Unaccompanied foreign minors and mental health: Implementation and evaluation of the RHS-15 screening procedure for unaccompanied foreign minors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The recent notable increase in refugees' flows, with refugee children and adolescents relocating worldwide, posed severe challenges to the different national healthcare systems. Social groups such as refugees fleeing from their countries because of persecution, wars and violence are considered at high risk of developing mental health-related problems. Despite international and national policies legally regulating the reception process and protecting health-related rights, including the mental well-being of refugee migrants, there is a theoretical and applied need for

[The importance of mother tongue for unaccompanied minors].

Unaccompanied minors are teenagers forced to grow up too fast. In this race to become an adult, some are faced with the challenge of learning a new language and building skills around it, to the detriment of their mother tongue. When it comes to learning a new language, even in adolescence, the mother tongue remains the foundation on which new acquisitions are built. In the context of encounters with unaccompanied minors, valuing early language skills, particularly when learning a second language is at risk, is a safety valve in the face of multiple paradoxical injunctions.

Psychopathology in African unaccompanied refugee minors in Austria.

We assessed the prevalence of a range of psychopathology among African unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) in Austria. Additionally, the predictive value of war exposure on PTSD symptoms was examined. Forty-one URMs were assessed with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for children and adolescents, the Youth Self-Report, the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index and Facts About You. As expected, 56% of youth had at least one diagnosis by structured clinical interview. The most common diagnoses were adjustment disorder, PTSD and dysthymia. War affliction marginally predicted (p = 0.065) PTSD

Age estimation of unaccompanied minors. Part I. General considerations.

In recent years many countries have experienced a sharp increase in the demand for forensic age estimates of unaccompanied minors. In many countries the age thresholds of relevance to criminal prosecution lie between 16 and 22 years. In line with recommendations issued by the Study Group on Forensic Age Diagnostics, for determining the age of live subjects a forensic age estimate should combine the results of a physical examination, an X-ray of the hand and a dental examination which records dentition status and evaluates an orthopantomogram. To assess the age of persons who are assumed to be

[Metacognitive Therapy and Pharmacotherapy - Adapted to Unaccompanied Refugee Minors].

Metacognitive Therapy and Pharmacotherapy - Adapted to Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) present a relatively new challenge for adolescent psychotherapy and psychiatry. The evidence of possible treatment approaches is scarce. This paper presents a pragmatic adaptation of Wells' Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) for this population for the first time. Unlike the established trauma-focused treatment approaches MCT does not aim at prolonged exposure to the trauma narrative. Instead, patients shall learn to leave the distressing thoughts alone and to reduce the perseveratin

Assessing chronological age of unaccompanied minors in southern Italy.

The increasing volume of, and subsequent complexities resulting from, migratory flows in the broader context of globalization has led to a range of problems, not only the protection of human rights and disease control but also the identification of those with the right to apply for refugee status and the age assessment of unaccompanied minors. Italy is a magnet for immigration from other countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea because the Italian coasts are within easy reach. In Italy, as in other western countries, unaccompanied asylum seekers deemed to be younger than 18 years face a very

Nutritional status of displaced children including unaccompanied minors on Lesvos, Greece.

INTRODUCTION: The number of displaced people worldwide has reached an unprecedented 120 million, of whom 40% are children. There is limited knowledge about the health of children in refugee camps, particularly regarding their nutritional status. This study examines the nutritional status of 304 displaced children (0-18 years) in Closed Controlled Access Centre (CCAC) Mavrovouni, Lesvos, Greece. METHODS: An observational study was conducted between February and August 2023 at CCAC Mavrovouni. Data collection included demographics, dietary details, health and nutritional status. Endocannabinoid concentrations in hair and mental health of unaccompanied refugee minors.

Altered activity of the endocannabinoid (EC) system has been linked to dysregulated stress-reactivity and the development of trauma-related psychopathology. The EC system, with its main components anandamide (AEA), 2-arachidonoyl-glycerol (2-AG) and other N-acyl-ethanolamides, is considered to be a buffer system that protects against the negative effects of traumatic experiences on mental health. Recently, the use of hair analyses, a method to gain information on long-term cumulative system activity, has been introduced to the study of ECs. Here, we seek to extend current knowledge on the pote

Hair cortisol, lifetime traumatic experiences and psychopathology in unaccompanied refugee minors.

Attenuated cortisol secretion has been linked to traumatic experiences and the developmental psychopathology. Unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) form a highly vulnerable group in this context, usually exposed to multiple and severe traumatic experiences and characterized by a high, comorbid symptom-load. Here, we provide a first investigation in URM seeking to elucidate associations between long-term cortisol output, assessed through hair cortisol concentrations (HCC), lifetime traumatic events and psychological symptoms. Ninety-one male URM from Syria and Afghanistan (mean age = 17.4 years),

Personality and psychopathology in African unaccompanied refugee minors: repression, resilience and vulnerability.

