Behavioural Responses of Unio tumidus Freshwater Mussels to Pesticide Contamination.

A pesticide is a chemical substance used for the disposal of pests, such as insects, weeds, invertebrates, or rodents. Pesticides interfere with the normal metabolism of the target species; however, some of them may inadvertently affect organisms other than those targeted. Increased quantities of pesticides in water disturb various ecological processes and may increase the mortality rate of various native species of flora and fauna. One of the groups of organisms that are at the greatest risk from the adverse effects of pesticides is the bivalves. This study was designed to assess the behaviou

Common and Particular Biochemical Effects of Gadolinium and Yttrium in the Bivalve Mollusc Unio tumidus.

Environmental concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) are increasing rapidly due to their widespread application in modern technologies. Because the biological effects of REEs are expected to be like those of essential metals, the goal of this study was to verify the impact of selected REEs on the Zn-related biochemical characteristics in the bivalve mollusc Unio tumidus. The mussels were treated with environmentally relevant concentrations of gadolinium (GdCl3, 30 nM) and yttrium (YCl3, 30 nM) for 14 days. The accumulation of Gd, Y, Zn (Zn-t) in the tissue, the level of metallothioneins

Biological activity of pentachlorophenol on the digestive gland cells of the freshwater mussel Unio tumidus.

Many chlorinated phenols and their derivatives are used extensively as insecticides, fungicides and herbicides by industrial and agricultural users throughout the world. Among these substances, pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a broad-spectrum biocide, which is still used as a wood preservative. In this paper, the digestive gland cells were used to assess the effect of PCP in the range of concentrations 3.75-75 microM (0.01-0.2 ppm) on oxidative DNA damage, fluidity changes and peroxidation activity in the plasma membrane. The toxic property of PCP on DNA strand breakage was studied using the comet

Effect of cadmium and zinc salts on energy metabolism and survival of Unio tumidus Philipsson.

Energy metabolism of aquatic invertebrates is one of the most important targets of environmental pollutants, in particular, heavy metals. In this study, we determined changes in survival, oxygen uptake and hepato-pancreas glycogen level of the bivalve mollusk Unio tumidus Philipsson following chronic exposure of Cd and Zn salts (chlorides and sulfates). The concentrations of Cd salts were equal to 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1 mg/l and concentrations of Zn salts were equal to 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 mg/l (maximal contamination level for Cd is 0.005 mg/l and for Zn is 0.01 mg/l). Survival was registered daily whe

[Insulin-like substance containing cells of the intestinal epithelium of the mollusk Unio pictorum].

Insulin-like immunoreactivity can be localized in the cells of the mid-gut of Unio pictorum Lam. The cells containing the substance immunoreactive to mammalian anti-insulin serum, can be stained with paraldehyde-fuchsin or alcian blue and give positive PAS reaction. Intramuscular glucose administration produces degranulation of the cytoplasm in these cells: the quantity of cells stainable with paraldehyde-fuchsin significantly decreased 24 hours after glucose injection.

Reductive stress and cytotoxicity in the swollen river mussel (Unio tumidus) exposed to microplastics and salinomycin.

Multistress effects lead to unpredicted consequences in aquatic ecotoxicology and are extremely concerning. The goal of this study was to trace how specific effects of the antibiotic salinomycin (Sal) and microplastics (MP) on the bivalve molluscs are manifested in the combined environmentally relevant exposures. Unio tumidus specimens were treated with Sal (0.6 μg L-1), MP (1 mg L-1, 2 μm size), and both at 18 °C (Mix) and 25 °C (MixT) for 14 days. The redox stress and apoptotic enzyme responses and the balance of Zn/Cu in the digestive gland were analyzed. The shared signs of stress included

Cadmium availability to freshwater mussel (Unio tumidus) in the presence of organic matter and UV radiation.

