The underachieving child.

Visual factors in specific learning difficulties (SpLD) are reviewed. People with SpLD fail to achieve at a level that is commensurate with their intelligence. The commonest SpLD is dyslexia, which usually results from phonological processing/decoding deficits. Additionally, there are several optometric correlates of SpLD which may, in some cases, contribute to the learning difficulty. These correlates include binocular instability and a low amplitude of accommodation. Some people with reading difficulties and perceptual distortions/eyestrain can be helped by individually prescribed coloured f

Undiagnosed silent coeliac disease: a risk for underachievement?

OBJECTIVE: Silent coeliac disease is reported in 1% of Caucasian populations, but there is a lack of knowledge of its natural course and the risk of complications. The need for population screening is debated. We sought for complications of untreated coeliac disease in a well-defined cohort of Finnish adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Subjects (n=2427, ages 24-39 years) attending the 21-year follow-up visit of the study "Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns" completed an extensive questionnaire on their health, diet, social situation and family life, and were given a medical examination. Measuremen

Multiple intelligences and underachievement: lessons from individuals with learning disabilities.

The field of learning disabilities, like education in the main, is undergoing calls for reform and restructuring, an upheaval brought on in great part by the forces of opposing paradigms--reductionism and constructivism. In reexamining our past, we must begin to address the failures of traditional deficit models and their abysmally low "cure" rate. Several new theories have arisen that challenge traditional practices in both general and special education classrooms. Particularly influential has been the work of Howard Gardner, whose theory of multiple intelligences calls for a restructuring of

HIV-1 bNAb Vaccinal Effect-An Underachieving Goal?

Reports of HIV-1-specific broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (bNAbs) mediating a potential 'vaccinal effect' implicate passively transferred bNAbs in promoting endogenous anti-HIV-1 immune responses. To date, three clinical trials have reported either increased anti- HIV-1 neutralizing antibodies or T cell responses following bNAb administration to people living with HIV. Despite strong enthusiasm for this hypothesis, motivated in large part by its potential application to HIV-1 therapeutic strategies, the mechanism(s) underlying a vaccinal effect remain unclear. Moreover, vaccinal eff

Validity of alternative approaches for the identification of learning disabilities: operationalizing unexpected underachievement.

This article reviews the validity of models based on (a) aptitude-achievement discrepancies, (b) low achievement, (c) intraindividual differences, and (d) response to instruction for the classification and identification of learning disabilities (LD). Models based on aptitude-achievement discrepancies and intraindividual differences showed little evidence of discriminant validity. Low achievement models had stronger discriminant validity but do not adequately assess the most significant component of the LD construct, unexpected underachievement. All three of these status models have limited re

Bangla validation of the smartphone addiction scale and the academic underachievement scale: The associative role of classroom mindful attention in the relationship between smartphone addiction and underachievement among adolescents and young adults.

This study aimed to validate the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) and the Perceived Academic Underachievement Scale (PAUS) for Bangladeshi adolescents and young adults. In addition, the study investigated whether classroom mindful attention has an indirect association with the relationship between smartphone addiction and academic underachievement in the target population. A cross-sectional survey using convenience sampling was conducted with 712 participants recruited from different educational institutions in Bangladesh. Gender differences in attitudes toward academic effort and boys' underachievement: A large-scale international study.

In most developed countries, boys underperform academically compared with girls. One possible explanation lies in boys' more negative attitudes toward school and learning. Using data from 750,000 15-year olds across 61 countries, we investigate gender gaps in attitudes toward academic effort, including students' beliefs about the importance of trying hard in school. Boys consistently report less positive attitudes than girls, regardless of socioeconomic status, family structure, or grade repetition. These gender gaps are observed in nearly all countries and are larger in more developed societi

Externalizing behavior problems and academic underachievement in childhood and adolescence: causal relationships and underlying mechanisms.

Conceptual and measurement issues surrounding externalizing behavior problems and academic underachievement, the strength and specificity of the covariation between these domains, and the viability of explanatory models that link these areas are reviewed. In childhood, inattention and hyperactivity are stronger correlates of academic problems than is aggression; by adolescence, however, antisocial behavior and delinquency are clearly associated with underachievement. Whereas investigations with designs that allow accurate causal inference are scarce, unidirectional paths from 1 domain to the o

Semantic language as a mechanism explaining the association between ADHD symptoms and reading and mathematics underachievement.

ADHD is associated with academic underachievement, but it remains unclear what mechanism accounts for this association. Semantic language is an underexplored mechanism that provides a developmental explanation for this association. The present study will examine whether semantic language deficits explain the association between ADHD and reading and mathematics underachievement, taking into account alternative explanations for associations, including verbal working memory (WM) impairments, as well as specificity of effects to inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive ADHD symptom domains. How does emotional wellbeing relate to underachievement in a general population sample of young adolescents: a neurocognitive perspective.

Underachievement in school during early adolescence predicts future economic and personal difficulties. Particular neurocognitive skills on the domain of executive functions start to mature during adolescence. This fact and the physical and psychological changes typical for the transition from childhood to adulthood make adolescents vulnerable to emotional problems. The current study investigated the relationship between mild emotional problems which are highly prevalent among adolescents and underachievement in school, and the role of neurocognitive functioning in this relation. This study wa

The repeated exam failure might affect further underachievement of MD students, especially first-year females - the single-centre observation based on selected yearlong courses.

BACKGROUND: In order to address the uneven academic performance of MD students, the study focused on the potential association between the results of midterm assessment and students’ further underachievement. The authors addressed two research questions: (1) If a student fails the first attempt of the midterm test, can this result be considered as a risk factor of failing the first attempt of final exam as well?; (2) Is there a long-term effect of exam failure experience on academic performance on the third year of the curriculum? METHODS: The retrospective cohort study involved anonymized MD

Pathways from developmental vulnerabilities in early childhood to schizotypy in middle childhood.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood disturbances in social, emotional, language, motor and cognitive functioning, and schizotypy have each been implicated as precursors of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. We investigated whether relationships between early childhood developmental vulnerabilities and childhood schizotypy are mediated by educational underachievement in middle childhood. METHODS: Participants were members of a large Australian (n = 19,216) population cohort followed longitudinally. Path analyses were used to model relationships between developmental vulnerabilities at age ~5 years, education

Specific Learning Disabilities: The Family Physician's Role.

Academic underachievement, such as failing a class and the threat of being held back because of academic issues, is common. Family physicians can provide support and guidance for families as they approach their child's unique academic challenges. Specific learning disabilities are a group of learning disorders (e.g., dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyslexia) that impede a child's ability to learn. Understanding standard educational terms; looking for medical, family, and social risk factors associated with academic underachievement; and investigating the medical differential for academic underachieve
