Underage drinking: does the minimum age drinking law offer enough protection?

Underage drinking is a significant problem in the US. It is responsible for several thousand mortalities and fatalities each year, both among minors and other members of society. Additionally, underage alcohol consumption produces a severe economic burden in the US. Introduction to alcohol in youth poses serious long-term risks for adolescents, including occupational, educational, and psychosocial impairments, and increases the risk for developing alcohol abuse disorders in adulthood. In order to address and mitigate this problem, the US has set a minimum age drinking law of 21 in all 50 state

Early developmental processes and the continuity of risk for underage drinking and problem drinking.

Developmental pathways to underage drinking emerge before the second decade of life. Many scientists, however, as well as the general public, continue to focus on proximal influences surrounding the initiation of drinking in adolescence, such as social, behavioral, and genetic variables related to availability and ease of acquisition of the drug, social reinforcement for its use, and individual differences in drug responses. In the past 20 years, a considerable body of evidence has accumulated on the early (often much earlier than the time of the first drink) predictors and pathways of youthfu

Underage drinking: prevalence and correlates of risky drinking measures among youth aged 12-20.

BACKGROUND: Underage drinking and its effects have been researched extensively. However, no study to date has examined how the levels of drinking that have been defined as risky for adults might relate to youth who have a heightened physiological vulnerability to alcohol. OBJECTIVES: To examine a range of drinking measures that go beyond common measures of youth alcohol use to gain a more detailed understanding of the nature of underage drinking and its associated correlates and outcomes. METHODS: Analyzing data from a 2013 nationally representative US survey, we examined a variety of measur

The association between family environment and underage drinking in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Mid-adolescence is a critical developmental stage for the onset of drunkenness and binge drinking. In the West of Ireland, 34.1% of adolescents reported binge drinking in the 2020 Planet Youth analysis [16], compared with 35.6% in the present 2022 study. AIMS: To estimate associations between family environment factors and underage drinking among 15-16-year-olds and to examine reported sources of alcohol access. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional secondary data analysis of Planet Youth 2022 Ireland survey (n = 4615) among 15-16 year olds. The study outcomes were binge drinki

Underage drinking in Brazil: findings from a community household survey.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have estimated the 30-day prevalence of alcohol use to be approximately 21% among youth in Brazil, despite the legal drinking age of 18 years. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of underage drinking and its associated factors among adolescents in Brazil. METHODS: The 3rd National Survey on Drug Use by the Brazilian Population (III Levantamento Nacional sobre o Uso de Drogas pela População Brasileira) is a nationwide, multi-stage, probability-sample household survey. Herein, youth between the ages of 12-17 years were included. Lifetime and 12-month

Effects of state coalitions to reduce underage drinking: a national evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Drinking by youth remains prevalent. The Reducing Underage Drinking through coalitions (RUD) project funded ten states for 8 years to form coalitions designed to change the policy and normative environment regarding youth access to alcohol. An independent national outcome evaluation of this $21-million effort was conducted. METHODS: Using a longitudinal quasi-experimental design, the ten intervention states were compared with the other 40 states, with repeated annual measures of outcomes from 1995 to 2004. Measures included print news media coverage, legislative bills enacted, y

Monitoring and Reporting of Alcohol Consumption in India: A Situational Analysis for Combating Underage Drinking.

Uniform reporting of health economics data for taxable lifestyle commodities such as alcohol would include sales as well as consumption mapping, which is a challenging task given a component of choice as well as of intensity. This is challenging, particularly for a country such as India, where states are socioculturally diverse and have independent alcohol sales policies, leading to varying levels of its consumption. There is also a gap in the description of risky behaviors of alcohol use, leading possibly to inadequate data collection and a subsequent reporting bias. Furthermore, there is a r

Outcomes and resource utilization associated with underage drinking at a level I trauma center.

PURPOSE: To examine the association of blood alcohol content (BAC) on hospital-based outcomes and imaging utilization for patients <21 years admitted to a level I trauma center. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of alcohol-involved injuries in patients 13-20 years, admitted to a level I trauma center from 1996 to 2010. An injury was considered alcohol involved if the patient had a BAC > 0. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare mortality, discharge destination (home and skilled nursing facility), intensive care unit admission, and operating room use between patients with and with

Neither a problem nor my problem: Risk factors for underage drinking disengagement among college students.

OBJECTIVE: Underage drinking disengagement (UDD; cognitive restructuring/minimizing agency) measures attitudes about the acceptability and responsibility of drinking. We examined demographic correlates of UDD, as well as the moderating effects of legal drinking status on the association between UDD and drinking. PARTICIPANTS: College student drinkers (n = 893; Mage = 19.48, range = 18-25; White = 74.1%; female = 68.1%) from a multi-site study. METHODS: An online confidential survey included the UDD Scale for College Students and the AUDIT-C. RESULTS: White and multiracial, underage students

Audience Interpretation of Risks in Health Promotion Campaigns About Underage Drinking: Qualitative Interviews With Parents of Adolescents.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Underage alcohol use has been linked to risks of physical, mental, and social harms to young people. Despite the known risks, research shows that parents may choose to supply alcohol to their children on occasions for various reasons. This has prompted several health promotional campaigns aimed at parents to discourage the practice of parental supply of alcohol, but there has been little evidence of how the messages are received by the target audiences, i.e., parents of adolescents. METHODS: Grounded in the existing literature on alcohol-related harms, social dimensions and c

Race/Ethnicity and Contexts: Associations of Racial/Ethnic Discrimination with Underage Youth's Alcohol Use and Drinking Contexts.

