchador gelding was referred to a veterinary hospital because of a swelling on the upper right side of the neck. Ultrasound examination revealed a multilocular structure adjacent to the thyroid gland with low echogenic content suggestive of fluid. The mass was removed surgically. Histologically, the cystic cavities in the surgical sample were filled with abundant eosinophilic secreta and lined by cuboidal, segmentally ciliated, columnar epithelium with interspersed goblet cells. Segmental crowding of the multilayered lining of the cyst was noted. Immunohistochemistry sug

Ultimobranchial body and parathyroid gland of the parrot Psittacula psittacula in response to experimental hypercalcemia.

Psittacula psittacula when subjected to long term hypercalcemia by intramuscular injections of vitamin D2 (20,000 I.U.) on alternate days and by increasing dietary calcium, exhibit a rise in the serum calcium level after 10, 20 and 30 days of treatment as compared to their corresponding controls. The ultimobranchial cells show progressive hypertrophy up to 20th day of the treatment. From 20th day till the end of the experiment (30 days) these cells show feeble staining response. The parathyroid glands suffer from degenerative changes due to its inactivity under chronic hypercalcemia.

Morphological, histological and ultra-structural studies on the ultimobranchial body of goat (Capra hircus).

Ultimobranchial body (UBB) remnant was considered as an enigma till the last few years, then it was recognized as a necessary organ where it is the origin of the parafollicular cells. The samples were fixed and processed for the histological and electron microscopic examination. Macroscopically, the UBB remnant appeared as a white mass at the end of the cranial one-third of the thyroid lobe. It was composed of solid cell nest, cluster of cells and small thyroid follicles. Transmission electron microscope showed some round cells containing euchromatic nuclei, numerous parafollicular cells with

Ultimobranchial body and parathyroid gland of the frog, Rana tigrina in response to calcitonin administration.

The effects of salmon calcitonin (0.25 MRC mU/g body wt) on the serum calcium and phosphate levels as well as on the activity of ultimobranchial body and parathyroid glands was investigated in the frog, Rana tigrina for 15 days. The hormone evokes hypocalcemia (on day 1 and day 3) which is followed by a significant hypercalcemia on day 10. Thereafter, the level of calcium decreases again on day 15. Calcitonin induces hypophosphatemia (on day 3 and day 5). Thereafter, hyperphosphatemia is recorded on day 10. By day 15 normal serum phosphate value is achieved. After treatment with calcitonin, th

The role of ultimobranchial bodies in the modulation of the response of chick embryos to 1,25-dihydroxy-cholecalciferol.

Ultimobranchial bodies (UBBs) were dissected from 17-day-old chick embryos and grafted onto the chorioallantoic membrane of 8-day-old embryos. The embryos with UBB grafts as well as sham-grafted controls were injected on the 10th day of incubation with 100 ng 1,25(OH)2D3 dissolved in ethyl alcohol or with an equal volume of ethyl alcohol alone; embryos were sacrificed on the 13th day. Grafted UBBs showed ultrastructural characteristics typical of actively secreting glands. A histological study of the tibiae from all embryos showed that while the grafted embryos responded to the injection of 1,

Thyroid Tubercle of Zuckerkandl May Not Arise from the Ultimobranchial Body: Results from Histological Analysis.

Thyroid tubercle of Zuckerkandl (TZ) is a nodule arising from the posterolateral thyroid, considered to be a remnant of the ultimobranchial body (UB). Considering that C cells and solid cell nests also arise from the UB, we hypothesized that these would be present in the TZ. We examined the presence of C cells and solid cell nests in the TZ using the histological analyses of 21 patients with grade 2 or 3 TZs following Pelizzo's grading system. Out of 21 TZs, 19 (90.5%) were located in the right lobe of the thyroid. Microscopically, solid cell nests were found within the TZ in 1 case (4.8%), an

Circannual rhythms in the activity of the parathyroid gland and ultimobranchial body cells of the frog Rana temporaria (Anura, Amphibia).

The annual activity of the parathyroid gland cells and those of the ultimobranchial body cells of the frog Rana temporaria is quantitatively investigated by a morphometric study. A cosinor analysis shows a periodic succession of different parameters. The secretory activity of the parathyroid cells starts after a maximal value of external temperature in July. This activity is followed by an increase of plasma calcium which seems to induce the activity of the ultimobranchial cells.