The influence of ultraviolet radiation (UV) on cadmium availability to freshwater mussel (Unio tumidus) in the presence of organic matter was investigated. Water solutions containing 1000, 500, and 250 microg x L(-1) of cadmium and 28.8 mg x L(-1) of total organic carbon (TOC) were exposed to ecologically relevant biologically effective UV-A and UV-B irradiances of 1.73 x 10(-6) W x cm(-2) and 1.50 x 10(-5) W x cm(-2) respectively for 12 h. The availability of cadmium was measured directly as Cd concentration in gills, mantle, digestive gland and foot, and indirectly as its impact on the conte

Alleviation of specific responses in the combined exposure of freshwater mussel Unio tumidus to psychoactive substances and microplastics.

The environmentally relevant aquatic pollution is associated with the mixtures of xenobiotics, each in the low, picomolar to micromolar concentrations. Among these substances, the combinations of pharmaceuticals and microplastics (MP) have become an increasingly serious threat. The objective of this study was to track the specific and multi-stress responses of swollen river mussels (Unio tumidus) to the psychoactive substances caffeine (Caff) and chlorpromazine (Cpz) under combined exposure with MP. The MP (1 mg·L-1, size 35-50 μm), Caff (20 µg·L-1), Cpz (12 ng·L-1) or their mixture (Mix) were

Parasites and their impact on thick-shelled river mussels Unio crassus from two populations in Luxembourg.

The thick-shelled river mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788 is a species native to many European habitats, with declining populations. The impact of parasite communities on health status of this species is poorly understood. In this study, parasites of 30 U. crassus specimens from the Our and Sauer Rivers in Luxembourg were identified morphologically and, in some cases, using molecular genetic methods. The findings were correlated to selected parameters (total length, visceral weight, shell lesions, gonadal stage). The 2 populations did not differ in shell length, visceral weight, number of m

First description of freshwater mite Unionicola sauerensis sp. nov. infesting thick-shelled river mussel Unio crassus.

A sample of 30 thick-shelled river mussels Unio crassus Philipsson (Unionida: Unionidae) was collected from the River Sauer in Luxembourg to acquire data on parasitic infestations of the mussels. Among other parasites, different development stages of freshwater mites were collected from the gills and the mantle of the mussels and were documented with bright-field, stereo, and confocal laser scanning microscopy and microscopic X-ray computed tomography. The retrieved data allowed a morphological description of larvae and female adults of the mites and assigning them to the genus Unionicola Hald

Environmental concentrations of Roundup in combination with chlorpromazine or heating causes biochemical disturbances in the bivalve mollusc Unio tumidus.

Bivalve molluscs represent the most recognized bioindicators of freshwater pollution. However, their ability to indicate specific xenobiotics in complex exposures is unclear. In this study, we aimed to track the particular effects of the pesticide Roundup (Rnd) and the antipsychotic drug chlorpromazine (Cpz) on the mussel Unio tumidus at the simpler environmentally relevant models. We treated the mussels by Rnd (17 μg L-1), Cpz (18 μg L-1), the mixture of Rnd and Cpz at 18 °C (RndCpz), and Rnd at 25 °C (RndT) and examined their digestive glands after 14 days of exposure. The effects of zinc nanooxide on cellular stress responses of the freshwater mussels Unio tumidus are modulated by elevated temperature and organic pollutants.

Nanoparticle toxicity is a growing concern in freshwater habitats. However, understanding of the nanoparticle effects on aquatic organisms is impeded by the lack of the studies of the nanoparticles effects in the environmentally relevant context of multiple stress exposures. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (n-ZnO) are widely used metal-based nanoparticles in electronics and personal care products that accumulate in aquatic environments from multiple non-point sources. In this study, we evaluated the effects of n-ZnO in a model organism, a mussel Unio tumidus, and the potential modulation of these eff

Trace element bioaccumulation in the freshwater mussel Unio elongatulus after long-term transplantation: implications for biomonitoring and nature-based remediation.

