Approximately 11 million people living and working in the USA do so without documentation. This group represents a disenfranchised minority with adverse experiences and unique comorbidities that faces significant obstacles to receiving healthcare, including fear of deportation, language barriers, financial barriers and difficulty navigating an inconsistent and fragmented system. Healthcare is therefore often sought once symptoms have become critical, which can lead to more severe disease processes and multiple new diagnoses at presentation even in previously healthy patients. Here we present t

OBJECTIVE: Hemodialysis (HD) care in the United States for undocumented immigrants remains a challenging issue. The objective of this study is to evaluate the timeliness of nephrology and vascular surgery care provided to undocumented immigrants with end-stage renal disease compared with their documented counterparts. Additionally, we evaluate catheter-related complications in undocumented patients on HD.
METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis was performed of patients undergoing first-time arteriovenous access (AVA) creation at a single center from 2012 to 2018 to compare outcomes between d

BACKGROUND: The birth outcomes of undocumented women have not been systematically studied on a large scale. The growing number of undocumented women giving birth in the United States has important implications for clinical care and public health policy. The objective of this study was to describe birth outcomes of undocumented immigrants in Colorado.
METHODS: Retrospective descriptive study of singleton births to 5961 undocumented women using birth certificate data for 1998-1999.
RESULTS: Undocumented mothers were younger, less educated, and more likely to be single. They had higher rates of

Medical schools should amend their admissions policies to welcome applications from qualified undocumented immigrants, often called "Dreamers." The recent creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service removes the key obstacles to securing a license and residency eligibility for such medical school graduates. As a result, to deny application to Dreamers of DACA status represents a kind of unjustified discrimination and violates the basic ethical principle of the equality of human beings. In addition, the medical profession'

The status of undocumented immigrants and current immigration legislative proposals are the subject of heated debate with both political and economic implications often overshadowing the needs of undocumented victims of abuse. This article will focus on the plight of undocumented women and children who are victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse perpetrated by their spouse or parent who is a citizen of the United States (by birth or naturalization). We will review the magnitude of this problem, provide a brief history of current legal protections and the potential for the U-Visa as a

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Twenty-four states and the District of Columbia offer public insurance to pregnant undocumented immigrants who are income eligible for Medicaid. We found that residing in a state with public coverage of pregnant undocumented immigrants was associated with increased prenatal Medicaid coverage among immigrants and was not associated with corresponding reductions in private or other insurance coverage. Offering state public insurance to pregnant undocumented immigrants could increase immigrants' access to insurance coverage and recommended care during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Undocumented immigration is often accompanied by multiple and complex stressors, which over time may increase the risk for chronic pain.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of chronic pain and its association with psychological distress among undocumented Latinx immigrants in the USA.
DESIGN/PARTICIPANTS: We used respondent-driven sampling to collect and analyze data from clinical interviews with 254 undocumented Latinx immigrants, enabling inference to a population of 22,000.
MAIN MEASURES: Chronic pain was assessed using the World Health Organization Composi

Little is known about the conditions of life and the specific health problems of pregnant, undocumented immigrants. This study describes the socio-demographic characteristics and health problems encountered during pregnancy among uninsured, undocumented immigrants in Geneva, Switzerland. A socio-demographic questionnaire was completed by 134 pregnant and undocumented women (mean age 27.8 years) who attended a free antenatal facility between October 2002 and October 2003. The first control of pregnancy was at a median of 10.5 weeks (range 5-33) of amenorrhoea. They were mostly Latino-American (

IMPORTANCE: There are over 2 million undocumented immigrants (UI) in California, where currently, all individuals regardless of immigration status have access to kidney transplant. There is a medical perception that UI face a higher risk of transplant failure due to language barriers and lack of access to immunosuppressive medication and health care when compared with US residents (UR).
OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the kidney transplant outcomes of UI at an academic medical center in California.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted from a single transplant