BACKGROUND: This study examined how racial/ethnic discrimination may shape alcohol use behaviors, related problems, and contexts of alcohol use among underage youth (<21 years old). Age group differences were also explored. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were obtained from California youth identified as racial and ethnic minoritized youth (n=605; ages 14-20). An adapted version of the Everyday Discrimination Scale was used to assess racial/ethnic discrimination. Demographics were also assessed. Outcomes included drinking status, past-6-month alcohol frequency and quantity, number of types of a

Underage Drinking, Prevalence and Predictors in Arunachal Pradesh, India: Analysis of National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) Data.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that, despite legal restrictions, northeastern states have the highest prevalence of underage drinking, with Arunachal Pradesh leading. Considering the harms associated with underage drinking, assessing its magnitude, and contributing factors is crucial. METHODS: Using the Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) and the state-level National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), data from 7,398 individuals aged 15-20 years were used to assess the district-wise prevalence of underage drinking in Arunachal Pradesh. Further bivariate and multivariate regression analyses w

A longitudinal examination of factors predicting maternal permissiveness toward underage student drinking across the first three years of college.

Parental permissiveness of drinking is a reliable predictor of college drinking, but there is little known about factors that predict such permissiveness. This study seeks to examine factors that predict two potentially different facets of permissiveness: perceived general approval of alcohol use and perceived drinking limits. Additionally, we explored how these facets mediate the relationship between the predictors of permissiveness and subsequent college drinking and related consequences. First-year college students (N = 1,172) from three large U.S. universities participated in a three-year

Drinking firsts at home and with parental knowledge: Racial/ethnic differences in associations with later alcohol outcomes among underage youth.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that early alcohol experiences, such as age of initiation and speed of progression between drinking milestones, vary across racial/ethnic groups. To inform culturally tailored prevention efforts, this longitudinal study examined racial/ethnic differences in the associations of drinking firsts at home and with parental knowledge with alcohol use outcomes among underage youth. METHODS: The study included baseline and five follow-up surveys, collected every 6 months, from California adolescents (ages 12-16 years at baseline). The analytic sample was composed

Effectiveness of a web-based brief alcohol intervention and added value of normative feedback in reducing underage drinking: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current insights indicate that Web-based delivery may enhance the implementation of brief alcohol interventions. Previous research showed that electronically delivered brief alcohol interventions decreased alcohol use in college students and adult problem drinkers. To date, no study has investigated the effectiveness of Web-based brief alcohol interventions in reducing alcohol use in younger populations. OBJECTIVE: The present study tested 2 main hypotheses, that is, whether an online multicomponent brief alcohol intervention was effective in reducing alcohol use among 15- to 20-y

Youth Involvement in Family Drinking and Parental Permission to Sip/Taste Alcohol: A Test of an Early Risk Pathway to Perceived Parental Approval of Underage Alcohol Use.

BACKGROUND: Several alcohol-specific parenting behaviors are associated with adolescent alcohol use. An important next step in the literature is integrating these behaviors into unified risk pathways, which have the potential to inform preventive interventions and public health messaging. Youth involvement in family drinking (i.e., asking children to fetch, pour, and open drinks) reflects parental-approved contact with alcohol, which may present the opportunity for sipping/tasting alcohol with parental permission. In turn, sipping/tasting alcohol with parental permission may increase adolescen

Differentiating the Contribution of Context-Specific Social Influences on Underage Youth's Alcohol Consumption.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We examined associations between sources of social influence (i.e. close friends, other underage people present) within specific settings with the number of drinks underage youth consumed. METHODS: Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey with 422 underage youth in California (14 to 19 years old) who reported past-6-month alcohol use. Participants were asked to think about the last time they drank alcohol in the past 6 months at: restaurants, bars/nightclubs, own home, another's home, outdoors, and fraternities/sororities. Outcomes were the number of who

Understanding Age Verification Practices: A Qualitative Study to Inform Community-Level Interventions.

Underage alcohol use remains a significant public health problem in the United States. Access to alcohol is a key driver of underage drinking, and youth often obtain alcohol by using false identification (fake IDs). While enforcement of minimum drinking age laws is an evidence-based strategy to reduce underage drinking, little systematic examination of age verification practices exists. To address this need, we conducted key informant interviews (N = 8) with staff and owners of alcohol retailers as well as law enforcement officers in a Southeastern U.S. college town between October 2023 and Ap