Freshwater mussels are widely used as bioindicators of aquatic contamination due to their high filtration capacity and ability to accumulate trace elements. However, their potential role in contaminant sequestration and environmental remediation remains poorly explored under natural exposure conditions. In this study, we investigated trace element bioaccumulation dynamics in the freshwater mussel Unio elongatulus (Pfeiffer, 1825) through a long-term active biomonitoring experiment. Approximately 2,000 individuals collected from an uncontaminated reference site in Lake Maggiore (Italy) were tra

Accumulation of metal(loid)s in the digestive gland of the mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788: A reliable detection of historical freshwater contamination.

The possible influence of historical contamination of water/sediments on the metal(loid) bioaccumulation in the digestive gland of mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788, from two differently contaminated sites at the Mrežnica River was studied in three seasons. The first data for this species on total/cytosolic concentrations of 27 (non)essential elements were obtained by HR ICP-MS. Higher bioaccumulation was observed at the historically contaminated site, with several nonessential elements (Bi, Cs, Pb, Sb, Tl, U) found in 5-6 times higher concentrations compared to the reference site. Integrated biomarker response-based investigation of oxidative stress in Hemolymph, gills, and digestive glands of freshwater mussels (Unio delicatus) exposed to Etoxazole.

Pesticides extensively used in agriculture pose risks to non-target aquatic organisms. This study assessed the acute and sublethal effects of etoxazole (ETX), an isoxazoline-derived acaricide, on the freshwater mussel Unio delicatus. The 96 h LC₅₀ was calculated as 463.97 mg/L (316.29-662.47 mg/L, 95 % CI). Mussels were exposed to sublethal ETX concentrations for 96 h and 7 days. Total hemocyte counts (THCs), total antioxidant status (TAS), and total oxidant status (TOS) were measured in hemolymph. In this study, elevated total hemocyte counts (THCs) indicated activation of cellular immune res

Genome sequence analysis of baculoviruses from the noctuid moths Eudryas unio and Autographa gamma indicates that they are isolates of Betabaculovirus xecnigri, a species of slow-killing granuloviruses.

Complete genome sequences were determined for three uncharacterized betabaculoviruses (Baculoviridae: Lefavirales) from noctuid moth species. These viruses included Eudryas unio granulovirus 1112 (EuunGV-1112), Eudryas unio granulovirus 1229 (EuunGV-1229), and Autographa gamma granulovirus Darmstadt (AugaGV-Darmstadt). Analysis of the features and open reading frame (ORF) contents of the genome sequences indicated that all three viruses were closely related to Helicoverpa armigera granulovirus (HearGV; Betabaculovirus helarmigerae) and Xestia c-nigrum granulovirus (XecnGV; Betabaculovirus xecn

Comparative toxicity of single and combined mixtures of selected pollutants among larval stages of the native freshwater mussels (Unio elongatulus) and the invasive zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha).

This study evaluated the impact of biocides (tributyltin, chlorthalonil and Irgarol 1051) and of pollutants (copper, inorganic and methyl mercury and 4-nonylphenol) occurring in Ebro River (NE Spain) on early developmental stages of native Spanish freshwater and invasive zebra mussels. Toxicity tests were conducted with embryos and glochidia of zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) and the naiad species Unio elongatulus, respectively. Toxicity was quantified in terms of median effective concentration (EC50) impairing embryogenesis and glochidia viability in single and combined mixture exposures.

Oxidative stress and immune signatures of carbamazepine in freshwater mussels.

The persistence of pharmaceutical compounds in aquatic environments and their limited removal by conventional treatment processes necessitate evaluating organism-level effects of long-term exposure using biomarkers. Who wins in the weaning process? Juvenile feeding morphology of two freshwater mussel species.

The global decline of freshwater mussels can be partially attributed to their complex life cycle. Their survival from glochidium to adulthood is like a long obstacle race, with juvenile mortality as a key critical point. Mass mortality shortly after entering into a juvenile state has been reported in both wild and captive populations, thus weakening the effective bivalve population. A similar phenomenon occurs during metamorphosis in natural and hatchery populations of juvenile marine bivalves. Based on a morphological analysis using scanning electron microscopy of newly formed juveniles of th