Examining personality and psychopathological symptoms among unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs), we measured intra-individual dimensions (repression and correlates thereof) usually associated with resilience. Forty-one URMs completed the Weinberger Adjustment Inventory (WAI), assessing personality, and the Youth Self-Report (YSR), describing current symptoms. URMs endorsed high levels of Repressive Defensiveness, Denial of Distress, and Restraint; unexpectedly, URMs reported high Distress and reduced Happiness (WAI, p's < 0.05). Although YSR symptoms were below clinical cut points, there were

Identity scaffolding as a moral need in the caretaking of unaccompanied refugee minors.

BACKGROUND: Unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) represent one of the most vulnerable groups within the global refugee population, having fled armed conflict without familial support. Although policies in high-income countries secure URMs' basic rights-housing, education, healthcare and legal protection-these standardised frameworks frequently neglect the sociocultural and relational dimensions of identity integral to their well-being. OBJECTIVE: To articulate the moral imperative of identity scaffolding in URM care, demonstrating how current approaches enforce assimilation, exacerbate identit

[Global health of unaccompanied refugee minors in Gironde (France) between 2011 and 2013].

UNLABELLED: The lack of clinical practice recommendations for the care of the Unaccompanied Refugee Minors (URM) causes significant disparities depending on which department they arrive. By studying their global health we're willing to promote a standard of care for them. METHODS: Data descriptive study from a systematic medical procedure proposed to URM who came in Gironde between January, 2011 and December, 2013. RESULTS: 235 URM were included, from Africa (71%), Asia (21%) and from Eastern Europe (8%). Among them, 143 medical files were complete. The most frenquently diagnosed diseases, a

Senseless Violence Against Central American Unaccompanied Minors: Historical Background and Call for Help.

The southwestern U.S. border has recently seen a significant increase in the number of unaccompanied children from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador illegally crossing the Mexican border into the United States. Many of these children leave home to flee violence, starvation, impoverished living conditions, or other life-threatening situations. The treatment of acute stress, anxiety, and depression associated with traumatic events is crucial in helping these children address these negative psychological events they have experienced so that they can move forward with their lives. Pros and cons for the medical age assessments in unaccompanied minors: a mini-review.

Unaccompanied minors refer to immigrants who are under the age of 18 and are not under the care of a parent or legal guardian. Age assessment is used in Europe mainly to establish whether or not an individual is under 18 years of age and therefore eligible for protection under the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN - CRC). EU Member States use a combination of techniques to determine the age of a minor and to certify minor status, including interviews and documentation, physical examinations (anthropometric assessment; sexual maturity assessment; dental observation); psy

Unaccompanied foreign minors: the Novara experience as a reference center of Eastern Piedmont (Italy).

BACKGROUND: 20% of migrants who reach Italy are minors, often Unaccompanied Foreign Minors (UFM). If they are minors, they have the right to remain on EU territory, but in case of doubt, the authorities ask to ascertain their age. This is currently done through different procedures. METHODS: The aim of this study was to understand the validity of the protocol adopted by the 'Maggiore della Carità hospital in Novara (Italy), reference center for Eastern Piedmont, for ascertaining the age of self-proclaimed minors by comparing the results with those of other European realities. Alone, but protected? Effects of social support on mental health of unaccompanied refugee minors.

Unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) are the most vulnerable group of refugees suffering from higher levels of mental health problems. Yet, there is also a group of URM with little or no symptoms or disorders. A major predictor for positive mental health outcomes is the social support network in the post-flight period which has rarely been investigated for the group of URM. The present study analyzes differences between perceived social support from family, peers, and adult mentors in URM, with subgroup analyses of peer and mentor support in URM with and without family contact. Furthermore, we i

Age assessment of unaccompanied foreign minors: an analyses of knowledge and practices among Italian pediatricians.

BACKGROUND: Increases in migration patterns in the recent years have led to a continuously growing number of unaccompanied foreign minors (UFMs) entering Italy. As part of processing and integration, age assessment is performed by pediatricians upon request of regulatory bodies. Updated guidelines for age estimation procedures were published in 2020 in order to prioritize the well-being of the minors and the accuracy of the assessment. Nonetheless, literature suggests that the recently established multidisciplinary approach has not yet been widely adopted by physicians. METHODS: A cross-secti

An Analysis of Personal Learning Environments and Age-Related Psychosocial Factors of Unaccompanied Foreign Minors.

Spain is one of the countries with the greatest influx of immigrants and, specifically, of unaccompanied foreign minors (UFMs). The educational and social inclusion of unaccompanied foreign minors poses both a challenge and a threat to current policy. Nonetheless, studies linking educational aspects to the phenomenon of the integration of these children are scarce and do not specify the most influential educational tools and strategies. In this sense, a descriptive, quantitative and cross-sectional research study is presented. The aim of this study is to examine whether variables such as age a