Although a subjective component of trauma is commonly recognized in diagnosing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there are few studies that specifically address Criterion A2, and none addressing this issue among undocumented immigrants. We assessed 212 arriving undocumented immigrants with diverse trauma histories to investigate concordance between objective and subjective factors of trauma (Criteria A1 and A2) and across different types of trauma and PTSD. Concordance between Criteria A1 and A2 varied, with highest rates found for political violence. Interpersonal violence in general was

IMPORTANCE: In 2023, Colorado implemented the only state-funded marketplace-like US private health insurance program for undocumented immigrants. Community health workers and brokers served as enrollment assisters (EAs) and played a pivotal role in helping clients enroll in insurance plans and navigate the health care system. Understanding the perspectives of EAs is important to inform scalability and implementation as other states consider launching similar state-funded health insurance programs for undocumented immigrants, particularly amid declining federal support for underserved populatio

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Noncitizen, undocumented patients with kidney failure have few treatment options in many states, although Illinois allows for patients to receive a transplant regardless of citizenship status. Little information exists about the experiences of noncitizen patients pursuing kidney transplantation. We sought to understand how access to kidney transplantation affects patients, their family, health care providers, and the health care system.
STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative study with virtually conducted semistructured interviews.

OBJECTIVES: Undocumented immigrants are a highly vulnerable population, frequently exposed to violence and trauma in their country of origin, along the migration journey, and in the host country. This study investigates which factors experienced before, during, and after migration influence the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It also investigates whether PTSD relates to high-risk health behaviors in France.
METHODS: We relied on a survey representative of undocumented immigrants attending facilities providing assistance to vulnerable populations in Paris and Bordeaux (Fr

Although undocumented people are eligible for kidney transplant from a regulatory standpoint, undocumented individuals are often excluded from federal health insurance, leading to difficulty accessing kidney transplant. Menon et al. highlight lower mortality and graft failure rates for presumed undocumented immigrants compared with residents and citizens post-transplant. In this commentary, we emphasize the need for policy reforms to ensure equitable transplantation access for undocumented individuals.

OBJECTIVES: To describe governmental insurance coverage and philanthropic fund options for abortion among undocumented immigrants.
STUDY DESIGN: Internet-based review of publicly available information from state Medicaid and philanthropic abortion fund websites regarding abortion coverage for undocumented immigrants in the United States.
RESULTS: Ten states have abortion coverage for undocumented immigrants. Of these, six state websites offered translations into multiple languages. We identified no immigration status requirements for state or national philanthropic funds.
CONCLUSIONS: Most

Research shows that restrictive immigration policies and practices are associated with poor health, but far less is known about the relationship between inclusive immigration policies and health. Using data from the United States natality files, we estimate associations between state laws granting undocumented immigrants access to driver's licenses and perinatal outcomes among 4,047,067 singleton births to Mexican and Central American immigrant birthing people (2008-2021). Fitting multivariable log binomial and linear models, we find that the implementation of a license law is associated with

BACKGROUND: In most US states, taxpayers are paying, either directly or indirectly, for years of dialysis therapy for undocumented immigrants with end-stage renal disease who lack resources to pay for care themselves. Living donor transplant is a less expensive long-term alternative, but it is unknown what percentage of these patients have potential living donors.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of undocumented immigrant patients receiving dialysis at our outpatient center between March and May 2010. Forty-five patients completed the survey. The survey focused on the availabili

IMPORTANCE: Undocumented immigrants represent a disproportionate share of uninsured individuals in the US, owing to federal restrictions that limit access to affordable health care coverage. Emergency Medicaid (EM) and other state-sponsored programs offer mechanisms for receiving necessary medical care, but their scope and provisions are poorly understood by patients, clinicians, and policymakers alike.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the national policy landscape of EM and other state programs designed to provide health care coverage for undocumented immigrants.

UNLABELLED: Undocumented immigrants in the United States are at risk for upper extremity trauma due to occupational exposure, and decreased access to healthcare can worsen outcomes. The purpose of this study was to compare documented versus undocumented patients in a large cohort of patients in New York City's most diverse neighborhood in order to characterize upper extremity trauma in this population.
METHODS: The Elmhurst Hospital trauma database was examined for patients admitted with upper extremity trauma from April 2016 to December 2019. Charts were examined for demographic information,
