Description and utilization of the United States department of defense serum repository: a review of published studies, 1985-2012.

Specimens in the United States Department of Defense (DoD) Serum Repository have accumulated in frozen storage since 1985 when the DoD began universal screening for human immunodeficiency virus. Use of the stored serum for health research has been carefully controlled, but the resulting publications have never been systematically identified or described. The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center (AFHSC) information systems and open (online) sites were used as data sources. Through 2012, the repository contained 54,542,658 serum specimens, of which 228,610 (0.42%) have been accessed for any p

Notes from the field: Department of Defense response to a multistate outbreak of fungal meningitis--United States, October 2012.

On October 1, 2012, the Department of Defense (DoD) learned of a multistate outbreak of fungal meningitis in persons who received injections of methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) from a single compounding pharmacy. Ten patients with fungal meningitis after epidural steroid injection (ESI) were initially identified in Tennessee and North Carolina. No military treatment facilities had received MPA from this pharmacy. However, clinics receiving implicated MPA lots were located throughout the United States, and active duty military service members and other DoD health-care beneficiaries could have b

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the circulation of influenza and other seasonal respiratory viruses in the United States. All data were obtained from the US Department of Defense Global Respiratory Pathogen Surveillance Program over five consecutive respiratory seasons from 2016-2017 through to 2020-2021. A total of 62,476 specimens were tested for seasonal respiratory viruses. The circulating patterns of seasonal respiratory viruses have been greatly altered during the pandemic. The 2019-2020 influenza season terminated earlier compared to th

Test-Retest Reliability of Concussion Baseline Assessments in United States Service Academy Cadets: A Report from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)-Department of Defense (DoD) CARE Consortium.

OBJECTIVE: In response to advancing clinical practice guidelines regarding concussion management, service members, like athletes, complete a baseline assessment prior to participating in high-risk activities. While several studies have established test stability in athletes, no investigation to date has examined the stability of baseline assessment scores in military cadets. The objective of this study was to assess the test-retest reliability of a baseline concussion test battery in cadets at U.S. Service Academies. METHODS: All cadets participating in the Concussion Assessment, Research, an

Pharmacological and Somatic Treatments for First-Episode Psychosis and Schizophrenia: Synopsis of the US Department of Veterans Affairs and US Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: The Departments of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Defense (DOD) provide care each year for approximately 75,000 people with first-episode psychoses or schizophrenia, but neither has formal, evidence-based guidance for treating these conditions. Recognition of this gap, together with guidance from Congress, led the Departments to develop clinical practice guidelines for first-episode psychosis and schizophrenia. This synopsis summarizes the psychopharmacological and other somatic treatment recommendations. STUDY DESIGN: An interdisciplinary panel of VA and DOD mental health and primary

Effect of Intensive Blood Pressure Lowering on Cardiovascular Outcomes: A Systematic Review Prepared for the 2020 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs/U.S. Department of Defense Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical trials suggest that treating patients with hypertension to lower blood pressure (BP) targets improves cardiovascular outcomes. PURPOSE: To summarize the effects of intensive (or targeted) systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) lowering with pharmacologic treatment on cardiovascular outcomes and harms in adults with hypertension. DATA SOURCES: Multiple databases, including MEDLINE and EMBASE, were searched for relevant systematic reviews (SRs) published in English from 15 December 2013 through 25 March 2019, with updated targeted searches through 8 January 2020.

Unique Features of the US Department of Defense Multidisciplinary Concussion Clinics.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) actively address care needs for a subset of service members (SMs) who experience prolonged symptoms and adverse sequelae interfering with their usual level of function after sustaining mild traumatic brain injury. The development of multidisciplinary concussion clinics and implementation of several reinforcing policies within the DoD and the VA address this unique patient population. A network known as the National Intrepid Center of Excellence and Intrepid Spirit Centers and the VA, primarily support these patients
