Comparative morphology and mitogenomics of freshwater mussels Koreosolenaia, Parvasolenaia, and Sinosolenaia (Bivalvia: Unionidae: Gonideinae).

BACKGROUND: Amidst the escalating loss of global biodiversity, freshwater mussels (family Unionidae) have become one of the most imperiled animal groups. Acquiring more biological and phylogenetic information on understudied taxa constitutes a pivotal aspect of conservation biology. Consequently, a comprehensive examination was conducted on Koreosolenaia, Parvasolenaia, and Sinosolenaia from China encompassing morphology, anatomy, distribution, and molecular systematics to provide theoretical support for future species endangerment assessments and biodiversity conservation. RESULTS: The shell

Acute and chronic toxicity of technical-grade pesticides to glochidia and juveniles of freshwater mussels (Unionidae).

Chemical contaminants are among many potential factors involved in the decline of freshwater mussel populations in North America, and the effects of pesticides on early life stages of unionid mussels are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the toxicity of technical-grade current-use pesticides to glochidia and juvenile life stages of freshwater mussels. We performed acute toxicity tests with glochidia (five species) and juveniles (two species) exposed to a suite of current-use pesticides including herbicides (atrazine and pendimethalin), insecticides (fipronil and per

Taxonomic reassessment of Scabies (Bivalvia: Unionidae) species in China based on multilocus and mitogenomic phylogenetic analyses.

Effective species conservation necessitates the ability to accurately differentiate among species, a challenge compounded by taxonomic uncertainties in freshwater mussels due to substantial intraspecific variation and pronounced phenotypic plasticity in shell morphology. The taxonomic status and species validity of Scabies longata and S. chinensis, two species endemic in China, have been under continuous debate since establishment. The lack of essential molecular data required for a comprehensive systematic study has resulted in the unresolved taxonomic status of these two species. This study

Cytotaxonomy of unionid freshwater mussels (Unionoida, Unionidae) from northeastern Thailand with description of a new species.

Morphological and chromosomal characteristics of a number of unionid freshwater mussels were studied from northeastern Thailand. Karyotypes of eight species from seven genera (Chamberlainia, Ensidens, Hyriopsis, Physunio, Pseudodon, Scabies and Trapezoideus) were examined. Six species possess 2n = 38 karyotypes, whereas Scabiescrispata and an unidentified Scabies sp. lack three small chromosome pairs, giving a diploid number of 32. Moreover, the karyotypes of the unidentified Scabies differ from Scabiescrispata as it exhibits a telocentric chromosome pair (6m + 7sm + 2st + 1t). Most of the con

First description of freshwater mite Unionicola sauerensis sp. nov. infesting thick-shelled river mussel Unio crassus.

A sample of 30 thick-shelled river mussels Unio crassus Philipsson (Unionida: Unionidae) was collected from the River Sauer in Luxembourg to acquire data on parasitic infestations of the mussels. Among other parasites, different development stages of freshwater mites were collected from the gills and the mantle of the mussels and were documented with bright-field, stereo, and confocal laser scanning microscopy and microscopic X-ray computed tomography. The retrieved data allowed a morphological description of larvae and female adults of the mites and assigning them to the genus Unionicola Hald

Evaluation of survivorship and annulus validation in calcein-stained freshwater unionid mussels.

Unionid mussels deposit growth rings (annuli) within the shell, which can be used to estimate age and growth. Thin-sectioning is a common technique for counting annuli, wherein a cross-section of a shell valve is taken and evaluated by multiple readers. Correctly identifying annuli can be challenging because ambiguous annuli can bias growth estimates. Staining with calcein, a fluorescent chemical, is a technique that has been used with marine and freshwater species to improve accuracy of growth estimates. This method chelates calcium, causing a permanent mark that fluoresces under ultraviolet

Impact of habitat engineering by invasive Corbicula clams on native European unionid mussels.

Biological invasions cause biodiversity erosion on a global scale. Invasive species spreading beyond their natural range compete with native fauna for food and space, push native species to suboptimal habitats, impairing their behaviour and thus limiting their occurrence. Freshwater ecosystems are especially vulnerable to biological invasions and their ecological and economic impacts. The invasive Asian clams (Corbicula spp.), due to their opportunistic life style, can occur at densities of thousands ind. m-2. They act as ecosystem engineers transforming bottom substrata through accumulation o

Pathology and infectious agents of unionid mussels: A primer for pathologists in disease surveillance and investigation of mortality events.

Freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled groups of organisms in the world, and more than 30 species have gone extinct in the last century. While habitat alteration and destruction have contributed to the declines, the role of disease in mortality events is unclear. In an effort to involve veterinary pathologists in disease surveillance and the investigation of freshwater mussel mortality events, we provide information on the conservation status of unionids, sample collection and processing techniques, and unique and confounding anatomical and physiological differences. We review the pu

Reproductive aspects of freshwater unionid mussel sperm: Seasonal dynamics, male-to male variability, and cell quantification.

Freshwater unionid mussel diversity is decreasing because of species extirpation or extinction. While little can be done to recover lost species, there is an opportunity to develop techniques to save other species. This can be facilitated through gene banking and assisted reproduction. Unfortunately, limited information is available on mussel reproduction, especially relating to sperm quality. Objectives, therefore, were to quantify seasonal changes in sperm concentration and morphology for two unionid mussels, Ligumia subrostrata and Lampsilisstraminea, measure intraspecific heterogeneity for

Histopathologic survey of free-living populations of 2 species of freshwater mussels in Indiana.

Freshwater mussels are one of the most endangered groups of animals in Indiana, with nearly half of the native species either extirpated or listed as "state endangered" or of "special concern." Nationally, numerous freshwater mussel species are considered threatened. Freshwater mussel diseases are not well understood and few published accounts of freshwater mussel diseases with detailed histological descriptions exist. Mass mortality events within mussel populations are increasingly recognized, often with undetermined etiology. Our objective was to determine baseline histopathology in free-liv

When two evils are not equal: Differential biofouling of unionid bivalves by two invasive dreissenid species.

Byssate bivalves are ecosystem engineers with world-wide impact on aquatic communities through habitat forming and biofouling of hard-shelled organisms. In fresh waters, they are represented by invasive Ponto-Caspian dreissenid mussels spreading throughout Europe and North America. They negatively affect globally threatened unionid mussels by fouling, which deteriorates their condition and survival. The appearance of quagga mussels (D. rostriformis bugensis, QM) in areas occupied by zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha, ZM) usually has led to the replacement of ZM by QM. We combined long-term f

Pearl mussel (Hyriopsis cumingii)-derived exosome-like nanovesicles promote osteogenesis and alleviate ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice.

Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease that has become a serious public health concern. Food-derived exosome-like nanovesicles have recently emerged as natural functional ingredients with diverse biological activities. In this study, mantle-derived exosome-like nanovesicles from pearl mussel (PMEs) were isolated and systematically characterized. PMEs exhibited a typical cup-shaped morphology with a major size peak at approximately 116.3 nm and were enriched in bioactive lipids, osteogenesis-related proteins, and mineral elements. PMEs were efficiently internalized by osteoblast

Acute effects of road salts and associated cyanide compounds on the early life stages of the unionid mussel Villosa iris.

The toxicity of cyanide to the early life stages of freshwater mussels (order Unionida) has remained unexplored. Cyanide is known to be acutely toxic to other aquatic organisms. Cyanide-containing compounds, such as sodium ferrocyanide and ferric ferrocyanide, are commonly added to road deicing salts as anticaking agents. The purpose of the present study was to assess the acute toxicity of three cyanide compounds (sodium cyanide, sodium ferrocyanide, and ferric ferrocyanide), two road salts containing cyanide anticaking agents (Morton and Cargill brands), a brine deicing solution (Liquidow bra

Forecasting influenza hemagglutinin mutations through the lens of anomaly detection.

The influenza virus hemagglutinin is an important part of the virus attachment to the host cells. The hemagglutinin proteins are one of the genetic regions of the virus with a high potential for mutations. Due to the importance of predicting mutations in producing effective and low-cost vaccines, solutions that attempt to approach this problem have recently gained significant attention. A historical record of mutations has been used to train predictive models in such solutions. However, the imbalance between mutations and preserved proteins is a big challenge for the development of such models

Who wins in the weaning process? Juvenile feeding morphology of two freshwater mussel species.

The global decline of freshwater mussels can be partially attributed to their complex life cycle. Their survival from glochidium to adulthood is like a long obstacle race, with juvenile mortality as a key critical point. Mass mortality shortly after entering into a juvenile state has been reported in both wild and captive populations, thus weakening the effective bivalve population. A similar phenomenon occurs during metamorphosis in natural and hatchery populations of juvenile marine bivalves. Based on a morphological analysis using scanning electron microscopy of newly formed juveniles of th
